6) old George wouldn't have followed the fiscal path his sons are now taking. But this move seems to be more about the organization's image, than finances.
The Yankees may be thinking if they adjust their payroll to be more in line with the other big market teams, they can have better leverage in making trades, and acquisitions.
Everybody wants to fleece the Yankees, and will always try, to, but not being the fattest spender, and by such a large margin may help them do better business around the league.
It's probably also a matter of principle. The luxury tax is horseshit.

Can we get back to Pavement. Someone showed interest in him? If he pitched for the Lake Monsters, Burlington VT's Oakland affiliate, I would not go to the game.

As for the team ownership must field due to the contracts, let's all go see "Stand Up Guys."

[5] This has been talked about for some time by both William and Mike, and other writers have picked up on it and trumpeted it in other places, but the Yanks seem hell-bent on following this course of action. They almost have to have an ulterior motive that would rock the team in a big way if we all knew. That or the people running the team really are insane/incompetent...

...but then, maybe they just decided to bite the bullet and take a few years to rid themselves of their bad contracts, then start from scratch with a solid (and more importantly, fresh) core. I guess that would be acceptable if you're not presently at or well past the average life span or you're impervious to mortality.

Yeah, some of the accounting is over my head, but despite my limited intelligence I find it very interesting that the Yankees' efforts to avoid the luxury tax may be ill-advised from a "dollars and sense" perspective. Hats off to William and the other writers of have gone waist deep into the CBA to crunch the numbers for the rest of us dummies.
