No matter what happens in this game, I'm glad it's not going to keep me up so ****ing late.

2 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 3:17 pm

Ah, man. 30 minutes of sitting in a meeting in front of my computer machine before I can race home and rant like a lunatic. Good guys in seven.
Go Yankees!

3 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 3:30 pm

looks like the first couple of hours on the iphone at work. should be interesting. also, i fully expect the trolls in full force today, especially if we are losing.

4 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 3:41 pm

So, losing Tex hurts in most ways. But the way he was hitting, our lineup might actually be better today. I know that sounds weird to say and without a doubt we'll miss his fielding. He's clearly got an issue where he presses in pressure situations. He needs to find a way to relax in those instances. His playoff stats with us are dismal.

5 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 3:52 pm

I'm getting that feeling that I'm going to be a very unhappy man in about four hours.

Which might be a good thing because I've had good feelings about the past three games

6 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:01 pm

Let's Go YANKEES

Bob Sheppard would have been 100 today, and the Mick would have been 79.

10 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:07 pm

[9] wow. Happy Birthday Bob and Mick. It would have been cool if Bob could have made it to #100.

11 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:07 pm

9) WOW, awesome

12 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:08 pm

I don't want AJ Burnett with his head in his hands to be the lasting memory of this season

13 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:08 pm

i'm apparently 15 seconds behind i think. that sucks

14 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:08 pm

Oh boy

15 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:09 pm

I was offered free tickets to go today by 2 different people ... couldn't make it. Maybe just as well.

16 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:09 pm

Ugh.

17 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:10 pm

15) NO WAY! Yanks are winning today!

18 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:10 pm

that was a discouragingly loud yankees sucks chant there.

19 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:10 pm

Cripes this place is empty

20 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:11 pm

yeah the DP boys!

21 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:11 pm

Hey, guys.

22 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:15 pm

i totally missed that hamilton got a hit.

23 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:17 pm

[22] It seems to happen fast these last few days.

24 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:20 pm

Help us Obi Wan Cano, you're our only hope.

25 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:22 pm

They haven't been hitting in a long time.

26 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:23 pm

Ah, I see the Yankees' plan: wait out the opposing starter and then hand over a 0-0 game to a very well rested Mariano Rivera.

27 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:23 pm

it's bad when even robbie is sucking.

28 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:24 pm

[25] But they're well rested

29 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:26 pm

I'mnot giving up, but everything seemed different with the Teixera injury.

30 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:27 pm

Ian Kinsler has child bearing hips.

31 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:27 pm

[29] Not to yank your chain, but what exactly feels different? Every time I look up during this series, it seems, a Ranger is on base or a guy in pinstripes is grounding out weakly.

32 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:27 pm

CC doesn't appear to have much going for him today.

33 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:28 pm

[30] I love a relevant comment.

34 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:28 pm

[31] What he said

35 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:28 pm

[30] It was funny--I'm not being snotty.

36 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:29 pm

[31] The sense that we could come back. It just felt different. The stadium sounded different, too. Could just be me, but it felt different.

37 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:30 pm

[36] The stadium was in shock, no doubt, but the three-run bomb is what changed things in that game.

38 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:30 pm

[31] Not that the injury is why they're losing or anything. They'r elosing because they haven't gotten hits with men in scoring position.

39 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:31 pm

Ah, and now the Ron Washington hagiography begins.

40 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:31 pm

[37] Yes, I agree. I'm not saying the injury makes a difference, just that it took the wind out of my and other fans' sails.

41 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:31 pm

[36] i totally concur

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:32 pm

Alright, I've made it to my lucky bar ... LET'S GO YANKEES!!!

43 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:33 pm

Washington is proof that when the players execute, not even a crappy manager can louse it up. So is our 2009 WS win. Yes, I think Girardi is a total hack, but if the Yankees hit, it doesn't matter.

44 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:33 pm

Sabathia is...passable.

45 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:34 pm

that's how you do it cc!

46 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:35 pm

[43] These days, managing is all about soothing egos. If any team ever had a manager who knew strategy, they'd win an extra 10 games.

