"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Splish Splash

It’s rainin’ in New York.

Will they get this one in?  And if they do, can A. Pettitte and Junior Weaver keep the ball in the park?

Perish the thought.

I'd love to be on the good side of watching a Weaver getting roughed up for a change.

2 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 5:40 pm

It's "Wrath of God" type thunder storms here in TN since this morning I'm afraid and heading your way...

3 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 6:55 pm

Sooooooo, how's it looking game wise? Raining? Tarp off?

4 Dimelo   ~  May 1, 2009 7:01 pm

Tarp is off

5 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 1, 2009 7:19 pm

Abreu with the revenge steal..is no one online for this one? Pretty quiet here..Rays-Sox on tv here this morning so it's the Angels radio team via web for me..

6 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 7:21 pm

Yay, baseball!

7 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 7:24 pm

I'm here. Just don't have a lot to say so far.

[6][7] Following the game a bit lonely without the Banter peanut gallery..

9 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 7:29 pm

Well at least Tex moved the runners over. Apparently those $100+ million contracts don't buy you what they used to.

10 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 7:30 pm

Tex has at least been hitting 'em hard.

11 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 7:31 pm

And to think some people were ready to give up on Robbie.

Deliberate to Swish?? Charge the mound!!

20 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 7:40 pm

[19] Not deliberate. Jered is looking like Jeff tonight. And not the WS-winning Jeff.

21 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 7:40 pm

Wow @ jumping out into the lead against the Angels following a splendid Pettitte pickoff! That's one way to stop a running game!

: )

22 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 7:41 pm

throw strikes Andy. Throw strikes.

23 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 7:41 pm

Yeah, Weaver had no command at all in that frame.

Not that I'm upset about that or anything...

24 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 7:41 pm

another way to stop a running game is to not walk the leadoff man

25 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 7:42 pm

[20] jered weaver has so many of the same douchy traits that jeff has/had - hopefully he will continue to pitch like the jeff weaver i loathe

that was a rays or angel like play from pena there.

LOL. I thought "Melky" looked kinda pale and skinny.

43 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:00 pm

I just hope the Yankees don't lose their Swish.

44 cult of basebaal   ~  May 1, 2009 8:00 pm

dammit, swish out of the game ... just one more reason to add to the weaver hate.

45 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 8:00 pm

Never been to Nashville, would like to. Been to Memphis, it was pretty cool - they have a real nice minor league ballpark right downtown. The downtown was eerily empty though.

Ah shit, Gardner in for Swisher. Shit.

46 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 8:01 pm

In case one hadn't noticed, Swisher is out.

47 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 1, 2009 8:05 pm

[46] Diagnosis?? Damn Weaver..I am so freakin tired of people hitting the Yanks, intentionally or not, with no response..bring back Krazy Kyle!

48 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 8:06 pm

Nice to come home to a good looking' score. I had in friend in Colorado who was from Murfreesboro TN. He was aptly nicknamed Tennessee. Man, did he have a thick accent.

49 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 8:07 pm

[47] I've actually been feeling like Yankee pitchers sure have been hitting a lot of guys this year. Most years I'm also annoyed with all the plunked Yanks.

Boy Andy, lets get on with it... Good gamesmanship from the Angles though - shock

50 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:07 pm

Phew!

51 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 8:07 pm

[47] All they said was that it was his elbow. The YES announcers don't seem overly concerned. They predicted when he was hit that he would have to leave the game, once the elbow started swelling. Presumably he's icing it now.

52 Chyll Will   ~  May 1, 2009 8:08 pm

[47] There's always Veras... just wild enough to seem like an accident >;)

53 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:12 pm

We've lived all over the SE U.S., from southern Indiana to Miami, and pernts between...

We like it here sort of, being temperate, great food, and equally great golf.

Not much here though, especially if you don't like Country Music, even though all types of tunes come from here these days, including that new Francesa jingle, which reminds me of the "Chimpokoman" song from South Park...

: )

54 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:13 pm

[52] Oooh. And if Veras gets suspended, well that would be a feature, not a bug.

