I love that Jeter wins every year because I love that it pisses people off.

Its the frigging Gold Glove. Its like getting bent out of shape over the manager of the year.

However, congrats to Cano on his well deserved 1st and Teixeira on his 4th.

I also think I'd be more appalled if we could find defensive metrics that don't have that horrible habit of contradicting all the other defensive metrics.

[2] Me too, exactly. And it's perfect on Fire Joe Morgan Day.

I don't watch other SS enough to have a strong opinion, but the complex defensive metrics seem unreliable when you look at their variability across a season.

When everyone makes jokes about Jeter's defense, why does he get no credit for the lack errors (and the high field percentage)? Do we think this stat is basically the equivalent of a non-starter win? Just the scorer's discretion? Why does carry so well across all the parks (and scorers)?

Jeter played about as many innings as everyone else but had 1/3 the average number of errors 7 versus 20. Why doesn't that at least stifle the chuckle response?

Baseball reference has a nice digest for defensive metrics by position:

In Jeter's case, the other 40% is "intangibles"