47 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:35 pm

Sabathia is .... possibly hurt? (un-CC-like performances in the playoffs)

48 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:36 pm

Frankly, I've got a whole lot more confidence in Berkman, from both sides of the plate than I did in Teix by last night ...

49 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:36 pm

[43] Honestly, Girardi always struck me as being extremely bright, and by all indications he is. But I find myself cringing at some of the things he says to the media, and he manages at about the same brain activity level it seems. I don't know if that makes sense. Like today, he was talking about he looked into his players eyes and they're ready to go, and it just sounded so stupid.....

50 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:37 pm

Good, glad A-Rod isn't chasing garbage.

51 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:38 pm

[46] What's funny is it seems most of the keen strategic minds have personality disorders (e.g. Billy Martin).

53 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:40 pm

Good stuff Thames!

54 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:40 pm

[49] I think Girardi is a fairly smart guy who is wound way too tight and hence overthinks situations and makes horrible decisions. He's also dishonest with the media and fans.

55 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:40 pm

[52] I'll never forget him saving Curt Schilling for a game 7 in 2001 during a game 4 that would've put them up 3-1. Losing a battle for a war, eh?

56 Yankster   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:41 pm

Wilson loose the strike zone?

57 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:42 pm

[49] I'm only half kidding when I say he outsmarts himself constantly. He seems overly concerned with doing the unexpected most of the time, like we play in a port where the opposing manager doesn't have plenty of time to react or something.

58 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:44 pm

That looked like it was gonna be closer

59 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:45 pm

a clutch hit!

60 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:45 pm

[54] Great analysis. Reminds me of the first multiple choice test I took in college, I thought every question had a trick behind it, over-thought and second-guessed EVERYTHING, and bombed it. Luckily I adjusted...

Good stuff A-Rod, and Jorge!

61 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:45 pm

I still don't know why Miranda wasn't added to the roster...but Berkman has been holding his own despite having to bat RHP.

Bad send but it works out!!

62 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:45 pm

My man Posada!

63 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:46 pm

67 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:47 pm

I thought Berkman, and then Posada, were dead to rights on that one...

68 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:47 pm

Every decision to advance was bad, and every one of them worked out! The worm is turning.

69 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:47 pm

I'm not sure that's a complete analysis of Girardi. There are times when he uses certain rules that I think are just nuts. At times like that, he needs to think more case by case. Like his tendency to change pitchers between innings.

70 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:48 pm

[61] Never really been a fan of Miranda. Feels like a Cuban Andy Phillips

71 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:48 pm
72 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:49 pm

[67] They should have had Posada twice

73 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:49 pm

[70] A Cuban Andy Phillips. That's funny.

74 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:49 pm

Posada was not hustling home at all. I mean, he's slow, but geez.

75 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:49 pm

[70] Not a big fan either, but what does Nuñez give them? Another PR to play behind Golson and Peña?

76 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:50 pm

Sigh. They always sucker me back in.

77 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:50 pm

Made it home just in time to see that circus. Wow.
Jorge shouda been thrown out 2x. : )

78 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:50 pm

[72] The man has magic feet.

79 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:51 pm

I don't think Miranda is much, he just has more use than Núnez.

80 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:51 pm

[75] I'm not sure thats not more than Miranda has to offer.

81 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:51 pm

I keep thinking of the old Mariano Duncan '96 mantra: "We play today, we win today. 'Das it."

82 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:52 pm

LOVE the new Foster's commercial by the way. OY!

83 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:52 pm

[81] He hit .340 that year,. didn't he?

84 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:53 pm

[82] Are a lot of Australians Jewish?

85 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:55 pm

[83] He did indeed - of course, he only walked 9 times, so his OBP was only .352. He did have a big hit against Texas though, didn't he?

86 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:56 pm

[54] I think Girardi is a great manager. Sometime during the off-season I might even be willing to debate that. But honestly, it's become a meme around here that his decisions are bad and most of that criticism is, in my opinion, subjective.

87 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:57 pm

almost...

88 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:57 pm

That feels like a big play

89 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:58 pm

[84] I use it in the the Irish-Scottsh-Australian context as opposed to the Jewish context. Like the commercial.

90 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:58 pm

[86] I think if he occasionally ran the pinch runners he put it, I'd feel much different.

