Keep it Movin'

The banged-up Yanks are even more banged-up today after a painful win on Friday night in Boston. Cano is out today; Nick Johnson is headed to the DL. But CC Sabathia is on the hill. He’ll go against Clay Buchholz, who has been Boston’s best starter this year.

Never mind the payback, just win, baby.

I know this goes without saying, but sweet Jesus, now would be a good time for Alex and Teix to dial it up a notch or three.

3 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 1:57 pm

the entire bottom half of our order is backups. unreal.

4 thelarmis   ~  May 8, 2010 2:08 pm

[1] scratch that!

according to LoHud NOW:

cano is okay to play! he'll take tims' spot at DH and will be in his customary 5-spot in the lineup! : )

5 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 2:09 pm

Via LoHud, Cano now in at DH.

Dang, Verlander just gave up a BB for the Indians' first baserunner, 3.1 innings in.

6 thelarmis   ~  May 8, 2010 2:11 pm

ugh. nick johnson has a torn tendon in his right wrist. he'll prolly be out til after the all-star break, would be my guess. shocker...

7 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 2:21 pm

[4] damn. his knee must be swollen like mad so i'm real surprised. but i guess at DH that's ok. Tough robbie with the grit.

[3] At that's with hiding Gritner in the top of the order.
[4] Great News!
Cano said he woke up with some soreness after being hit by a pitch last night, but he was moving pretty well this morning. He said there’s a little bit of swelling, but it’s not bad.

“I don’t know (about playing today),” Cano said before he went to the cage. “I have to check first. I haven’t done anything, but I feel good.”

[6] Good find! Where? Found this on the Yankees page:
N. Johnson DH 5/08 15-DAY DL
Is there a reason they wouldn't call up Miranda?

11 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 2:37 pm

[10] He's on the MiLB DL, IIRC.

12 a.O   ~  May 8, 2010 2:53 pm

[11] What's IIRC?

13 Jon DeRosa   ~  May 8, 2010 2:59 pm

lohud has the update on nick "the wrist" johnson, torn tendon as [6] pointed out.

just because you're prepared for something, doesn't make it any easier. like the player, hate the body.

Useless fun fact: I was just poking around b-r.com -- check out what these 4 guys have done this season in the 4th inning:

Jeter -- 5 for 10, 5 RBI, .500
Rodriguez -- 8 for 15, 2 RBI, .533
Cano -- 9 for 17, 7 RBI, .529
Cervelli -- 5 for 6, 3 RBI, .833 (SSS)

42 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 3:44 pm

[41] whoops, I forgot to put in Gritner. In the 4th, he's gone 5 for 9, 2 RBI, .556

Swish is above avg in the 4th, but much better in the 2nd, 5th, and 6th innings. Posada and Teix are abysmal in the 4th. heh

Repost of my question: I realize that Cervelli stands zero chance of producing like Posada, but a few questions: I was too young to follow Posada’s development. How heralded was he as a prospect? Did his minor league career portend his future success?

168 OldYanksFan   ~  May 8, 2010 5:56 pm

This may have been posted before, but it's pretty inportant: From Chad at Lohud:
UPDATE, 3:24 p.m.: Sorry about my mistake in the previous post. Sam was there for the Cashman interview about Johnson. He called up to the press box to tell me what was said, and I wrote the wrong thing when I typed it into the blog. Johnson has an inflamed tendon, not torn. That’s my bad.

Not torn. That could mean 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 months.

169 OldYanksFan   ~  May 8, 2010 6:01 pm

Posada's MILB career: .258 .368 .436 804
Posada's last AAA year: .271 .405 .460 865

So I guess he has been a pleasant surprise, but has always been a decent hitter for a Catcher. Always had a good eye/OBP.

Tarp coming off.

170 OldYanksFan   ~  May 8, 2010 6:07 pm

Game resumes at 6:20 (TV on FX).

171 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:15 pm

Hm. At the moment, FX is showing "Maid in Manhattan". Is everyone confident that we'll see baseball there soon?

172 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:18 pm

[171] aren't you enjoying it?

173 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:19 pm

Aceves up according to Lohud. No cc, and not really surprising.

