If you look back at 1999, there were not as many catastrophic injuries that were possibly related to conditioning (Ewing broke his wrist on a jam attempt that year after falling to the floor, but the Knicks made it to the Finals where they were finally outmatched by the Spurs.) You would have to establish a clear pattern over several seasons before and after to conclude whether the schedule has anything to do with it. I think a good proportion of players and coaches were effected more by the lack of off-season prep and preseason play because of the lockout.

Quick answer: make sure there are no more lockouts or strikes, and if there are then keep your butt in good shape throughout. Because we all know Stern and Co. will not easily give up however many millions of dollars of revenue by simply shortening the season; especially not with the overhead from taxpayer-funded arenas and max player contracts they’ve incurred.