I'm fickle.

91 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:58 pm

[86] I'd be happy to listen to your views on the subject.

92 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:59 pm

Then, you meant 'Oi'.

93 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 4:59 pm

[89] It's just an attention-getter, like 'Yo!'?

94 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:01 pm

Sabathia is huge. He's his own mound.

95 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:02 pm

This is the same Texas Rangers team that brought Sidney Ponson into that clubhouse

96 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:03 pm

The new stolen base strategy might be a good one. With 2 outs, just let them steal, don't throw it away.

97 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:04 pm

Yes!

98 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:04 pm

This seems harder than it should be

99 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:05 pm

did andurs just steal 3rd with 2 outs and hamilton up? dumb

100 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:06 pm

[96] I'm with you. focus on the batter, that's all.

[98] Yeah, but it's 3-0 and (without too much irony) Mo is rested. If CC can muscle through 4 or even 3 more innings, they're gonna be OK today.

103 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:07 pm

BOOM!

104 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:08 pm

I remember that song "Dead rallies aren't much fun ..."

117 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:11 pm

Btw, this center field camera view on the iphone is hilarious. because it follows the hitter, never the ball or anyone else. So I'm basically watching swisher run fast and thinking that must not be a homerun or he'd be jogging...

118 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:11 pm

[114] Exactly. It's like trying to calculate Pi or contemplate infinity, or locate Gardner's position and velocity at the same time.

119 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:12 pm

This. This is what we needed to see, the bats coming alive!

127 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:19 pm

[125] Could be. I'm no expert. It's only the day after.

128 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:19 pm

[125] Or just rest, anyway.

129 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:22 pm

I swear I thought this before the Yanks started scoring, but this is kind of fun. I gnashed my teeth and all that up to game time but now I feel loose. Once you stare into the abyss of elimination in theory, the actual thing in the game seems a lot less dire.

I mean I'd be singing a different tune if they were getting blown out I guess but I liked the back-against-the-wall feeling when the game got underway.

It just seems like everything's gravy now, cause I already went through the grieving process, so to speak.

130 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:22 pm

I'm trying to put this tactfully.

If I worked for central casting and was asked to find a 30 year old drug addict, I'd come back with Josh Hamilton. He just has that "look"

131 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:23 pm

143 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:26 pm

[137] Lance Berkman just took a pratfall. I don't want to use that ter, because it wasn't funny, (well, maybe a little) but I really think thats the best description

144 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:26 pm

[141] Berkman went after a foul ball popup and his legs went out from under him like he hit ice. It was kind of rough.

145 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:26 pm

[130] Wow, really?

The Reds and Rangers beat writers said they thought he looked like a central casting baseball player. Like an ideal ball player. They went on about it so much I kinda wondered about their sexual orientation.

146 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:26 pm

Berkman slipped in a very odd way trying to catch a foul ball. Wiped out.

147 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:26 pm

Berkman but seems to be ok now

148 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:27 pm

Lance just banged the back of his head while trying to grab a foul pop. He slipped on the rubbery dirt out there. He's still out there, but head injuries have a funny way of getting worse as time goes by.

149 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:27 pm

ugh, well my immediate concern was that it was cc or cano. so i'll take it.

150 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:27 pm

There's your Teixeira sighting.

151 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:27 pm

[140] Then you must have missed the Phils fan who leaned over the 3rd base side rail for a foul ball last week and puked on the field.

152 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:28 pm

[143] I think the three terms for types of falls used in stunts are "pratfall," "108" and "stiffback," and Berkman's would qualify as a prattfall. IIRC.

153 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:29 pm

[151] Weeeelllll..... yeah, there's that too!

Odd they were just talking about their shoes, and all of the sudden Lance's rubber cleats become a story.

154 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:29 pm

isn't there a way to stream radio free online? when i try to stream 880 it isn't playing the game.

155 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:30 pm

[153] Shouldn't use lance and rubber in the same sentence.

156 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:30 pm

[154] I think there are subsidiary radio stations in the Yankee network that somehow avoid the restrictions and stream the game. Google around and maybe you can find one.

157 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:32 pm

[156] but what am i listening to when i stream 880? it's definitely local news and weather. where is john?

