USA vs. Puerto Rico: Two Teams Enter, One Team Leaves

Tonight, the USA will either advance to the World Baseball Classic semi-finals or be eliminated. The game is on MLB Network at 7pm, or you can follow it via my liveblog over at SI.com.  Or both!

[1] I just booked tickets to see my sister in Dallas over spring break. I am hoping to catch a game the day after I arrive. Of course they're playing K.C. I'll holler at Sir Syd for ya'.

Sidney Ponson .... AND Kyle Farnsworth .... on the SAME TEAM?

Is that allowed?

[5] Um, where have you been the last couple years?! I suppose your question may really be is it allowed for Farns and Ponson to be on the same team not the Yankees!!

Off topic but I gotta say I am amazed that A Rod has come through again. He may not be the best baseball player but he's the best something. With this photo spread he's saying "Every time think you've gotten away, I pull you back in!"

I look forward to people spinning this one.

Jeter with the pasta groundball..ouch..

10 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Mar 17, 2009 8:36 pm

yup, key play in the game thus far. With Jimmy Rollins as DH. Double ouch.

[7] I'm fairly indifferent to the "ARod saga," especially with the NY Post doing the reporting. Anyway, as I said @ WW

"Unless a player does something stupid (Joba’s drunk driving charge, Pascual’s drug suspension), or does something worth reporting (Munson’s plane crash, Lyman Bostock murdered), or even something positive (Mo Vaughn’s charity work), I really don’t pay too much attention" to what these people consider "news"

Watching Feliciano throw ball after ball... This is shaping up to be a decent game. Looking forward to watching Darvish pitch tonight.

So, where was the cutoff on that Rios throw that bounced off Victorino?

Yes .... it was a failed attempt at humor. :-)

[14] Johnson's managing has been pretty poor all tournament. While his bench is thin because of injuries, he did have Ianetta available to hit for McCann. Also, the ridiculously stupid decision to play Jeter in the field and Rollins at DH cost the U.S two runs, which could eventually be the tournament.

It's really a shame that the United States remains as the sole team to not take this tournament seriously. If the U.S. is not going to actually play the tournament straight up to win, then maybe they should give the slot to another country.

Bases loaded 1 out for the US team, Youk coming to bat... Should be fun, Cabrera in to clean up Romero's mess

Who says David Wright isn't clutch!

18 Raf   ~  Mar 17, 2009 10:04 pm

Team Puerto Rico snatched defeat from the jaws of victory... Try again in 4 years, boys

19 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Mar 17, 2009 10:10 pm

Good at-bats by the US in that inning. Puerto Rico gave it to 'em, but the USA let them, and that's important.

Jeter's off the hook.

The Japan - Korea game has a lot of potential to be fun. The crowds are really hot.

21 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Mar 17, 2009 10:37 pm

great ending! Cliff, you live blogging Japan-Korea?? wish i could play hooky from work and head to the bar to watch the game..

22 a.O   ~  Mar 17, 2009 10:54 pm

Will somebody please tell the Puerto Ricans that THERE ARE NO WHISTLES IN BASEBALL!! Oh well, I guess they're going home now anyway. USA!!! USA!!!

23 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Mar 17, 2009 11:05 pm

No, I'm only commissioned to liveblog the USA games, and not even the seeding games at that. I'll be back in action over there for the semi-finals, though I might blog all three semi-final and final games.

[22] I think those ref's whistles were left over from Mardi Gras...

I am enjoying Darvish pitch, too.

;)

[7] I read this one comment on on LoHud where the commenter was blaming the photographer. I was dying. I really can't believe people and the excuses they make for this guy. Amazing!!!

We have a nice big pink elephant manning 3rd base, let's act like he's not there. Oh crap, we can't!!!!

26 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Mar 17, 2009 11:33 pm

anyone watching? "play-by-play" online says Darvish tagged for 3 in the 1st, but infield hit, error and rinky-dink single were it..I really really can't wait to see Darvish pitching in Yankee Stadium in a few years!

27 SteveAmerica   ~  Mar 18, 2009 12:25 am

Jeter made one decent defensive play to his left early on, but botched the other two. Had to explain to my wife why they were terrible plays even though Jeter didn't get an error. That led to me explaining to her why errors are possibly the most meaningless stat in baseball. So ya know, that was fun.

28 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Mar 18, 2009 2:41 am

Whoa, Samurai Japan went down to the Koreans..going to be a lot of 'splainin to do over here if they can't make it past Cuba to the semis tomorrow night..

Can't believe so many people make a ruckus about horendously boring college basketball when there is such a great baseball tournament going on..I mean, Morehead State beat Alabama State, stop the presses! final score 58-43...43 points total?!

29 The Hawk   ~  Mar 18, 2009 9:04 am

[28] Cuba/Ricky Ricardo - nice one!
