I’m not a football fan, really. But I think the fundamental question isn’t whether he is good or not so good, or a legitimate backup or not, etcetera. I think the real question is “does he bring enough value to offset the circus he’ll be bringing to town”. The Jets seem unstable and dysfunctional enough. Do they really need a ready-made quarterback controversy?

Look, they gave up very little to get a dynamic, legit backup.
Unless you don’t personally like the guy there’s no reason to complain.
If Sanchez can’t handle the pressure of playing in front of Tebow, what pressure can he handle?

[22] Go back and look at how they won some of those games that brought them to their illustrious 8-8 record and 3 way tie for first. Very fluky happenings – e.g. Marion Barber running out of bounds.

I do think he’s a pretty fine runner – he did very well in designed running plays especially. I think Hawk is right in [23] – its just not worth it, given what else they need to address.

[13] The problem is, he’s not a “legitimate backup” – but a very loud segment of the population will clamor for him as if he was, and in any case he will get an undue amount of attention. It’s really the worst of both worlds in the sense that he’s not a good QB but Sanchez will feel pressure as though Peyton Manning is standing there.

[19] I agree that he could be a good Swiss Army Knife if they can mold him like that. Like a TE, RB, occasional wildcat QB type thing. Again though, is it worth it? I don’t think so. He’s not some kind of ultimate weapon, he’s nifty at best. Not to mention the Jets have some outstanding needs they have to address.

[22] Sanchez HAS NOT regressed. Maybe he hasn’t improved as much as he “should” have, but every year he’s gotten better. And last year, the deck was stacked against him to a degree.

If he’s such a bad QB, how was it that he was able to take his team to the second round of the NFL playoffs, given how important a QB is in the NFL? He’s not good at what pro QB’s traditionally do–drop back and throw–but he is a terrific runner, incredibly tough, and contrary to popular belief, can throw a ball deep. The guy can run a wildcat offense better than most.

One of the big misconceptions of Tebow is that he doesn’t have a good arm. That’s not true. He has a good arm, but he has bad mechanics. Mechanics can be taught. Arm strength cannot be.

I just don’t see how Mark Sanchez has earned some birthright to the Jets’ QB position. He hasn’t progressed in four years; he’s gone backward. If Sanchez wants to keep the position, how about showing an ability to lead an offense?

[17] That’s the thing – he’s not a good backup quarterback if he’s not good at what the position requires. Honestly, I think the guy could succeed as a rb/te/wingback type player.

[16] I don’t think anybody should see him as anything more than a backup qb at this point.
To expect him to get them past the Pats or other elite AFC teams is unrealistic.

[13] The bottom line is that *no one* outside of his fan base really seems to think this guy can succeed long term as a QB in the NFL. Yes, he won a bunch of games last year dramatically, but he’s an awful pocket passer and that will catch up to him.

unless you’re completely intolerant of Tebow’s faith, and the attention it draws I don’t see how you can be strongly against the move. It certainly creates a quarterback controversy, and puts more pressure on Sanchez to live up to his salary, but isn’t this a make or break year for him with the Jets? The presence of any legitimate backup would create a controversy, and put more heat on Sanchez.
The way I look at it, the Jets can do much worse than having Tebow as a backup.
Anyway, I’m a Giants fan, and I think Tebow is a good guy, and a good story, so what do I know?

I was always frustrated that the Jets seemed to never let Brad Smith throw much. He could’ve been even more dangerous. They must have REALLY not trusted him to avoid INTs.