Lance Berkman was just hoping that Francoeur got out in a hurry. There's a joke to be made there

159 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:33 pm

Is playing 1st base for the Yankees like This is Spinal Tap, where the drummers spontaneously combust?

160 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:33 pm

[157] They keep the news going on 880 even when there is a game. It runs online, and comes back on the air in the event of a rain delay or something like that.

161 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:33 pm

Atta boy, Jorge!

162 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:34 pm

[145] Its something about his eyes and mouth. I can't verbalize it, but I really, really see it

163 jimcobain   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:34 pm

Methinks Ron Washington is losing a battle here to win the you-know-what. Glad he is showing no interest in stepping on any throats.

164 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:34 pm

hip hip Jorge!!!!

165 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:34 pm

More runs, please.

No mercy!

[159] Ha ha ha

167 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:35 pm

YANKEES bats are coming alive now, VERY good sign.

168 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:40 pm

[145] Hmmm. Maybe you're right.

169 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:40 pm

Gotta score enough runs so Kerry Wood can't blow it.

170 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:42 pm

I really wanted that run sitting there on third.

171 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:45 pm

Uh Oh

172 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:45 pm

MERDE, overslept. Quick recap anyone?
I called a CC shutdown yesterday, btw! Go Go Yankees!

173 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:46 pm

What was up with Berkman's slide? He wasn't going that fast and he slid like 10 feet, half of it on his back!

174 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:46 pm

[172] clearly you need to go bcak to sleep.

175 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:47 pm

[169] If all goes well here, Wood won't even have the chance to enter the game.

176 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:47 pm

[172] Swish and Cano went back to back for the last 2 Yankee runs.

177 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:47 pm

[175] That'd be nice.

178 seamus   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:48 pm

[172] oh, and HEY TOKYO!!!

179 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:48 pm

Yet another FUCKING 2 strike hit, grrrrr.

184 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:49 pm

That was a swing?

188 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:50 pm

That was big check swing call.

189 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:50 pm

I guess it was

190 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:51 pm

192 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:53 pm

This is real bad

193 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:54 pm

@$@#$#@$@$#@$@#. Lay out swish. One damn swing and it's f-bomb time.

194 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 5:54 pm

Uh, boy. Swish was kind of lucky it didn't get past him.

Awesome!

Either way, CC ESCAPED!!

44 balls, 46 strikes? That's terrible.

221 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:06 pm

You see, fuckwad, that's when a real broadcaster tacks on, "Yanks leading 6-1.")

257 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:25 pm

[251] Easy there pardner! It's not a tragedy just yet! Geez.

258 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:25 pm

I don't like this at all.

259 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:25 pm

OK, ok, ok. One more out.

260 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:26 pm

Why couldn't Alex reach out for that runner???

261 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:26 pm

Professor, I take it back...I think we're getting a Wood sighting tonight. Let's pray it's good Kerry.

262 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:26 pm

I wonder why Sabathia doesn't "have it"

263 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:26 pm

Why was the runner not out of the basepath going to third?

264 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:26 pm

[257] *nodding. skeptically, but nodding all the same*

265 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:27 pm

[261] Sigh. I hope so.

266 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:28 pm

[263] Maybe if Alex got his head in the game and tried to tag him that call would have been made?

267 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:28 pm

Fuck blue, how many goddamn strikes are you not going to call!?!?!?!?

268 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:29 pm

Probably Sabathia's last hitter.

269 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:30 pm

Looked like he could have made the play at home but what do I know.

270 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:30 pm

Great pitch!

271 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

Oh my fucking God.

I didn't need that

272 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

Hi all. I'm sorry to be missing the Banter.

YES! FINALLY HE GOT A FUCKING CALL.

Jesus the balls/strikes calls were pissing me off.

273 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

Really broke over.

274 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

That was in the strike zone, but I can't believe the umpire gave it to him, the way Jorgie's glove moved. Pitch was nowhere near where it was supposed to be.

Huge sigh of relief.

275 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

[269] Don't think so, but he could have tagged the runner.

276 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

Yes TBS that was a strike.

