And yeah, I agree with Alex, this is probably the best adaptation of Elmore Leonard for the big screen. However, JUSTIFIED does a brilliant job of maintaining the tone & spirit of Leonard on a weekly basis on TV. They’ve nailed that edge where something can be funny one second and life-threateningly scary the next.

I think Soderberg is a pretty serious talent. I don’t love everything he does, but he’s a really canny director and he’s made some really good films. Fincher is amazingly talented and probably has the best composed shots in the business, but there’s something distancing and cold about his work. It’s very obsessive and detached, which I think worked really well for ZODIAC. As for GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, Fincher’s direction is aces, but the material is pretty trashy. Also, since the writer is played by 007, you never really feel like he’s in danger.

[2] SL&V and Traffic were really over-rated. Havn’t seen The Limey, that the one with Terrence Stamp? (Btw, you know the Terence Stamp Japan story right?)

You’d have to pay me to read or watch “..Dragon Tatoo”..life too short for dreary Scandinavian dramas, I used my quota up with all the Bergman films in college!

Finchner’s version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is fantastic. But read the book first, yo! (Sorry, my sis made off to Cali with my copy).

Well..most likely in the minority on this one but Soderbergh is just not a very good filmmaker. I liked this one but probably more for the dialogue and the leads chemistry than anything S.S. did.

Always felt guys like Soderbergh and Finchner gave up early on with the choices they made, obscuring or destroying their early talent..but that’s Hellywood, right?