55 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:14 pm

[53] What's the scoop on Knoxville? I'm toying with applying for a job there, the major drawbacks are finding a new dojo & trying to sell my house in Toledo.

56 Chyll Will   ~  May 1, 2009 8:17 pm

What's with the "Boston Sucks" chant? Anyone?

57 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 1, 2009 8:19 pm

[53] Chinpokomon was hysterical..I think Parker from South Park is married to a Japanese woman, hence all the obscure Japanese references in many episodes.

Not a country music fan, though have a soft spot for Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings..

58 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:19 pm

[55] College town, UT devotion rivals just about anywhere else in the U.S. because that's all they have there really. Foothills of the Appalachians, really beautiful all year round. Absolutely stunning during the fall. Folks come from all over to look at the leaves changing. Great place for families.

59 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 8:20 pm

Good grief. Even the catcher is stealing bases?

60 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:22 pm

[58] Thanks.

Jorge stole a base the other day. Maybe this is the year of the base stealing catcher?

61 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:22 pm

[57] I like the old country stuff (70's and earlier to Hank Sr. and Patsy Cline). After Hee Haw was canceled, all my friends became out of work, and I really don't like the "new country" which replaced it...

62 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 8:24 pm

Welcom back, Brett. holy crap- swing the fuckin' bat.

63 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 8:26 pm

I actually like much of the new country: Tim McGraw, Dirks Bently, Keith Urban, Josh Turner. Allison Krauss and George Strait are amazing. Don't like Kenny Chesney or Big n Rich or the Redneck Woman any of that crap.

64 Chyll Will   ~  May 1, 2009 8:27 pm

They're all swinging pretty weakly, if at all...

65 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:29 pm

[60] Oh I forgot, sales tax is high, but there are no state and local income taxes... Moderate expenses for living and TN roads are among the best in the nation in terms of condition and repairs.

66 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 8:29 pm

Jered Weaver is suddenly looking like the 3.3 ERA pitcher that he is.

67 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 8:29 pm

[66] Good thing they mugged him early.

68 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:31 pm

[65] And don't forget dry counties and some decent BBQ in TN. And you're right, the Smoky Mountains are absolutely gorgeous.

70 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:33 pm

[65] Thanks. I don't mind a sales tax, taxing consumption is better IMO than taxing working.

71 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:35 pm

[69] Good pernt Raf. Even the county where Lynchburg is, where they distill Jack Daniel's is still dry...

76 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 8:38 pm

Jeff Weaver was called up yesterday, BTW. They're carrying 13 pitchers, to keep Torre from abusing anyone. Eyechart was put on the 60-day DL to make room for him.

77 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 8:38 pm

OK, let's get some more runs here. It's a Weaver on the mound, fer cryin' out loud.

[68] Finest and funniest show I've seen in a while: Spamalot!

80 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 8:43 pm

[78] I love that show.

It closed on Broadway, but I think it's on tour in varoius places.

81 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 8:45 pm

[78] When my wife and I took the trip up there and attended that near Cabrera no hit fiasco at OYS in '06, we went to Spamalot, too...

I sat directly behind the poor sap in the audience they took on stage...

Too fun, that!

LOL

Additionally, that's one of my all time favorite movies.

Did anyone see the Pete Abe compare Pedroia's first 60 games to Gardner's. Their numbers were very similar, but I have a hard time believing that Dusty looked as pathetic as Lil' G. Oh, and Tex will finally become a true Yankee tonight. : )

137 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 9:24 pm

Why do the Yankees keep giving up these huge innings. Joe really might need to shorten up his hook for the starters

138 Raf   ~  May 1, 2009 9:25 pm

Melancon can't pitch an entire inning?

139 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:26 pm

[137] Uh, Melancon gave up a first-pitch triple. The problem wasn't that he left Pettitte in too long.

140 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:27 pm

Go to the mound. Slap Veras. And take him out.