277 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:31 pm

I'm real worried that Joe is going to try to mix and match through the seventh. We need like a three spot.

278 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:32 pm

CC escapes. Phew.

279 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:32 pm

Oops I didn't realize I was behind! Haha

280 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:33 pm

[277] Fortunately he's only got one lefty.

281 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:33 pm

[277] Let's just hope Wood lasts a long time.
(Although if it's more than 6 hours, consult your doctor.)

282 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:33 pm

We as fans seem to now fear Texas as if each and every one of them were Cliff Lee. Like in the Matrix Reloaded.

283 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:34 pm

[282] Everything that possibly could have gone wrong has.

284 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:34 pm

TBS does a fantastic job of showing you where the called strike was before going to commercial. With Fox, you may or may not ever see the pitch again.

285 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:34 pm

Damn, now Mattpat has me worried. I was thinking the bullpen management was really obvious for the rest of this one, but fuck. What if Girardi decides he's going to make some cool moves to make everyone forget about the bizarre decisions he's made so far?

286 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:35 pm

i'd go to wood and if he really fucks up straight to mo

287 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:35 pm

Does Texas really have four lefties in their bullpen? Now we know who we can dump Marte on.

288 mjpucci   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:36 pm

Another run or five would really help. My blood pressure, if nothing else.

289 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:36 pm

[285] I think he'll go Robertson 7th, Wood 8th, Rivera 9th.

290 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:36 pm

Howzabout they score a lead off fucking double this time.
That's my man, Curtis!

Gotta get Grandy home.

293 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:36 pm

[289] i think both Logan and Chamberlain get in as well.

294 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:37 pm

He can't bunt! Let him swing!

295 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:37 pm

297 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:37 pm

298 Emma Span   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:38 pm

Just got out of an appointment and found a bar with the game on. Thank you, C.C.!

299 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:38 pm

Come Jetes. Get him in somehow.

300 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:38 pm

Do you think Gardner will ever figure out the things that are keeping him from becoming a very good player? Or is who he is? I mean, he's pretty close to being a very good player, but he watches fat pitches a bit much and he can't bunt when he really needs to be able to with his wheels.

305 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:40 pm

[302] So who pitches the 7th?

306 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:40 pm

[300] He also takes FOR-EVER to get a read on a pitcher.

307 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:40 pm

[302] Joba?

308 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:40 pm

[306] Yes, I knew there was something else!

309 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:40 pm

[300] Actually, I like the way he "watches fat pitches". He's not a great hitter, but his OBP is excellent. And yeah, I think this is who he is. He's not a kid, after all.

310 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:41 pm

Gardner does grind out bats and tires out pitchers. His bunting is not strong.

311 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:41 pm

[284] Agreed. If the Yanks lose this series, one perk will be not watching the Fox Broadcast with a dog in the fight.

I won't much at all if it's Phillies/Rangers. I would LOVE Yanks / Giants. But that's a long shot.

312 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:41 pm

[307] Please no Joba.

313 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:41 pm

Ugh. If I were calling the shots, Kerry W would pitch the seventh. He could be strong and efficient and start the eighth. And Mo for four outs if nec.

314 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:42 pm

[309] Last year he swung at significantly less than half of the pitches in the zone. I don't know what the percentage is this year, but that's just not good.

315 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:43 pm

[311] If Cliff Lee beats the Phillies in the WS, will Reuban Amaro get run out of town? Or tarred and feathered.

316 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:43 pm

Gardner coud be excellent. He gets on base, which is good. He is less of a baserunner than he should be, with his speed, which is unfortunate. Ditto the bunting. That one just now was miraculous and still sucked

317 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:43 pm

[314] Yeah, but in Brett's case I think that's good. If he only swings at the pitches right in his hot spot, he can be a decent hitter.

318 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:43 pm

[315] Good question. Maybe I will watch after all

319 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:43 pm

329 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:47 pm

Well, that was worst case scenario.

Please don't fuck this up Joe. PLEASE

330 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:47 pm

Why didn't Jeter steal?
Fuck.
(I know, I don't like "plays", but WTF?)

331 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:47 pm

fucking horseshit. Lead off doubles are poison.

332 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:48 pm

[330] We don't do plays.

