I’m A Twit

I’m not sure why, but I’ve given in to the trend and opened a twitter account. I have no idea what will become of it, but I hope to keep it regularly updated with random thoughts, random stats, links to my non-Banter articles, and perhaps the occasional bit of news (though surely someone in comments will beat me to the last). I have a few posts up there already on Sean Black, Alex Rodriguez, and Amani Toomer. If you’re so inclined, follow along.

They really need to come up with something better to call Twitter users.

I think they use "twiterer" or something. I think Conan has this one covered (see the videos in the lower right).

And thanks for the shoutout, Shaun. Agreed on the Giants weak history of receivers, but that didn't fit in 140 characters. Twitter: the death of nuance.

My Twitter is the link in my name here. You can see my semi-witty (okay, not really) observations.

twitter has actually done wonders for some of my web projects.

I just started following you, C. I'm @forgottenbkmrks.

added you too, Mattpat11.

I'm not sure what to think of that RAB post you tweeted, Cliff. OT1H, I read folks I respect who said letting Joba have so much off-time between starts might hurt him. OTOH, I don't see anyway around doing that to keep his innings down.

Thanks, especially for reminding me about your great Forgotten Bookmarks site.

[5] nice.

[6] Supposedly they're doing it to protect the pen, and they'll skip Joba next time through as Thursday's off-day will allow them to slot in Gaudin somewhere other than right next to Mitre.

That said, is there a more favorable place for Gaudin to get a start than in Safeco against that miserable M's offense?

I don't get the allure of Twitter, but what do I know.

The NYP is reporting that Joba is "likely" to start on Sunday.

10 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 1:35 pm

[9] The allure of twitter is that I "tweeted" that Joba news an hour ago. Also it's another distraction/time waster for folks stuck behind a computer all day.

11 Rich   ~  Aug 14, 2009 1:51 pm

[10] Touche, but my problem with it is that if I regularly checked the tweets of every twitter user that holds any interest for me, I wouldn't have time to read the more in depth content that I want to read on the net. It's an example of line drawing. If there was a way to aggregate content of various twitter accounts, so that I could quickly scan them in one place, I might reconsider.

12 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:05 pm

[11] Indeed, if you sign up for your own twitter account you can "follow" everyone you want to follow and all of their posts appear in one place on your home page, most recent on top. You needn't actually post any tweets yourself.

"PeteAbe reports that Girardi says Alex Rodriguez (elbow) is "50/50" to start Friday's game:"

ARod needed time off before he got hit. For cripes sake, give him another day off. Matsui is hot. Last night's lineup with Po instead of Jose will do fine.

While I appreciate that CC is a horse, is there any concern for the milage on his arm ? (170 +/- IP already). Can 'saving' him for the PS be a bad idea? Yeah, it's good to rest the BP, but we have tons of kids who can eat a few innings here and there. We only have one CC.

14 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:13 pm

[11] Indeed there is! I use twitterfox - its an addon for Firefox that puts a little box in the bottom right corner of the browser window, and lets you know when there are new tweets to look at.

There's a lot of such add-ons out there.

15 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:17 pm

[13] OYF, there's a big difference in worrying about the mileage on the 23-year-old's arm, versus the mileage on the 29-year-old's arm who's got more IP the last 2 seasons than the 23-year-old has in his career.

How desperate are the BoSox for an "upgrade" at SS?
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4399324

17 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:20 pm

[15] Agreed. That was 105 easy pitches for CC last night. No reason not to let him go that long.

[13] I can agree with that on Rodriguez. Rest him tonight so he's extra fresh to give support to Mitre on Saturday.

18 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:20 pm

[15] Though I just read something that suggested CC's poor postseasons the last two years are due to him being overworked in the regular season . . .

So maybe you're on to something, OYF. My hope is that, if the Yanks clinch early enough, they can give CC et al some rest here and there in September.

19 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:22 pm

[16] tweeted that one an hour ago as well! (don't worry, I'll get lazy soon)

I don't think it's an upgrade they're looking for as much as trying to plug what's turned into a huge hole. Gonzalez won't do it, though.

20 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:23 pm

[18] I suspect he's conditioned for 250 IP now, though, as opposed to two years ago when that was a new level for him.

21 ms october   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:26 pm

[13] i'd like to see a bit of easing up on cc's left arm. he's 6th in mlb in pitcher abuse points (and was 2nd last year when he was damn near criminally abused).

he needs to stay fresh.
problem is the rotation now includes 1 shitbum, 1 presumed shitbum, and 1 young/often inefficient guy with an innings cap

22 PJ   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:30 pm

[5] LOL!

Do twits tweet or twitter?

Clearly they don't golf...

: )

23 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:30 pm

[21] who is the presumed shitbum?

24 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:32 pm

[22] I wanted the LaVern Baker version, but happily settled for the ridiculousness of that golfing rendition.

25 ms october   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:35 pm

[23] gaudin (he's surely an upgrade over mitre, but i'm not that confident of him getting "quality starts" - he doesn't even seemed stretched out right now, he went 7 innings on 7/26 and has seen very limited action since -3 appearances of short outings - hopefully he will be acceptable though)

26 PJ   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:36 pm

[24] Dig those crazy golf cars!

Unfortunately, I remember those three wheeled versions with the steering bar all too well, Cliff.

That was back when, "You got good wood on that one," was a compliment to how solidly you hit your tee shot with a wooden club. Now it means you hit the tree in the woods...

: )

27 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:38 pm

[14]

Wow .... twitterfox rocks! Thanks for the heads-up!

28 ms october   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:38 pm

[26] pj i guess will's good luck for the yankees outweighs the curse of flash.
though the start of every series now has me wondering just when oh when coney will return to the booth?!?

29 PJ   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:45 pm

[26] Agreed! A Will sighting here is even more effective than when a Banterer attends a game (sorry Diane). We'll have to duct tape him to his computer during the post season!

Coney is missed. Whereabouts unknown. Perhaps a post to Kim Jones or an email to YES might be in order...

I like late west coast games, especially on Saturday. We don't have to worry about those nasty FOX blackouts and actually get to watch it!

: )

30 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:49 pm

[25] Gaudin isn't necessarily replacing Mitre. The two are mutually exclusive to a point. Joba and off-days will replace one of them with regularity. The rotation is really: CC, AJ, Andy, and two of Joba/Mitre/Gaudin, so the three spots you were complaining about are actually only two.

31 ms october   ~  Aug 14, 2009 2:56 pm

[30] yeah that's true. and with the joba map already having detours it seems less likely that all 3 would pitch in a given week (i think). but the presence of all 3 as starters does place some of a burden on the other 3 to give more length.

32 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 14, 2009 3:12 pm

[27] You're very welcome! I can't stand the twitter "homepage" interface. It was only when I found twitterfox that I actually started using my twitter account regularly.

And I'm "at" shaunp99 if anyone cares to follow me.

[31] As soon as rosters expand on September 1, that burden is probably going to be lessened. Melancon and Albaladejo and whoever gets demoted when Marte returns can certainly help, and guys like Edwar and Claggett can at least pitch in garbage time if nothing else.

Its really the next two and a half weeks that might be a burden.

In the "boy do I feel old NOW category", Magic Johnson is now 50!
