"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Luck Be a Score Truck Tonight

Yanks go for the quick sweep of the Twins. Minnie won the last game in the New York series and now try to save face at home. Nice-looking new ball park out there, too. There were some gorgeous shots of the sunset and the moon against the city skyline on the YES broadcast last night.

We’ll see if Javy’s finger is a problem. Or anything else for that matter. But he’s had a couple of decent starts. Hope he builds on it.

Be nice to have have the Score Truck show up and take ’em back home to the BX in style.

Whadda ya say, boys?

I want 8+ runs tonight. How 'bout dingers from Alex and Tex? Whadda ya say?

2 cult of basebaal   ~  May 27, 2010 7:59 pm

Derek Jeter SS
Brett Gardner CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Juan Miranda DH
Francisco Cervelli C
Kevin Russo LF

On one hand, Gardner is back in the 2 spot a game after switching him and Swisher paid off big.

On the other hand, Russo continues to get at bats in LF regardless of pitcher handedness.

3 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:13 pm

way to go, Jetes!

4 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:14 pm

Dammit. He's off. Late on the 0-1 heater RIGHT OVER THE PLATE.

Lucky ass almost looked at strike three.

=)

16 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 27, 2010 8:22 pm

That's got some nice break, that pitch. Some kind of slider?

17 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 27, 2010 8:24 pm

Why would you walk someone in front of Mauer?

Hehh eheh eheh.

Well, I'm stuck at the airport in Tampa cause of some bad weather in NY, mostly delays in LGA, but I found a corner, an electrical socket, and I'm able to listen to the game from my blackberry. Almost feels like home, just that I'm 3+ hour plane ride away. Sometimes this as good as it gets.

20 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:27 pm

A Rod's just late, the fucker. Once it clicks he'll be a monster.

21 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:28 pm

Meanwhile, I like the ad for Blue Bunny ice cream behind home plate, surrounding the left handed battters like Mauer here.

"For those who aren't cool like me, who don't know hip hop."
That was actually very funny. Kay actually made me laugh.

23 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:28 pm

Jesus. Well, c'mon, when you hang a horseshit slider like that, what do you expect Mauer to do with it. Now, let's see the Twins come through same spot, first and third, one out..

24 Dimelo   ~  May 27, 2010 8:29 pm

Geez, Javy.

25 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:29 pm

37 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:34 pm

Classic. That was right out of Bugs Bunny. Tex reached up with his left arm, the ball stuck in his glove as it went racing by, and Tex almost looked like Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

Happy BIRTHDAY MARK!

He needs to change speeds and attack the zone. If he can't figure out how to keep them off-balance, he's a dead duck out there.

Not sure quite what his plan is.

45 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 8:39 pm

Not a bad pitch Nick popped up, guess it had just enough late moment so that he couldn't square it up...

How is Javy looking? Were they cheap runs?

Excuse the non-game thread interjection, but just caught up on the movie chat from earlier. This quote from our hots AB killed me: "Todd Solondz. My life isn’t long enough to put up with his misanthropic nonsense." 100% agree!

I've walked out/shut off many films. Have particular animosity for anything with Meg Ryan ("In The Cut" was bad for so many reasons, the horrid Jane Campion and awful Meg Ryan together trying to be "edgy"? ) Can't stand Steven Speilberg either for the most part, and on the arty-side of the street, I have trouble sitting through most Fellini films..there are at least 6 Italian maestros that surpass him in le grande cinema!

69 cult of basebaal   ~  May 27, 2010 8:59 pm

This has the makings of a very long game; though, at least it'll be over quickly at this rate ...

70 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 27, 2010 9:03 pm

[68] Far from cheap. The Yankees are lucky not to be down by 7.

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 27, 2010 9:06 pm

That guy should be removed from the stadium.

74 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 9:06 pm

That guy behind Kim was a clown, the second guy with the broom was dumb too but biting the pork chop was good. I don't know why Kay thinks it's disgusting.

75 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 27, 2010 9:07 pm

That was sort of funny (for those not watching YES..Kim Jones being harrassed by a Yankee fan on camera. He ate her Pork Chop on a stick).