333 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:48 pm

[331] Doubles are worse rally killers than homers!

334 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:48 pm

They are poison for this team, not most teams.

335 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:48 pm

[332] And in general I'm glad.
I wonder if Cashman texted Girardi, "No plays, Joe."

336 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:49 pm

COULD THEY JUST PLAY A GAME AND NOT PISS ME OFF???

337 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:49 pm

[331] Quote of the day thus far

338 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:49 pm

[336] I doubt it.

339 The Hawk   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:49 pm

That was poor

340 wcyankee   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:50 pm

I never thought with this score at this point of the game I'd still have the urge to fucking hurl.

341 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:51 pm

The Rangers have blown more chances than the Yankees today, but not by much.

342 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:51 pm

Kerry!
All is forgiven, Joe!

343 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:51 pm

The Rangers are chock full of punks. I don't like punks.

344 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:51 pm

I see Thames getting a big knock soon.

345 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:52 pm

[341] A couple of runs worth, anyway.

346 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Does Andrus ever not get on base?

347 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Hoo boy.

OK. Four run lead. Ignore the runner. Focus on the batter. FOCUS.

348 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Ohfercrisake.

349 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Yup. I am so sick of that fucking kid.

350 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Apparently Wood also doesn't make plays.

351 wcyankee   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:53 pm

Fuck Kerry, don't barehand that shit!

352 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

[346] Only when he bats immediately after the #9 guy hits a HR, I think.

353 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

[335] There are so many ways to get a runner home from 3rd. The Yanks refuse to try most of them and seem to be unable to do any of them.

354 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

[351] Especially with your pitching hand.

355 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

[347] But you have to focus on the runner. If he steals second then Joe will start intentionally walking guys.

356 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

FORGET ABOUT THE RUNNER.

357 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:54 pm

These Rangers are apparently not bailing out on any ABs.

358 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:55 pm

[355] Damn. Another conundrum.

359 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:55 pm

Nice..Posada tagged the batter with two strikes.

360 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:56 pm

Posada just tagged the batter. He is losing it.

361 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:56 pm

[356] I figure that's not exactly what you meant, but maybe I'm wrong.

362 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:56 pm

Must have a different catcher next year.

363 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:56 pm

Well, that's one way to eliminate the steal.

364 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:56 pm

I bet Posada got his name wrong on the SAT.

365 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:57 pm

[362] ?

366 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:57 pm

Gotta trade for the Texas backstop next year.

367 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:58 pm

Elvis on base. Stupid Young with a 15 pitch ab. It's a horror movie. Same thing over and over and over again.

368 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:58 pm

[364] Lay off my man. He's going to the Hall of Fame.

369 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:58 pm

Obviously Posada came out to the mound and said: "throw a fastball past him."

370 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:58 pm

Good work, Kerr.
But he's working too hard to pitch the 8th, I figure.

371 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

IGNORE THE RUNNER (now at 2B).

372 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

Oh, wow!

373 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

Oh, sweet.

374 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

Wazoo!

375 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

Hah!

376 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 6:59 pm

Was that a play?

377 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

IGNORE MONKEYPANTS' SUGGESTIONS.

378 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

that's the best thing that's happened in hours

379 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

Finally they got to that guy's running game! Yeah!

380 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

[371] :)

381 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

[371] HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

382 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

[369] Might have. That's probably about the level of mound discussion.

383 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

[369] "and if I drop the 3rd strike, don't be surprised if I throw it to third."
Nice pick off.

384 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

Monkeypants has now locked up the Comment of the Game award. Everyone can relax.

385 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:00 pm

It was a play. I swear.

386 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:01 pm

[384] Agreed. Now we can all go home.

387 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:01 pm

[384] I couldn't do it without my fans, the public....

388 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:01 pm

[385] The smell of greasepaint! The roar of the crowd!

389 wcyankee   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:03 pm

Fuck YES!

390 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:03 pm

6 more. WHoo-hoo.

391 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:03 pm

Okay.
So, is there any way he can start the 8th? I'd let him, but there might be a good reason not to that I'm ignorant of.

392 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:03 pm

Siddown, Hammer.

