It would be impossible for the '98 Yanks to play the '86 Mets. Which teams would Cone and Straw play for?

That would make for a fun Oldtimers day though. A subway series Old timers day.

Get Little Stein on the phone!

[4] I've thought the Red Sox would make a play for CC even before Lackey went down.

Very silly argument. The only question is, 1998 Yankees or 1927 Yankees? Factoring in different eras, training methods, sports medicine, travel, etc.

two great teams. for my money, the discipline of the best team in history is going to knock out the tempermental dead-end kids when they are on the ropes. killer instinct of the dynasty yanks was unbeatable.

and worst case scenario, george brings mike scott out of retirement and the mets fold like superman on laundry day.

Reasonably speaking, both had excellent starting pitchers, great bullpens, and deep benches. The '98 Yanks offense >> the '86 Mets offense, however.

.263/.339/.401 for the '86 Mets
.288/.364/.460 for our boys

No contest, even taking the different offensive eras into account. The lowest OBP for any Yanks with over 300 PAs was Posada, at .350. Meanwhile, the Mets played Rafael Santana and his .295 OBP in 137 games.

I'd like to see William give this his full "Color by Numbers" treatment. I'm sure there's more nuggets to be found!