76 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 9:07 pm

Kay needs to shut up and stop whinning. He sounds like he's still doing his day job.

78 NYYfan22   ~  May 27, 2010 9:08 pm

[75] wait. she was standing there with pork chop on a stick? Was that what the piece was about? And then he leaned over and bit it?

79 randym77   ~  May 27, 2010 9:09 pm

Why does Kim have a pork chop on a stick?

80 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 27, 2010 9:11 pm

[78] Other topics discussed, but she mentioned the PC on a stick, and then this guy took a bite out of it. Kim was really exposed to the crowd in the outfield, and she couldn't do anything about it.

81 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 27, 2010 9:12 pm

Gardner's refound his stroke, it looks. More liners and flares than grounders.

82 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 27, 2010 9:13 pm

[78] I'm sure that guy wouldn't have done it had it been a male reporter.

83 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 9:14 pm

I don't understand! That was a terrible pitch to swing at on 3-0.

84 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 27, 2010 9:15 pm

When they turn you loose on 3-0 it doesn't mean you have to swing at ball four. (At this moment) Teix could help bury the oil well leak.

85 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 9:17 pm

[101] Don't forget Jaws my friend. That or Raiders would get my vote for best Spielberg, I think.

Just watched Schindler's List again a few months ago for the first time since it came out. In some ways, it holds up. Fiennes is still incredible (might just get my vote for most humanly evil character ever put to film) as is the acting in general (Kingsley, Neeson, etc). The cinematography is aching beautiful and individual scenes still retain a terrible, searing power.

AAAAAAH. Gah. Dammit, Javy.

111) My favorite Speilberg movies are: Jaws, Raiders, Close Encounters, Temple of Doom. I think E.T and Schindler's are really strong too but they aren't movies I necesarily ever have the urge to re-watch. Lookin at a list of movies he's directed I'm suprised by how many I don't care for.

119 OldYanksFan   ~  May 27, 2010 9:49 pm

We will have some great pitching (like the last 2 games) and we will have some poor pitching. I accept that. But our offense should rarely falter. It's not the injuries, as our scrubs have certainly held their own. Our O is really built on the backs of ARod, Teix and Jeter. Po and Cano carried us for a while, but this team needs our 3 big guys to produce.

It's very disheartening to see our O struggle like this.

120 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 27, 2010 9:50 pm

[111] No no no no NO! :) Totally predictable performances by the usually solid Kingsley and Fiennes. Connect the dots Hollywood manipulation: Speilberg + black & white + Holocaust = oscar winner. There are a dozen better films on the Holocaust out there, starting with the overwhleming "Shoah" documentary. (And Jerry Lewis' "The Day the Clown Cried" :)

131 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 27, 2010 10:05 pm

[120] This might not be the place to have an in depth critical discussion of Spielberg's place in cinema. He is sometimes predictable, and he sometimes does pull the the most common denominator emotional nerve, and his direction of some great actors is often wooden BUT, his films are made with attention to the upmost detail. The cinematography is the best, the period props and vibe are impeccable, and more.

At least his blockbusters have intelligence compared to someone like Jerry Bruckheimer, etc.

132 Mattpat11   ~  May 27, 2010 10:09 pm

Is it time to reopen the "NL pitcher" discussion?

133 cult of basebaal   ~  May 27, 2010 10:10 pm

[120] Well, I was interrupted by Javy, so I didn't get to part where I agreed that I'd call it overrated. It's not a *bad* film, far from it, but I'd also argue that it isn't a *great* film, though it does retain an honest power even upon repeat viewings. Is it manipulative? Sure, then again, so is The Pianist or even Shoah (which is a documentary and thus really belongs in another category of discussion altogether, frankly). It's a matter of degree, Spielberg is notorious for not trusting his audience and there are a number of scenes that would have been much better served with a lighter and subtler hand.

As for Fiennes' performance, all I can say is, after seeing seeing several thousand films in the theater and probably more than 10,000 overall, I think you're utterly and completely off-base on it.

