Taster’s Cherce

Tasty new spot on the Upper West Side. Corner of 81 and Amsterdam Ave. Twenty-five years ago there was an ice cream shop called American Pie in the same space. Used to serve pies from Umanoff and Parson–the strawberry rhubarb was slammin. The place didn’t last long but my brother, sister and I spent many hours there with our old man, who worked down the block in a hardware store.

The neighbhorhood is much different now, but the Tangeled Vine is worth the trip, especially the Pork Montaditos (Berkshire pork belly sliders, pickled radish, garlic dijonaise) and the Grilled Hanger Steak (duck fat smashed potatoes, watercress, red wine escargot butter).

I also loved the Charcuterie but I’m a sucker for that stuff on any day.

Shees, I was raised on 81st Street. My mother still lives there and for the life of me, I can't remember American Pie. Perhaps I did take one hit too many.

I will move Tangled Vine on my must-try list up to no. 1.

Thanks for the tip.

Eh, it wasn't there but for a minute. They tried to do a retro 50s diner thing. It was dilapidated and maybe there for less than a year.

Tangled Vine was good, but a little heavy on the salt on some dishes and that's coming from a salt-lover. Thos pork sliders were great though.

The pork melts in your mouth. They got this pork from a guy in Alabama, Henry Fudge, who is kind of the foodie rage right now. I can't really describe it but it's just so damn tasty...

how very kosher of you! ; )

my grandma was kosher, but not my mom in our house. that said, i've never tasted bacon before.

nor have i ever had pie. nope, never tasted an apple pie! (this should bring RI out...)

i'm sure none of you here are shocked! : )

[5] i know what ya mean - i make the opposite type of revelations all the time. how does a kid from queens _____ in georgia...?!

[5] Bama Yankee had some mentalist thing to do with it, I'm guessing >;)

There's a spot in that vicinity on Amsterdam called Harriet's Kitchen that may not look like much and may seem a bit pricey, but they actually make some good mommaburgers. Kitchen, indeed!

[6] No one should be shocked that you are a food critic (i.e. "I hate food!"), but bacon... (gasp!) you've never tasted bacon??? Somebody get this man a B.L.T, stat! >;)

Here's a weird revelation... my grandparents were and Uncle Woodrow is from the south (Macon, GA in fact), but I do not like most forms of southern cuisine. I mean, I like chicken and I like waffles, but I don't like chicken and waffles... traditional soul food is out the window with me as well. I've been criticized for my tastes, or lack thereof (i.e. "What's wrong with that boy!"), but I like what I like. Lately I've been on a red velvet cake kick that I can't explain; that's how it goes. I discover something new to me and indulge until it bores me, but keep it in the small repertoire of Food That I Will Actually Eat. >;)

6) Chicken and waffles always did sound odd, even if you were stoned.

Dude, you've never tried pie or bacon? What's WRONG with you, man? You've just to at least TRY both.

[9] i don't like chicken and waffles together either.
i think i remember you saying you don't like mac n cheese, right?

[6] nope - we ain't shocked.

12 thelarmis   ~  May 6, 2010 1:53 pm

[10] HA! well, i've never had a waffle before, nor have i ever been stoned in my life! : )

i'm not interested in any of it. though, i think i'd like waffles just fine...

all that said, i'll be having a downright delectable thai basil dish for din-din tonight!

We should change the big man's name from Belth to Beef! :-)

14 thelarmis   ~  May 6, 2010 2:02 pm

[13] we can just call him "Meat" - a baseball reference he likes to bestow on that type of player! : )

well, i guess i can be called "Bird" - since that's what i eat. i love the chicken!

[12],[14] Apparently, you eat like one, too >;)

[11] Correct, I do not like sun-roasted brain melt... why not call it what it really is, head cheese...

[13] How about Alex Bell-Peppers-And-Beef? >;)
