[8] After that blast, I am pretty sure the headline in one of the papers read "Babe Hassey".

I remember Ron Hassey hitting a bit homer late in the season and then them losing the first two of three games against the Jays. Then, when they were out of it, Niekro winning his 300th on a Sunday afternoon.

[4] I recently found about 6 hours of clips from the 1986 and 1987 season. My teenage sister at the time had a crush on Dave Righetti, and would tape the innings he pitched. Here infatuation then is our gain now. Converting the files from VHS and uploading to youtube is time consuming, but I hope to get most of it posted.

[4][5][6] The 1985 season was my favorite because the team had a great offense and Ron Guidry put forth his last big season. Also, the excitement over the Mets and Yankees both being contenders made the playground a lot of fun. 1986 was a good year too, but the Yankees weren't out of the race by mid-August, and the Mets had stolen the spotlight. The 1987 team seemed to be in great shape to win the division, but then injuries really took a toll, including the great-Hammy caper involving Henderson.

85 was a tremendous comeback down the stretch though, Al. If we sweep that last series in Toronto there's a playoff.

Plus the Billy and Whitson fight was a laugh riot!

4) I remember '85 being worse. And the Yanks were hot for a while there in '87, too.

Great stuff, William.
Another example of why blogs rule. Loved the WNYW interviews from camp.

I remember the '86 season pretty well. Went to about a dozen games that summer, home from college, earning my beer money as a Long Island landscaper. Watched a lot of games on weeknights with my dad.
Frustrating that we finished in 2nd that year.
But the Mets and Giants made it an excellent year around here.

...I can't hold it back I'm looking for the line..

I've had this argument before, is that not one of the top two rap songs ever? If I was a pitcher warming up to start my game at home, why wouldn't this be your warm-up song? It would certainly be mine.

The beat, the length of the song, how Rakim just comes back with this verse after the 3rd stanza of "make'em clap to this":

Go get a girl and get soft and warm
Don't get excited, you've been invited to a quiet storm
But now it's out of hand 'cause you told me you hate me
And then you ask what have I done lately
