[2] Your Ron Hassey comment has me thinking. Off the top of my head, here's my list of all-time favorite obscure Yankees.

C -- Butch Wynegar
When I was kid, the name just struck me as funny.

1B -- Bob Watson
Scored the 1,000,000th run in baseball history.

2B -- Steve Sax
Remember when Pat Kelly was called up and the moved Sax to third, a position he had never played? My friend and I actually sent Sax a telegram from California thanking him for sacrificing for the team.

3B -- Mike Pagliarulo
Loved this kid. But remember when Billy Martin forced him to bat right-handed in a game? Poor Pags.

SS -- Randy Velarde
I actually despised Velarde. Hated him. Oh, but he could hit Randy Johnson. I remember when he came up against Johnson in Game 5 in 1995. The announcers were gushing over how dominant Johnson was, specifically against Yankee hitters. As each batter came up, their career stats against Johnson were displayed on the screen, and it was all awful. They didn't put anything up for Velarde, so I screamed at the screen -- "Why don't you put HIS stats up?" Because I knew they were good. He promptly singled home the go ahead run. (Yeah, I know what happened next.)

LF -- Deion Sanders
It remains beyond ridiculous that Deion played for the Yankees.

CF -- Omar Moreno
Or did he play left? The stolen base was changing the game, and the Yankees were trying to keep up.

RF -- Melky Cabrera
Did he ever play right field? Who knows. But the Melk man has to be on the list.

SP -- Tim Leary
He was the best Yankee pitcher on the worst Yankee teams of my lifetime. After losing 19 games in 1990 (and being held out of his last start for fear of losing 20), he was the opening day pitcher in 1991, and I still remember the opening of a little poem I wrote on the occasion, modelled after Edgar Allan Poe:
"Once upon an April dreary, labored last year's loser Leary."

Cano over Willie. That’s an agonizing call.

And Posada over Ron Hassey?

No, I love this list, Hank. And it’s got me thinking...
