If aybody is following on TV, would love to follow some updates and commentary. No chance to see it at work today.

2 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 10:23 am

Oh man, down a goal already. If the US lose, they will need a miracle to advance. They need to at least draw. What a let down.

3 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 10:51 am

Down 2-0 now...absent a massive comeback, the World Cup is over.

4 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 10:52 am

US team pulls a Knoblauch on the 2nd goal

5 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 10:58 am

The US could hide their 2006 showing because of a tough draw. But outside of a mega-slop fest draw vs Italy, they played poorly there, too.

This year, they had the draw they needed, and there's no hiding whatever the result ends up. 2 goals in 45 minutes? At this point, I'd be surprised at 2 goals in the entire World Cup.

Assuming people want to continue watching this fiasco and they are not near a TV, you can watch on the internet (legally however in Spanish) at Univision:

7 Start Spreading the News   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:01 am

BTW, they have all the matches.

8 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:02 am

[5] Without a doubt...if the U.S. can't make the knockout round with this draw, when? For a country with some many athletes (and so many supposedly playing at the youth level), it's a shame they can't find enough players to field a better team. This is why soccer will never catch on in the U.S....they're simply not enough good players who are Americans.

9 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:02 am

[5] They've had 3 or 4 great chances, but didn't test the keeper one time.

10 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:05 am

Incredible goal by Donovan!! Back on life support!

11 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:06 am

[6] just got on in time to see that goal!

[10] what a shot!

12 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:07 am

Just missed the equalizer!!!

13 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:08 am

gooch, gotta get there!

14 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:08 am

Guess Coach Bradley chewed them out during halftime

15 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:09 am

Here we go now...need some sustained pressure.

16 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:11 am

Donovan is playing great right now...he needs one more teammate to join him.

17 knuckles   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:13 am

Slovenia is the size of New Jersey and has 25% as many people.
Ugh.

18 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:13 am

we have no accuracy on the service apart from donovan's passes.

19 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:13 am

Dempsey's passing has been poor.

20 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:14 am

dempsey just gagged a break w/ no pressure on him at all.

21 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:14 am

Have to play this game in 5 minute chunks.

22 Just Fair   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:14 am

A recess with 1st and 2nd graders entails lots of running around, mindless bickering, complaining about injuries to the powers that be, and going inside with little accomplished. Just like watching the World Cup.

23 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:15 am

No free kick? Are you serious?

24 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:15 am

Altidore has a world of talent, but so little instinct.

25 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:15 am

altidore showed zero instinct there

26 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:17 am

william, we are in sync today

27 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:17 am

[25] U.S. seems unable to find the full package. Our players either have all athleticism or all instinct, but very little cross over.

28 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:17 am

[26] We need the U.S. to get in sync!

29 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:18 am

A more polished team with the same chances in this game would be leading Slovenia 4-2. We need Kobe!

30 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:20 am

our best chances are all coming from donovan's free kicks. only problem is that he isn't there to finish them too.

31 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:20 am

I really worry about the refs in international competition. For some, it often feels like this is their chance to stick it to the big bad U.S.

32 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:22 am

Another wasted opportunity...this team simply does not anticipate.

If they don't tie before 75, they wont win.

33 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:23 am

Howard has probably been the second best passer for the U.S. That's not a good thing.

34 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:26 am

About time with the yellow card.

35 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:26 am

Come on Donovan!

36 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:27 am

damnit!

37 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:27 am

Damn it!!! What a chance.

38 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:27 am

univision down and out. take us home william!

39 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:28 am

Frustrating...this is why you can't sleep for the first 40 minutes.

40 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:28 am

[38] Try ESPN3....they should have the feed too.

41 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:29 am

[40] 3 is blocked here.

42 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:29 am

Another yellow for Slovenia...they are simply attacking the player with the ball.

43 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:29 am

Wasteful flick on goal...just bad form.

44 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:30 am

Altidore doesn't use his body.

45 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:31 am

The ref has been awful. So bad it makes you wonder.

Meanwhile, there is a ball in the box and more US players are watching than attacking.

46 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:32 am

A third yellow for Slovenia on a challenge to Donovan.

47 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:32 am

Don't remember the game being this physical, the US is getting mugged out there

48 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:32 am

Dempsey makes little with the ball on his foot just to the right of the goal.

49 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:33 am

Donovan is in the middle now.

50 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:33 am

75 minute....US is running out of time.

51 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:34 am

Awful cross by Altidore...his play has been very subpar.

52 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:34 am

Very little urgency from the US.

53 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:35 am

all out now, guys. have to swarm the box.

54 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:36 am

Hercules Gomez coming on

55 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:37 am

goal diff doesn't matter, they'll never make it thorugh w/ only 4 points. they have to draw here. everybody up.

56 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:37 am

Altidore has been a killer on the side. He has squandered so many chances.

U.S. replaces defender with a striker.

