"He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure a whole lot of others will too." -Bob Dylan

As Pete Townshend once said "They may be your icons, but they were my fucking friends."

That was great! Thanks Mr. Schulian, for sharing. I recall seeing the post-Robertson band at Nassau CC when I was in high school. I got up close and the thing I came away with most was the fun that Levon seemed to be having all through the set.

Holy smokes. That was a lovely tribute. I, too have been a big fan of The Band and I have actively followed Levon's joyous career. His smile is unforgettable, his generosity as a musician always in evidence. I once saw him hand over his drums to an aspiring rocker to play as a guest. Levon was singing and laughing.

One of the great highlights was seeing him, his band and some local musicians at a dinky bar in Chester, NY to honor the memory of a local blues musician who died of hard living that year. Jimmy Vivino was the MC. Levon was having the best time and his enthusiasm was contagious. I will always remember him that way.

Wonderful. What a guy. Sitting in -- both having someone sit in with you or being asked to do so -- is a real treat, and has provided me with many of my favorite musical memories.

Wow. Just -- wow.

Thank you to John S. and to Alex for sharing this. I've been a fan of Levon and of The Band since I was a mere yout' (I grew up listening to their vinyl records, and distinctly remember seeing THE LAST WALTZ in the theatre as a kid and being blown away), and this story just adds to the awesomeness.

The Band, even just by its name, always sounded like a group of generous musicians whose sole purpose for existing was playing together. Levon was indeed the soul of that outfit, and this story shows what a generous player he was. Great story. I love hearing these kinds of things about artists whose talents I greatly appreciate.