174 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:21 pm

Yay, there it is!

175 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:21 pm

Okay, Ace for seven outs, then Joba, then Mo?

176 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:21 pm

wait, i was listening to his speech!

177 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:22 pm

All right, we're back.
Can't fucking believe they wouldn't let CC finish that ab. Just awful.

178 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:23 pm

[171] I was nervous about that myself, but it all worked out in the end.

179 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:24 pm

Well, you know, New England weather.

180 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:25 pm

what's all the noise about?

181 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:26 pm

Oh, God, shut up, Tim.
"One of the rare times a switch-hitter changes from being a right hand hitter to being a left hand hitter in the same at bat."

And what would those other rare times be, Tim?

182 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:26 pm

And it's official.

183 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:26 pm

It's official.

184 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:28 pm

[182] [183] I win again!

185 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:30 pm

[184] Heheh ahh ahah ha. :)

186 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:30 pm

Love Manny Del Carmen.

187 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:31 pm

(Although I should note that it was a victory handed to you by wordpress which foiled my first attempt to post because I was "posting too fast." Fucking machine.)

188 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:32 pm

Derek really doesn't look good lately.

189 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:32 pm

Derek looks terrible.

190 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:33 pm

Okay, weeping, that's 1-1.

191 OldYanksFan   ~  May 8, 2010 6:33 pm

[172] Love Jennifer and her 1 and a half booties.
I'm watching on FX now.

192 joe   ~  May 8, 2010 6:34 pm

bastards. I get fox but no FX.

193 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:34 pm

Ah. RSN doing the Wave. Remind me, which sign of the apocalypse is that?

194 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:35 pm

damn.

195 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:35 pm

That Gardner's just got such a sweet swing.
Short and quick.

196 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:35 pm

This is a big inning coming up, for Ace.

197 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:36 pm

[190] Heh heh. :)

198 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:37 pm

[196] He's got it covered. No worries.

199 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:39 pm

Shoulda plunked Youk instead of My Little Pony.

200 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:39 pm

I wish they'd replace Lowell with Ortiz now. Damn.

Now, I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but can not the official scorer still credit Sabathia with a W should things hold?

Because in cases where it's iffy, the official scorer does have discretion to award the W to whomever he deems worthy, right? So in special cases like this, cannot that still be the starter if he left in a case like this and not because he was pulled? Or is the five inning rule non-negotiable?

"This is a roundabout way of me finding it hard to believe that he's about to turn 35."

Some people just have a way with words.

203 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:46 pm

Oh, no. This is getting ridiculous.

Oh noes!

205 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 6:47 pm

OH FER FUCK'S SAKE!

Now Vulture is dinged too?!?!?

206 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:47 pm

[201] No, he can award the win to a subsequent reliever, but not to the starter.

207 randym77   ~  May 8, 2010 6:48 pm

Not another one.

208 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 6:48 pm

Just in case anyone was wondering: I like Joba here, not Boone Logan. But maybe that's just me.

209 OldYanksFan   ~  May 8, 2010 6:48 pm

We are cursed.

210 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:48 pm

What???

You have got to be fucking kidding me.
No, no, no, no, no.

Give me a fucking break.

What have we done to deserve this?

Which god have we offended and how do we make amends?

We need a seer, a Calchas or perhaps an Isaiah or some fucker to tell us how to propitiate whichever deity/deities require propitiation.

This is unbelievable.

211 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 6:51 pm

[210] I'm putting the blame on the Curse of Nick Johnson. Be resigning him even with his injury history, the baseball gods have decided to punish the whole team.

212 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:53 pm

[211] I find that eminently plausible.

213 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 6:54 pm

These are the times that try men's souls ... or at least their roster construction.

Seems appropriate for this to be happening in Boston ...

214 ms october   ~  May 8, 2010 6:54 pm

what the fuck happened to ace - i just tracked this damn game down on fx

215 ms october   ~  May 8, 2010 6:55 pm

well at least may tex is here

216 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 6:55 pm

Yup, it's May.

217 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:55 pm

At least Tex is back. I'm amazed that we're still winning.

218 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 6:56 pm

Most definitively 'tis May.

