James Dickey, the novelist and poet who wrote the book, plays the sheriff. I’ve never read any of his novels, but his poetry is great (e.g. “Drowning With Others”).

Now I need to watch this again.

For the record, as a kid that movie scared me as well… The first time I went whitewater rafting, I could swear I heard the sound of a faint banjo playing off in the distance. lol And of course in the rafting/canoe gift shops they sell t-shirts that say: “Paddle faster…I hear banjo music”

I can’t believe Boorman laid all those tracks in the woods. The camerawork is superb.

I still love how if you look closely you’ll notice Ed “Al Bundy” O’Neill as a state trooper at the end of the movie.

…and this movie still scares the shit out of me and has completely colored my perceptions of everything south of the Mason-Dixon.