141 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:28 pm

[136] dusty looked really bad at the beginning of that year.
oyf can probably say more than me since he watched more red sox games than i did.
but one thing dusty didn't do that gardner seems to me to do is look for the walk and hence watch strike 3 a lot. dusty swung the bat more aggressively.

142 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:28 pm

[136] Dusty was also 22. Gardner is 25.

143 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:29 pm

I hate Veras.

144 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 1, 2009 9:30 pm

[137] One might easily argue leaving Andy in to load the bases wasn't smart.

145 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 9:31 pm

[136] Pedroia did look bad. The hitting coach took him aside and told him he had to change his swing if he wanted to stick in the big leagues.

146 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:31 pm

Veras is like a railroad spike to the eye.

147 Diane Firstman   ~  May 1, 2009 9:31 pm

Jen and I reporting from section 202, where the biggest concern all night has been shouting "pirates suck" to a guy in a Pittsburgh hat

148 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 9:32 pm

Dusty had very good numbers in Ml. Garder needs to lose the uppercut swing and be more aggressive.

149 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:32 pm

I would like to seen some aggressiveness. Any schmo can go up there and watch stirke after strike and swing like a kid who would get cut from JV. I hate Pedroia, but he does not look clueless in the box. The age thing makes it even more aggravating.

150 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 9:32 pm

[144] Yeah, I agree. Melancon was just called up. He looked very nervous to me, coming in with the bases loaded and the game on the line.

151 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:34 pm

damint i'm really start to not like veras

152 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:34 pm

clap-clap-clap. Atta boy, Veras. At least you didn't walk him.

153 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:36 pm

[144] [150] But Melancon and Veras have been *much* worse than Pettitte. Bringing them in earlier wouldn't have been better, surely.

Let's face it, our bullpen sucks. I mean, I'll cut Melancon some slack, but as long as Pettitte doesn't look terrible, it's smart to leave him in.

154 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:36 pm

What the fuck does this team see in Jose fucking Veras? ENOUGH. CUT HIM.

155 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 9:37 pm

Anyone know a couple of guys from Jersey who could "take care" of Veras?

156 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:37 pm

A suicide squeeze is exciting, but isn't it a stupid move there? Maybe not -- arguably that fourth run (of the lead) is still important, and a fifth would be less important. It feels wrong to me.

157 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:38 pm

I want another South Park episode where Scioscia is the "World's Biggest Douche." Irritation quickly gaining momentum. Bollocks!

158 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:38 pm

[156] that's because we don't have the prowess of mike scosia

159 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 9:38 pm

Suicide squeeze. The scraptastic Angels strike again.

160 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:39 pm

[157] We've faced my two least favorite managers in these two series. And I dislike both of them for the same reason.

161 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 9:40 pm

[153] Yes, Pettitte is better, but he was clearly gassed. Waiting until the bases were loaded was waiting too long.

162 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:41 pm

god, maybe all the "experts" who predicted the yanks pen would be a liability are right. that would suck on so many levels.

163 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:42 pm

[16] You don't like Leyland? He I can dig. The smug ass in the red hat who can't beat the Red Sox in the postseason, not so much.

164 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:42 pm

man michael kay's anectdote about sciosia and the 3b coach is just one more reason to despise him

165 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 9:43 pm

Ok, maybe those Jersey boys could "take care" of the entire Yankee bullpen except for Mo & Bruney.

166 Just Fair   ~  May 1, 2009 9:43 pm

[163] For [160] Whoops. Well, that was nice catch. This game fuckin' sucks.

167 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:44 pm

Edwar can go too. There really probably is a reason he's washed out of baseball twice.

168 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:45 pm

[161] Yeah, clearly it would have been better to have a few more outs worth of Melancon. Uh, I mean, Veras. Or Edwar....
I'd much rather have Andy Pettitte after 90 pitches that what we've seen out of these relievers. Much. Not close.

169 The Hawk   ~  May 1, 2009 9:46 pm

So we got through the rotation exactly one time without a meltdown, and after that, immediately get a meltdown. Terrible.

Of course the bullpen did its part too. Squandering a 4-0 lead at home in the 6th is pretty unforgivable.

