[9] Damon might be single minded in his pursuit to get 3000 hits, but we'll never know becuase nobody will employ him.

If Rose played today, he'd have run into unemployable territory well before 4000 hits.

Pete was single-minded in his pursuit of Cobb. Jeter's never given any indication that a record would motivate him. Notice that Charlie Hustle also gave Alex some props in that piece.

Anybody catch Pete Rose's Jeter predictions via Joe Pos on Sports on Earth?

http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/39644156/

I agree with Rose that Jeter won't catch him. Notice how he says Jeter won't do it because a) he wants to be a Yankee, and b) because the Yanks care about winning too much to play him at 1B or LF when he's no good anymore.

I guess Rose is just admitting that he only got the record because he was allowed to play LF and 1B when he wasn't any good anymore for teams that didn't try to win. Thanks Pete, that pretty much sums it up! And who was that manager that didn't care about winning, again?

I mean look at what Rose did for the Phils in 1983. He was 42 and the worst player in the NL. Among qualified regulars, he had the lowest WAR (-1.7), 2nd lowest wRC+ (66) and third lowest wOBA (.273).

Somehow the World Series bound Phils played that guy for 151 games. Somehow, he was allowed to stick around for another 1000+ ABs in the big leagues. Of course his phony record is untouchable.

Can you imagine Jeter wanting to keep playing for another 3 years after the being the very worst player in the entire league?
