There was a column in the Post about CC’s scrap and the writer referenced the famous Copacabana brawl in 1957 that marked the end of Billy’s playing days with the Yanks.

Here’s an interesting note to that story. Apparently the Yankees were sticking up for their boy Sammy Davis Jr., who was performing and being heckled (with racial slurs) by a bowling team of deli owners from the Bronx.

Barry Manilow’s song, Copacabana, which we all well know, is about “a showgirl named Lola” who was the catalyst for a more deadly fight at the Copacabana. Now, this may be a coincidence, but Lola Falana (a real showgirl) was a protege, and occasional girlfriend, of Sammy’s. He helped her get started and get a recording deal with Frank Sinatra’s label, before she went on to TV, movies, Golden Globe awards and more.

I wonder if Barry was singing about the real Lola and I wonder if she was there the night the our Yankees raised their fists to stick up for our Sammy. She would have only been 15, but she was already working at 14.

Bryan on the 15 day DL doesn’t open a new 40 man roster spot. I suspect he’ll go on the 60 day, so it’s see you in February. Cappy comes back and there’s another new arm from SWB. That’s my best guess.