170 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:46 pm

Yeah, I hate Leyland. Well, not hate. He just rubs me the wrong way. He's got an "I'm old school, young man" attitude that makes me want to give him the finger.

171 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 9:46 pm

[158] The only thing that bothers me about Sciosia is he gets far more of a pass than people claimed Torre got. He single handedly lost the playoffs for the Angels in 2004, and he's made a ton of stupid moves in subsequent Red Sox series, but no one seems to notice.

172 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 9:54 pm

damn - hoping tex would at least breakthrough a bit

173 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 9:55 pm

It's not just losing. It's losing to a Weaver. And losing to a Weaver after we had him on the ropes.

[170] He lives near me (next town over), in Perrysburg OH. It's easy to hear him yell at the damn kids to get off the lawn.

174 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:57 pm

[173] Perfect.

175 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 9:58 pm

The Red Sox look very bad, if that's any consolation.

176 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:02 pm

If Bruney comes back as he was, and Melanson gets some experience, our BP may be decent next month.

177 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:02 pm

Fuckin' Robbie hits nothing but ropes.

178 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:06 pm

per ESPN:
"I know where I want to be next year," Damon told 1050 ESPN New York. "I want to be here in New York. I also know New York has a lot of young outfielders coming back. Austin Jackson is in the wings. At least, in this situation, I know my chances of coming back could be slim because of the young talent the Yankees do have."

I still consider Melky a #3.5, and Brett a MLer. If we don't get Holliday or Crawford, I might take a flyer on JD for one year. I think JD has more upside then Nady.

I've lost mlb.tv. Anybody watching? Is it something wrong at my end?

182 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:10 pm

[179] Combined effort. Andy, then Melancon, then Veras. Edwar also contributed later. Quite a fiasco.

183 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:11 pm

Now we're rolling. Just had to get into that Angel bullpen.

184 rbj   ~  May 1, 2009 10:11 pm

187 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 10:13 pm

188 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:13 pm

Yankees make it 9-7 on a Pena bases loaded single. One out, 1st and 3rd.

196 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:20 pm

So, I believe Melancon is going to be good. And Bruney. And Phil Coke is okay. We can get by with those guys and Mo, and some mop-up work from maybe Albaladejo, and just dump the other stiffs, right?

He's the quintessential number three hitter.

They never made an out in that inning...

Four straight!

[213] I'm sorry I missed it.

I can't take this not seeing the games.

Really, really happy it was him.

222 ms october   ~  May 1, 2009 10:41 pm

[219] yeah weeping robbie is everything we wanted/hoped/thought he could be. very good d; much, much, much better plate discipline, fouling off pitches he can't hit and just hitting beautifully- you would definitely appreciate the way he is using the whole field.
still don't have him running properly, but hey rome wasn't built in a day.

223 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:41 pm

And all this without ARod or Tex. Maybe our O isn't so bad?

224 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:41 pm

[219] I was listening to Sterling at the end. I also watched the Angels broadcasters during the middle of the game. They are dreadful. Inane, vapid, it's like a parody.

Robbie's D has been good, but his hitting, oh my God. And esp. with your tastes, Weeping, you have to see him. Line drive, line drive, line drive, opposite field, up the middle, just magnificent.

225 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:42 pm

[220] And, please note, the Sox have now been shut-out two games in a row. That's ugly.

226 OldYanksFan   ~  May 1, 2009 10:43 pm

Pena (from TB) is very articulate... and leads MLB with 10 HRs.

[230] We're addicted, huh?

233 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 10:49 pm

There was a report on BP that the Yankees were going to trade Nady to the Reds for their closer, Francisco Cordero. The deal was set up and ready to go, but Bob Castellini (the Reds owner) nixed it. (This was before Nady's injury, of course.)

