I remember one letter to the editor (can’t recall if it was the Times or Daily News) during the 1980s where a Red Sox fan wrote in to say he felt sympathy for the Yankees for being so bad. Worst thing I read, baseball-wise. I don’t mind being yelled at, accused of buying championships or whatever. But for a Boston fan to hold my hand and say “there, there, things will get better,” there’s not a worse insult. Better to be hated than pitied.
