Confirmed. Baseball Reference tells me that Brett was in a race with Rickey Henderson in 1990. Rickey ended the year on a seven-game hitting streak, but he wasn’t able to catch Brett, largely because Brett sat out games 157, 158, and 160, took two at bats in 161, then sat out 162. Brett ended the year at .329, four points ahead of Rickey.

Even so, Rickey won the MVP that year. About two months after the season ended, I saw Brett at an L.A. Kings game. I wanted to ask him if he was proud of backing his way into the batting title, but instead I just asked him to sign my ticket stub. I’ve got it out in the garage someplace.

Paul made a good point about how they’re pitching Judge. I could understand it if they were in a playoff race, but all these guys are competitors. Wouldn’t you think you’d want this chance, that you’d embrace it? You get to stand on the mound at Yankee Stadium and face a guy who’s having one of the greatest seasons in major league history. You’ve got the chance to create a story that you can tell your grandchildren one day.

And instead you throw four sliders outside of the zone. Stupid.