234 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 10:51 pm

[225] While RSN isn't calling for heads to roll, after last night's game they were using words like "Flop at the Trop," "Big Problems for Papi (0 HR April), and Beckett (7.22 ERA)," "I just gave up seven [expletive] runs in less than five innings ... Yeah, it's frustrating. It's a lot of things." - Josh Beckett, after last night's game, and "When you flip from the Celtics to the Red Sox and see Jonathan Van Every on the mound and Javier Lopez in right field, you know something has gone horribly wrong."

Then tonight?

heh heh

;)

235 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 10:52 pm

Why would they call up Juan Miranda now?

236 Rich   ~  May 1, 2009 10:53 pm

[235] I think it's insurance if Swisher can't go for a while.

237 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:53 pm

[234] Are you actually quoting? From what? I live in RSN too, and I always love a fine whine.

238 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 10:55 pm

[236] That would be brutal if they have to DL Swisher! The Yankees deserved that win since that plunking took him out... IMO.

239 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 10:55 pm

[237] That was from BDD...

: )

240 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 10:56 pm

[236] But Juan Miranda only plays 1B. If anything, they need an outfielder.

241 Rich   ~  May 1, 2009 10:57 pm

[238] They could play with their pen to make room if they had to. It's not like Robertson is being used (which is inexplicable to me, but I won't go there right now).

242 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:58 pm

[239] Oh. I can't read that.

I can read Sox Fan/Yanks Fan. Any blog that's more hardcore Red Sox than that, I just find them pornographic (and not in a good way).

But I know which radio station to tune in tomorrow. That will be pleasant.

243 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 10:59 pm

[240] But they need a bat now. Assuming no Swish, I mean.

Suzyn Waldman to Swisher: Are you going on the DL?
Swisher: You tell them, "No, BLEEP no."

249 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 11:04 pm

[244] Even Donnie Baseball didn't hit .378 this long into a season, Weeping... IIRC...

Those are Gehrig numbers (see also Mantle and DiMaggio)!

250 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 11:05 pm

[234] Assuming no Swish, they need an outfielder.

I suppose Teixeira could play one of the corners if necessary, but he hasn't played outfield very often.

I guess there's Matsui, but I think his outfield days are behind him. Or should be.

251 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 11:07 pm

[247] Seems he's a "forgotten man" lately (see also "My Man Godfrey")...

252 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 11:09 pm

[250] I'd have no problem with Tex at a corner and Miranda at 1B... I guess...

Pretty absurd actually...

: ?

253 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 11:09 pm

[250] No, you're right about that, but they also need a bat. And nobody at Dunder Mifflen is both an outfielder and a bat. Well, nobody who's ready.

254 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 11:10 pm

We could put Mo in RF. The Sox had Javier Lopez out there yesterday, didn't they? When Van Every came in to pitch? I think so.

255 randym77   ~  May 1, 2009 11:13 pm

Girardi says Swisher is "day to day." And also that he'd be surprised if Swisher was in the lineup tomorrow.

256 PJ   ~  May 1, 2009 11:13 pm

Well tonight's win was big to keep the streak alive for Sabathia tomorrow!

Coming from that far behind at home does make it "Home Sweet Home," indeed!

Have a good night all!

257 RIYank   ~  May 1, 2009 11:18 pm

Bye PJ.
My parting shot:

Our 1 through 4 hitters tonight went 2 for 16. Fortunately, the bottom five guys combined for 10 for 19. Pena went 3 for 4, for godsake. So no more complaining about black holes. (Until tomorrow, at least.)

258 Mattpat11   ~  May 1, 2009 11:21 pm

Yankees proved me wrong. I hope they continue to do so. They NEVER win these games against the Angels, and winning two in a row like that is huge.

Wowzers... I almost feel like the Creepy Guy in my own video. We actually won??

260 Bruce Markusen   ~  May 1, 2009 11:49 pm

To keep the happy theme going, I just checked out the web site of the Scranton Yankees and their numbers are impressive. They are currently 17-4 and have nine hitters batting .300 or better. Shelley Duncan has nine home runs in 19 games, Kevin Russo is smoking the ball, Austin Jackson is hitting well (though not for power yet), and Juan Miranda was just named International League player of the week. Even Eric Duncan is having a good season.
