Phelps and Nuno in the same series? It may be just what the Rays need.

2 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:15 pm

Le sigh.

3 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:16 pm

Tee it up, Phelps. Tee it up.

4 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:34 pm

What is the frustration level with Cashman around here?

5 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:36 pm

I thought his moves in the offseason, post-Cano, were about as good as they could have been, given the overall circumstances, but I blame him for the circumstances.

On the one hand, you pay for a long time for a run like we had, on the other hand, that's way too long ago for dispensation, no?

6 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:51 pm

Can I go back to hating David Phelps now?

7 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 6:56 pm

[6] Yes.

8 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:06 pm

Damn, where would we be without Gritner?

Also, [7] thanks, that's a great relief.

9 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:17 pm

So no one's biting on Cashman and his responsibility for this slop, I take it.

10 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:19 pm

Don't give up the tie, David

11 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:25 pm

[9] I mean, I guess Cashman is responsible for the personnel, yes, always.

Personally, I'm happy to talk about personnel moves and general managing in the winter. But now we have actual baseball, so the front office stuff doesn't interest me much.

12 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:26 pm

[10] He's wearing a tie? I didn't notice that.
Isn't that kind of eccentric?

13 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:34 pm

[12] Heh. Maybe we can tie his shoes together so he can't go out and pitch.

14 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:39 pm

Thanks Tampa

15 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:45 pm

[11] It's all I can think about when I see Roberts at second base, the lack of exciting young players on the field (obvious occupational hazard for this team, but the draft picks, I mean, wow), and the AAA pitchers littered across the rotation. The latter isn't really his fault, with the three major injuries on the staff, but as the season creeps along and games feel tossed into the L heap with crappy SP, I think about it. Of course, I like to look to assign blame, so ymmv.

16 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:54 pm

Huh, I thought he did incredibly well with the pitching. The team has eight ML-capable starters, of whom three are on the DL. I think the starting pitching is third best in the AL, after Seattle and Oakland. Whose starters do you think are better?

17 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 7:58 pm

[15] Need to run out the dog, but we're counting Nuno and Whitley as major-league capable, and Phelps as more than hanging on by his fingernails to that status?

I have zero belief in the two former and little in the latter, but I also tend to skip their recent games because I've gotten busy over here. Aren't they kind of terrible?

18 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:05 pm

No, none of them is terrible (although I hate Phelps). They aren't good -- that's why I said 'capable'. But those are the 6th, 7th, and 8th starters, so that seems pretty good to me.

Look, the team is over .500, and they can't score runs. The pitchers are keeping them in the picture.

19 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:05 pm

[17] They've had good games, more inconsistent than bad.

Phew!

20 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:07 pm

Whew.

21 Ara Just Fair   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:19 pm

[17] Phelps is obnoxious. He's a mix of Hughes and Kennedy all rolled into one.

22 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:20 pm

Wow, Phelps came within an out of a "quality start"

23 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:30 pm

Oy

24 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:33 pm

Phew!

25 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:39 pm

steal, brian!

30 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:48 pm

31 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:50 pm

nancy's brother ruins the no-no.

i hate the shit sox and the fens.

32 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:50 pm

[30] bummer. was excited for that. Though, it reinforces that we should have performed better against that crap team.

33 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:54 pm

[27] thanks, seamus!

i have to say...it truly was a perfect wedding. i've played hundreds of weddings and this was the BEST wedding i've ever been to in my life! and my grandma - who watches over me - made sure the rain stayed away. it was such an incredible day/night!!! : )

34 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:58 pm

35 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:58 pm

36 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:59 pm

37 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 8:59 pm

damn it. alas.

38 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:00 pm

[32] That's so great man! Congratulations!!! I'm super excited for you and your wife and your future together!

39 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:03 pm

stoopid sacrifice bunts.

40 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:03 pm

Dammit!

41 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:04 pm

[37] thanks man!!! : )

42 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:05 pm

fuckin a. stop with the bs. shut them down and score 17 runs damnit!

43 rbj   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:05 pm

Gotta get Sparky to the vet for his dental cleaning in the am. Night all.

44 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:07 pm

ok, that's step one. Now go get those runs.

45 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:07 pm

[41] this!

46 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:08 pm

[42] g'night rbj!

47 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:14 pm

ok that's a start ellsbury.

48 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:14 pm

steal 2nd.

or, my dad just said: "we really need a home run."

ok, that!

49 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:17 pm

Or, strike out swinging! That also works!

50 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:20 pm

c'mon buys. Get those guys across.

51 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:21 pm

it does work. but not very well.

awful. just awful.

52 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:22 pm

oh boo.

53 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:22 pm

Carlos Beltran must get a lot of hits in games I don't watch, because if he didn't he would be batting .096.

54 seamus   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:26 pm

[52] i feel the same.

55 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:34 pm

I don't think I can do this with these guys. A seven year old doesn't make that ridiculous mistake on the base paths. They're not very good and they're stupid. Terrible combo. Ellsbury not scoring there is unforgivable and I don't think I can forgive.

56 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:38 pm

Wow. That I did not expect.

57 monkeypants   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:39 pm

Nice AB by Roberts rewarded, with interest.

58 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:39 pm

I'll be damned.

59 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:40 pm

Uh.
We better score again, though, because we're kind of out of pitchers.

60 monkeypants   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:42 pm

[58] Ichiro makes his long-awaited pitching debut?

61 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 9:48 pm

Wow, Kelley made me eat those words. Mowed through the tough part of the Rays' order.

62 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:02 pm

Sigh.

63 RIYank   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:02 pm

This one goes to eleven.

64 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:15 pm

[63] i know that reference. i get things.

65 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:26 pm

Why wouldn't you go to Thornton here, who had such a good inning the other night? You've committed all these resources - don't you go with the guy who's an actual major league pitcher?

66 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:33 pm

we've handed out 8 walks and 2 HBPs.

67 thelarmis   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:34 pm

and there it is...

FUCK.

68 jjmerlock   ~  Jun 30, 2014 10:34 pm

And that was classic fucking Rays. I *hate* playing this damn team. They fucking Ray'd us.