219 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:56 pm

[214] The booth clowns were talking about a hamstring, I think? But nothing confirmed or anything.

What can we do?

220 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 6:56 pm

Vulture caught a cleat or something, tweaked the hammy or groin.

221 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 6:56 pm

This is truly bizarro world.

222 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 6:57 pm

How about we just call the game now. Even take back the second Tex HR. No more injuries.

223 ms october   ~  May 8, 2010 6:57 pm

[219] [220] thanks guys - jeez let's stop this injury plague now

224 seamus   ~  May 8, 2010 6:58 pm

[223] now we're spreading it like a virus to the red sox.

225 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 6:58 pm

Oh, this is just ricockulous.

On second thoughts, I rather hope I don't see Joba or Mo on the mound today.

226 cult of basebaal   ~  May 8, 2010 7:05 pm

Looks like it's really May for Robbie as well ...

227 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 7:07 pm

I bet zombies could run on the Boston catchers.

228 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 7:08 pm

I am, right?

229 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 7:10 pm

Nice hitting, Swish.

234 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 7:12 pm

And they keep digging...

235 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 7:12 pm

[233] Good point.

236 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:21 pm

Okay, Dave, big test for you.

237 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 7:22 pm

5 run lead, Joba 8th, Mo 9th. You need 3 outs before 5 runes Dave.

238 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:22 pm

I love the shape of Dave's curve. The location leaves something to be desired, but it's shapely.

239 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 8, 2010 7:23 pm

I'm off to the automobile and The John Sterling Show. You kids hold down the fort. RI, you're in charge: if somehow we squander this game or there's another injury, I'm coming for you.

240 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:24 pm

[239] Holy shit.
Okay, I'm ready.

241 Diane Firstman   ~  May 8, 2010 7:27 pm

where is the game? I just got in ...

242 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:27 pm

Oh, cripes. Dave's not pitching that badly!
Oh, Joba. Okay, that's fine.

243 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:28 pm

[241] It's on FX. You on-line guide will tell you it's "Maid in Manhattan", but it's not.

[241] FX, whatever channel # that is for you. Directv has it at 248

245 Diane Firstman   ~  May 8, 2010 7:29 pm

and we have ANOTHER injury???

246 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 7:29 pm

Update via LoHud:
UPDATE, 7:27 p.m.: Aceves has a stiff lower back. That’s a lingering problem for him. Doesn’t sound good.

More rain?

248 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 8, 2010 7:31 pm

Game still on? another 5-hour Yans-Sox JoeWest Special?

CC hit Pony? Was he thrown out at 4 2/3? Coffee...game thread...

249 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:32 pm

[248] No, rain delay. That explains both the absurdly long time, and CC's vanishing.

250 Diane Firstman   ~  May 8, 2010 7:34 pm

McCarver and Buck couldn't sprain their respective tongues ...:-(

251 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:34 pm

Pedroia and Youkalis, if one's the heart the other is the soul of this team.

You could puke, couldn't you? Hey, Pedroia, Youk, Puke!

252 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 8, 2010 7:35 pm

[249] Thanks, catching up now. Seems like everyone is enjoying Tim & Joe today :)

Joba to the rescue!!

253 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 7:36 pm

[250] Oh, funny you should say that. There was a three minute segment of golden silence in the booth, in honor of Ernie Harwell and Robin Roberts. You can detect this starting at comment 47.

254 rbj   ~  May 8, 2010 7:43 pm

I just had a depressing thought. Joe & Timmah announcing today, and tomorrow we get Jon Miller (who can be good, by himself) and Joe Morgan.

262 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 8, 2010 7:51 pm

Swisher pulled a 98mph fastball to right field..MLB hitters are truly impressive! I don't think i'd even see the ball before it hit the glove!

There ya go. Remember, Joba? You're good.

271 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 8:05 pm

Oh, wait, now I understand the Beltre "run prevention" thing. It's when he's batting. But now I wonder why Theo was so interested in that prospect.

Yay, bullpen roulette!

272 RIYank   ~  May 8, 2010 8:09 pm

Uh.
Damaso Marte comes in and strikes out the lefty on three pitches.