57 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:38 am

Bradely overran a perfect pass and then put a compromised shot on goal. Should have played a pass.

58 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:38 am

Equalizer by Bradley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

59 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:38 am

yes!

60 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:38 am

gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

61 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:39 am

Michael Bradley!!!!!

62 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:39 am

Altidore, who I have been killing, put a nice header onto Bradely's foot.

63 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:39 am

And, I believe it was Donovan who put the ball on Altidore's dome.

64 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:40 am

[60] Wow, that looked cool in Safari (went right through the margin, right off the edge of the page!)

65 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:40 am

Stay poised

66 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:40 am

But play for the win.

67 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:40 am

ok, hold on fellas

68 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:41 am

Now some good defense by Bradley.

69 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:41 am

Now how do you play it? Put a fullback in for balance, or just go for the three points?

70 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:42 am

Free kick time!

71 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:42 am

dang

72 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:42 am

Goal is disallowed by the ref...awful call. FIFA has a credibility problem.

73 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:43 am

Oh no!
What is the call? WTF??

74 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:43 am

[72] But what was the call?

Oh, that's horrible. Horrible.

75 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:43 am

The ref not only disallowed a goal, but missed a clear penalty kick for the U.S.

76 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:44 am

[73] I think he's drunk

77 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:44 am

what was the call on the not-goal? my spanish sucks

78 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:45 am

Even the announcers are taking the ref to task

79 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:45 am

[75] No doubt about it.
But of course that P-kick would never be called, because it would have just been an advantage goal.

80 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:46 am

[77] I think off sides, but te replay showed it clearly wasn't.

81 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:46 am

i can't believe i'm missing all of this.

82 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:46 am

[77] Nobody knows. (I'm listening to an American and a Brit -- the 'neutral Brit' is completely sure the ref blew the call.)

83 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:47 am

[80] But no linesman raised a flag. If the call was off-sides, that's utterly inexcusable.

84 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:47 am

[81] Jon, you know it's streaming live on ESPN3 online, right?

85 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:47 am

[83] Actually, he called a foul on the US. Ridiculous.

86 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:48 am

I said it earlier...when third world refs are involved, they always seem to have questionable calls against world power nations.

87 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:48 am

[85] the US foul was clearly "victims of muggins"

88 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:48 am

[84] yeah, i can't get it at work.

89 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:49 am

The tie would have been a reason to celebrate, but having the game stolen by the ref just sours you on the enitre tournament.

90 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:49 am

[85] Terrible. But offside would have been worse. Calling a foul could just be an honest mistake. (Joycian, you might say.)

91 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:50 am

[88] Oh, damn.

http://espn.go.com/espn3/player?id=6227&league=FIFA

Try Firefox if you haven't....

92 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:51 am

Now, here's something I always wondered. When there's a significant stoppage in stoppage time, how do they let the players know how much time is left?

93 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:51 am

The tie puts the US in good shape...they probably advance with a win over Algeria (which if they dont get, they dont belong anyway). Still, not getting the win just cost them the top seed, which is massive.

94 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:52 am

[92] They wait for the whistle....not sure why FIFA doesnt manage that better.

95 RIYank   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:52 am

Oh, that's the answer. They actually don't add more time!

This is the single stupidest part of soccer, stoppage time.

Well, a fantastic game, despite the worst officiating performance of the Cup.

96 Jon DeRosa   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:54 am

thanks for all the updates today guys. what a nice 2nd half. i will be sure to check out that mysterious 3rd goal. yahoo game cast says it was an offside, but they could be wrong.

97 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 11:57 am

FIFA is like boxing...too many results leave you wondering about the decision makers. It really is a disgrace for a sport that is the world's most popular.

98 ny2ca2dc   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:01 pm

Well that was pretty annoying but also pretty awesome.

99 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:04 pm

The worst part is the arrogant FIFA wont even acknowledge the incompetence/bias of their refs.

100 rbj   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:05 pm

Missed the game, but a tie, with Slovenia? And having to rally for the tie? What's next, the Yankees dropping 2 of three to a scuffling Phillies team?

Oh, wait.

Bad show all around.

Adding insult to injury, Findley is lost for game 3 because he got a yellow card for a hand ball that actually bounced of his face.

This ref was a disgrace.

102 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:07 pm

According to Donovan, the ref wouldn't even tell the players what the call was.

103 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:10 pm

I haven't been this upset since Joe West ruled Cano out of the baseline in game 5 of the 2005 ALDS.

104 Raf   ~  Jun 18, 2010 12:12 pm

[102] Probably because he didn't know what the call was

105 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 18, 2010 5:39 pm

Well, a fantastic game, despite the worst officiating performance of the Cup.

Not sure that it was even the worst officiating performance of the day.

Go back and watch Germany v Serbia

Anyways, with England tieing failing to beat Algeria, we're back in control of our destiny on Wednesday.

Worked out much better than I ever thought it could have down 2-0 at half ...