393 yankintexas   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:04 pm

I bet Girardi will wait until there is 1 out and then bring Mo.

394 51cq24   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:04 pm

[391] mo hasn't pitched since friday and has an off day tomorrow?

but a 4 run lead may not necessitate using him in the 8th.

395 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:04 pm

[365] At least to start splitting the duties. Montero? Anyone? He's a defensive minus anymore.

396 joe   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:05 pm

Does Wood have two pick offs in this series?

397 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:06 pm

[395] Dude! Where are you from? I haven't heard anyone use "anymore" like that since my college roommate!

398 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:06 pm

[395] He's been a defensive minus for a while, but his offense still outweighs that. Plus, I am not sure what he did that inning to inspire the comment. Wood's WP was completely uncatchable.

399 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:07 pm

[396] Yes he does. Game one he got Kinsler.

400 JeremyM   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:07 pm

[398] Maybe the tag on the batter with only two strikes pissed him off?

Show/Hide Comments 401-466
401 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:08 pm

There's no freaking need to bring in Mo with 2 outs and and no one on. So I'm hoping for a 1,2.3. obviously. But that ain't happening.

402 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:08 pm

[395] Yes, it's time for Posada to move to a backup/Dh role and help break in someone new.

403 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:08 pm

[394] This season Mo had three 2.0 INN appearances and two 1.1 INN appearances. That's for the whole year. If the game is not on the line, I highly doubt that Girardi uses him for more than 3 or 4 outs.

404 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:09 pm

[403] Right. But he'll pitch the ninth no matter what the lead is, just for the work.

405 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:10 pm

[402] You give away 100 points of OPS. Probably more. Your guy had better be an amazing catcher.

406 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:10 pm

[404] definitely.

407 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:11 pm

Girardi looks like he's been sedated. (Gotta help our chances.)

408 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:12 pm

[405] No, I'm hoping one of the great minor league hitters is ready to come up and start breaking in. No way Posada should be backup to some Cervelli type.

409 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:12 pm

[405] You and I have always agreed on this. The folks who complain (sometimes frequently) about replacing Jorge don't realize how much they are going to miss that production from the position...no matter how unsightly his catching "style" may be.

410 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:12 pm

[407] wow - that would be a BRILLIANT idea! Maybe Cashman got him with some sort of dart gun.

411 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:12 pm

I wish Darling or Johnson would tell us who's warming up in the Yankee bulllpen.

412 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:13 pm

How is Romine developing? He's in Double A, no? Assuming Montero isn't ready (or never will be).

413 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:13 pm

Too bad Montero was injured. Would have been interesting to see him get a cup of coffee in September.

414 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:13 pm

[407] I had visions of Cashman, hiding in the shadows, shooting Girardi with a tranquilizer dart gun.

415 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:13 pm

[409] Absolutely. He's a Hall of Famer, and one of the reasons the Yankees have been so good so long for the last 12-13 years.

416 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:14 pm

[408] Romine can't be expected to hit better than Cervelli, at least at first. Montero will be a worse catcher than Posada. So [409] yeah.

417 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:15 pm

[413] Injured or not, I have a feeling he was never going to be called up in September. For one, he wasn't on the 40-man roster, was he?

418 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:15 pm

[416] Romine no better than Cervelli? That's pretty bad.

419 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:16 pm

[410] [414] Great (or twisted) minds...

420 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:16 pm

I thought Romine was highly touted and gaining ground. Moot if he can't hit.

421 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:22 pm

[412] Romine and Montero sort of switched places over the year. At first, Montero struggled to adjust to AAA, and Romine was doing great in AA. Scouts were saying the Yanks should trade Montero and anoint Romine Posada's heir.

But then Romine fell into a horrible slump, and Montero started raking. By the end of the season, Montero had pulled ahead. But he didn't get called up because he was injured at the end of the AAA season.

I've heard criticism of Montero's defense, but he looks okay to me. (I'm in upstate NY, and see more AAA games than big league games.). He's got a strong arm. At least compared to Chad Moeller.

422 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:22 pm

[420] I think eventually he'll be a decent hitter, but I just don't think he's ready for the bigs yet.

423 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:23 pm

[418] Not yet. He's still super young after his first full year at AA. Let's not rush Romine to the big leagues.

