It's the state of race relations, then and now, that someone like Feller can be called "racist" because he had a differing opinion. I haven't seen it in my limited exposure to Feller, but I cannot speak for others. His actions don't speak to someone who is racist or even bigoted.

Listening to his interviews over the years, I gained something of an appreciation for him, and many times can see where he's coming from. Granted there were times where he came across as a "grumpy old man," but given the life he led up to that point, I can say that he earned that right.

I saw him pitch at the HoF Classic last year. I also saw him give public thanks to a Veteran who was being honored during the game.

And for those interested in names, Indian scout (heh, heh) Cy Slapnika signed Feller.

Read the NYT obit. Interesting tidbit about how Feller did not think Robinson would make it as a major leaguer. As only life could produce the irony, it turned out Feller harbored no racial animus and the two were inducted into the HoF together in their first year of eligibility.

Stings. Like the feeling you get when a ball hits the bat on a chilly opening day. Marvelous recollections. Personal. Engaging. Too few I meet live on that higher plateau which can inform me of what the human form has the capacity to achieve.

Thanks for the wake up read.
