Butch Hobson learned some of that toughness while playing quaterback for Bear Bryant at the Univ. of Alabama. I'm guessing some of that pounding (and playing on artificial turf) also contributed to his body wearing out before its time...

When I was in college back in the early 90's, a friend of mine from Birmingham and I were driving around near his house one day. We passed a baseball field that had a gas station well beyond the left field fence. Between the gas station and the field was a parking lot then a grassy area and then the left field fence. My buddy said, "See that parking lot? Butch Hobson was famous for being the only guy who could hit a ball all the way up to that parking lot." I said, "Wow, that WOULD be quite a shot...I guess that's why Butch made it to the majors." Then my buddy said, "You're right, everybody did think that was a monster shot...until Bo Jackson came along and hit one on top of the gas station..."

Nothing too dramatic to say about post-season roster. Looks fine to me.

Oh, and it looks like Terry Francona is done with the Sox. Or, they with him. Probably mutual.

Bruce, I can't remember where I saw this -- LoHud, I think -- but your predictions about Chris Dickerson (on) and Valdes (off) are right.

I'm okay with Posada as DH. He'll bat from the left side almost all the time, and Jorgie has an .814 OPS against righties. Montero can pinch hit if Leyland goes to Coke or Schlereth.
