[13] Generally, I’d agree (since they sure don’t have to worry about him hitting his inning limits this year), but it sounds like they were just being careful in a specific situation, which I can’t really gainsay, not being there on the field today. From over at LoHud:

Hughes tried to plead his case to pitch the seventh, but the Yankees thought the heat at Rogers Centre had been too taxing and didn’t want Hughes back out there. It felt boiling in this building, with no breeze and the sun baking the turf. Hughes said he would have sworn it was over 100 degrees.

Yes, his best game, and I think he could have easily come out for the seventh. He had low pitch counts in both the fifth and sixth and seemed to be having little trouble. I’d like to see the Yankees push him a little further instead of this constant babying.

Speaking of today’s game, Hughes didn’t seem great, but that had to easily be his best (and most promising) start of the year, right?

Watched the WWC game live, now watching the replay of NYY vs Tor.

Tough, tough loss for the US, they could have, should have won by 2-3 goals; they threw this one away and they’re not going to forget it for a long, loooooooong time.

But congratulations to the Japanese players, they never quit and I don’t think it’s even possible to overstate how much this win must mean for them and the nation of Japan …

I was disappointed, but as rbj said, it’s hard to feel bad about Japan winning.

That was horrible, just terrible. They really should have been playing aggressively even with the lead.

Ugh.
