3) Yeah, Huston actually wanted to reproduce the book, as opposed to buy the story and put some contract stars into it. In both cases (The Thin Man & The Maltese Falcon), they also wound up with perfect casting. No one could play urbane, witty and charming like William Powell.

2) That's interesting. Especially since it took three tries to get "The Maltese Falcon" right. But damn, when Huston nailed it, he nailed it forever.

The novels were written to be screenplays IMHO. However, I always loved this line from Nick. "Can I have something to cut the phlegm.

Another favorite. I actually tried my hand at adapting the screenplay one time. A lot of exposition tied in with the witty dialogue. It was a bear to tease them apart. After a few pages I realized the alchemy of the picture was not reproducible, by me anyway. Fun to try though.