You can say something like "the usually solid" Fiennes, but the indisputable truth is everything Fiennes has in his career is a result of the perception of the quality of that performance. He was a nobody before he played Goeth, his next step was a lead in Redford's Quiz Show (to rave reviews) and his next role after that resulted in a Best Actor nomination.

YMMV, of course ...

134 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 27, 2010 10:10 pm

[131] You make a good point, but I would argue that those things are not what makes cinema an art. Anyone with a Hollywood budget can find talented prop people, art directors and cinematographers. Speilberg's problem is that his ambitions as an artist with something to "say" do not match his talents...He can hit home runs with Minorty Report and Jaws, but films with any kind of emotional depth are beyond him...Try sitting through "Always" or "AI"...even Private Ryan..once you get past the Normandy scene there's just nothing there...

[134] Minority Report is dreck, plain and simple. Effective dreck it seems, but filled with lazy writing and plot construction, with an original premise that really doesn't stand up to thoughtful review. One of my least favorite Spielberg efforts. Angry making, even ...

Before I add anything on Saving Private Ryan, I'm curious what you though of The Thin Red Line, if you've seen it ...

[134] Cinema? Art? Hollywood? I think that ship has sailed for the final time in the middle '90s. The business is driven by films that appeal to 15 year old boys who have to be blasted out of their seat by sound and 3-D CGI who must see it the first weekend out. A decent film slips by once in a while, but relatively speaking, no one sees it. And if it is decent it is hailed. Was "Up In The Air" really that good? But at least it was a small contained story, with good acting, and adult themes. Should "Crash" have been a best picture? It was ok, but it would have been among many good films if it was made in the 70s.

It's remarkable that the Coen Bros conintue to get funding for films.

150 Alex Belth   ~  May 27, 2010 10:28 pm

134) I think Spielberg gets a lot of emotional depth in movies like ET and CLose Encounters. But he's not a sophisticated "serious" filmmaker, I get it. His limitations are pronounced. But in some of his great pop movies, he's not heartless or only sentimental. He had a real human touch to go with all that technique too.

[149] I wouldn't last 15 minutes watching "Up In The Air" am sure...never saw "Crash", heard it was excruciating.. Coen Bros are diamonds in the rough. Others like Charles Burnett are not so lucky..

[144] Missed "The Thin Red Line" but looks interesting...

Sorry to hijack the gamethread with all this movie talk! But looks like an unsatisfying game...

154 Mattpat11   ~  May 27, 2010 10:31 pm

[146] Kay said that Girardi unequivocally said that as of now, Aceves will not have back surgery.

My Girardi->English dictionary translated that as "Aceves will have back surgery tomorrow."

155 cult of basebaal   ~  May 27, 2010 10:33 pm

[137] Seen it. Idi i smotri ("Go and Look" in direct translation from Russian, "Come and See" was chosen as the title in English language release in reference to a quotation from the Book of Revelations: "And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.") is a fantastic film. The sequence that starts in the village and ends with Florya floundering through the bog might just be the most horrifyingly claustrophobic scene I've ever experienced, even though it happens under the most open, bluest skies imaginable.

I especially liked that fact that Klimov replied, when asked why he never made another film after making Idi i smotri, "Why? I've said everything I needed to say ...:"

[174] On my Netflix list somewhere. I'd suggest the HBO stuff in this order ... "The Wire", "Band of Brothers", "The Sopranos", "The Pacific".

If you're interested in it, I've got all (10) of the episodes of "The Pacific" in 720p HD, if you're up for the download ...

180 matt b   ~  May 27, 2010 11:15 pm

[150] Well-said, Alex. Look, let's be honest, Spielberg's reputation among "serious" film fans has been hurt by the fact that he makes hugely popular movies. Do I think he's in the Pantheon? No, I don't - but he's an immensely gifted director with a long and varied career who has been responsible for some truly wonderful and unique moments at the movies. Sure, he's made more than his share of stuff that didn't work (I've actively loathed some of his stuff), but he's also remarkably prolific.

181 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 27, 2010 11:36 pm