424 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:24 pm

[423] OK, one more year of 100 games for Posada.

425 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:25 pm

5 MORE OUTS....whadda'd I miss?

426 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:25 pm

[421] I've had a hunch that Montero's defensive deficiencies have been greatly exaggerated. If he hits like they say he'll hit, he'll start behind the plate...at least for a few years.

427 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:26 pm

[425] Lots of aggravation.

428 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:26 pm

Kerry looking good.

429 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:26 pm

I love Kerry Wood.

430 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:27 pm

Kerry is doing just fine.

431 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:28 pm

Hip's better. YAY WOOD!

432 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:28 pm

Finally a play! A-Rod no less.

433 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:28 pm

Wood really has been a nice pickup. Score one for Cashman.

434 randym77   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:28 pm

[417] Montero isn't on the 40-man, but I believe he has to be added this year to protect him from Rule 5. So the roster repercussions are minor.

435 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:29 pm

[428] Wood picked Andrus off second.

436 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:31 pm

[434] Right, but I doubt they were going to start his options clock this year for a september callup. He'll start next season in AAA on the 40-man roster and make an appearance in the bigs in the middle of the season (if there is an injury to a starter) or as a September call-up. Then he will start somewhere in the bigs in 2012. That's my guess.

437 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:35 pm

You the man, Curtis! Rock those Pinstripes.

438 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:36 pm

Something sort of kinda good!

439 monkeypants   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:36 pm

Yay!

Heading back to Texas...

440 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:36 pm

Sweet.

441 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:38 pm

Yeah, I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass...
I used to be your stallion but that's all in the past
So face the tail on my nose and point me towards the grass
'Cause I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass.

442 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:38 pm

Yeah, I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass.
I used to be your stallion but that's all in the past
So face the tail on my nose and point me towards the grass
'Cause I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass.

443 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:39 pm

Oops, sorry for the double post.

444 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:45 pm

Gamecast has the Yanks with a 99% chance of winning.

445 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:46 pm

This is a very relaxing feeling.

446 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:47 pm

[444] Gamecast doesn't know about Mo.

447 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:47 pm

Here it is, punk. Hit it.

448 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:49 pm

Next.

449 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:49 pm

Not even gonna break 500 comments.

450 Yankee Mama   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:52 pm

Better game, fewer comments.

451 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:52 pm

I think the starting time was (part of) the difference.

452 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:53 pm

That's just not right. So unaesthetic.

453 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:53 pm

[451] For sure. I wonder if we have some Banterers at the game, too...

454 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:54 pm

The random strike zone is fucking with my calmness.

455 Just Fair   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:55 pm

All RIse.
Just what the doctor ordered.

456 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:55 pm

Thanks be to Mo.

457 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:55 pm

Alright boys. One game at a time.

458 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:55 pm

Yup. Still a long shot, but two games is a lot easier than three games.

459 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:56 pm

Escape from New York.

460 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 20, 2010 7:57 pm

Take it easy, everyone.

461 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 20, 2010 8:21 pm

Hey all - sorry I couldn't join in here, had to watch the kids while my wife is out.

Next up - Friday night.

Praise be to Mo.

462 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 20, 2010 8:28 pm

Well, as I feared, going to my lucky bar did the trick.

I'll be back there for the start of Friday night's game.

A win is a win and we need wins right now, but it would be nice if this team could simply have a well-played game on both sides of the ball and win one easily.

463 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 8:39 pm

The Rob-Curtis interview is amazing. One guy who was born to be in front of a mike, in front of a camera, and the other guy is borderline incomprehensible, but you just have to love both of them.

464 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 8:44 pm

[397] Jersey. Transplanted to Japan 20 years ago.

465 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 20, 2010 8:47 pm

Sorry for starting and then dropping out of the Posada discussion. My wife wanted to use the computer, so I listened to the end on radio.

466 RIYank   ~  Oct 20, 2010 9:28 pm

[464] My roommate was also from Jersey! I'm pretty sure it was Jersey City. Yeah. And his family used to live in Avon-by-the-Sea.

So, that's a Jersey thing, anymore. Who knew?
