Thanks Alex!

Now, if you Banterites want to help me .... I need the correct spelling of as many athletes, broadcasters, coaches (deceased or living, local or national) as you can find. Point me to a list you've found ... post a couple of notable ones you know.

I know Krzyzewski and Salatalamacchia and Boumtje-Boumtje. :-)

How exciting! Remember, I before E except in Teixeira!

3 Alex Belth   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:53 pm

"Joe West" Sometimes the easy ones are tricky.

"Who wrote Swaney River?"

"Homina, homina...Ed Norton?"

4 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:53 pm

Heh ... I was just telling Alex how I remember Teix .... its EI-EI ....

Here's SI.com's list of the toughest names to spell in sports:

Good luck!

6 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:55 pm

Yeah .... got that one already transcribed onto my study list ....

Hockey players are gonna be the death of me ....

7 RIYank   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:55 pm

I assume [1] was a typo, but just in case!

8 RIYank   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:58 pm

Oh, god, hockey players, they are going to be murder, you're right.

You know, I heard Patrick Roy's name about fifty times before I knew what name it was. I kept thinking, "Wa, must be a Chinese hockey player, who knew?" French spelling alone is a horror, let alone Czech.

Good luck!

9 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 1:58 pm

Yes ... a typo .... phew!

I remember it as Salt ala Macchia. :-)

10 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:00 pm

[4] Teixeira plays twice as hard in Extra Innings... (corny yeah, but still effective)

11 Sliced Bread   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:02 pm

[6] hockey schmockey, you're gonna win it with Suzyn Waldman at the buzzer.

12 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:04 pm

i know it is probably an easy one for you, but a lot of people seem to put two "u"s in Mutombo

dikembe mutombo

good luck!

13 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:05 pm

or, if they are bastards:

Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo

14 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:08 pm

I hope I get some announcers ...

DeWayne Staats
Don Criqui

15 Sliced Bread   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:12 pm

Jhonny Peralta
Chone Figgins
these guys are lay-ups compared to the hockey dudes.

16 Sliced Bread   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:13 pm

oh, and don't fall into the Carl Pavano trap. The correct spelling is:

17 thelarmis   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:19 pm

oh, this is sooo cool! good luck, diane!

don't forget Grudz & Doug Eyechart.

i loved spelling bees as a kid. the ones i see on espn now are just crazy. sooo difficult. the kids must be scared as all get out!!!

hey diane, this'll help keep your mind off things. the 2 new Rush tunes are available for streaming!!! (they're both *really* good, too!!!)

18 Bama Yankee   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:21 pm

Too bad it's not Jeopardy...being able to write "Who is Karim Garcia?" for Final Jeopardy (if you didn't know the correct answer) would be awesome... ;-)

19 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:23 pm

Grudzielanek and Mientkiewicz .... got them

The rules state that the 1st round or so will be local, so I've taken the entire historical rosters of Yanks and Mets, and highlighted the toughies ... I still have to work on the Rangers, Nets, Knicks and Islanders ... will they throw in Giorgio Chinaglia, Franz Beckenbauer?

and thanks for the link!

20 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:24 pm

The closest I would ever get to being on Jeopardy! would be in the studio audience .... my knowledge isn't broad enough.

21 seamus   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:27 pm

wow, cool. Go Diane!

22 thelarmis   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:29 pm

[18] : )

[20] we can all live vicariously through Emma!

23 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 2, 2010 2:33 pm

[16] Hideki Irabu:

That one's debatable and you might get a point for replacing the asterisk. But then, you might get a point taken away, too. Depends on the judge's constitution, I suppose...

24 Bama Yankee   ~  Jun 2, 2010 3:21 pm

Don't forget Jose Offerman...
You just have to remember two F's, four E's and one right hook... ;-)

25 Professor Longnose   ~  Jun 2, 2010 4:22 pm

Charlie Brown blew a spelling bee when he was asked to spell "maze" and answered, "M-A-Y-S."

26 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 2, 2010 4:51 pm

[24] Reminds me of the old joke about Jose:

Q: How many E's are in Jose Offerman?
A: About 35 each season.

27 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 2, 2010 4:53 pm

Actually, in the movie version of "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" .... ol' Chuck blows the bee by misspelling BEAGLE as BEAGEL.
