Didn’t Bernie sort-of give his blessings for Beltran to succeed him in CF? You know Joe would have worked it out to have his cake and eat it too. I think Bernie was okay with not starting in the outfield all the time anymore, but whether or not that’s true, he really wanted to be in the lineup and mash. 2004 was a mini-Renaissance for him what with a booming lineup and all.

in all seriousness, I’d take a shot for 2 years. I can live with a Soriano, Gardner, Beltran outfield with Ichiro plugged in there on days you DH Beltran or Soriano.

I’m not even thinking about Wells, let’s call it like it is: we’re gonna bitch and moan about him all winter and he’ll be DFA’d by Memorial Day. It’s not even worth discussing.

Cliff’s a smart guy, and a helluva Yankees analyst. The baseball blogosphere is missing his contributions.

I remember being lukewarm to the Beltran idea at the time because I was such a Bernie-guy, even as his CF skills diminished. Beltran was a Bernie-fan, too. Torre could have worked it out. Can you imagine that 2005-06-07 lineup with Beltran? Coulda woulda been something to behold.

[2] You are so right on that one.I can imagine McCann catching for a couple of seasons, and then moving to 1st when Tex finally retires (officially..it only seems like he’s been retired for years already). By then, the phenoms in single A might actually be ready.
