Drip Drop Drip Drop

Steady rain all day, with more scheduled for tonight. Will they get the game in? Hmmm. If they don’t, feel free to use this as an open thread.

forecast stinks for most of the week.
hopefully they can get these games in somehow rather than have another rainout.
wonder if maybe they stuck with the 6 man rotation in small part because of all this damn rain.

2 Sliced Bread   ~  Sep 6, 2011 4:18 pm

[1] yeah, could be a bunch of double headers coming up this month. But I think the extended rotation has more to do with preserving arms and other creaky bodyparts, and figuring out what they have for the playoffs. It's hard to say who should be in the postseason rotation beyond CC and Ivan at this point.

3 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2011 4:30 pm

I'm not holding out hope for the game.

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 6:27 pm

Still raining, but stilld dreaming they'll play.

Pants Lendleton was DFA'd today ...

5 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 6, 2011 7:14 pm

In a rain delay.

6 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 7:53 pm

Well, at least there's Steve Strasburg's season debut to keep up entertained while we wait ...

7 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:07 pm

From LoHud:

Update, 7:50: Still waiting. By the way, according to weather.com, there’s a window between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. where there’s just a 15-20 percent chance of rain. Seriously. Then it goes back up to 100 percent. There’s a varying chance of rain throughout the day and night tomorrow.

8 rbj   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:09 pm

[7] Saw that. What a joke, only two hours? Might as well send everyone home fora good night's rest and play two tomorrow. Got a bunch of the SWB gang up.

9 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:16 pm

[8] I'm not sure they're even going to be able to get a game in tomorrow.

Looking at the forecast, chance of rain doesn't drop below 50% until 4pm tomorrow, then goes back over 50% after 8pm for the rest of the night.

Plus, the Yankees have a day game they have to get to in Baltimore on Thursday.

If there's any chance they can get this game in, they're better off trying to ...

10 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:19 pm

And it's damn chilly out there too.

11 Marek   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:25 pm

[6] He's dealing. He might even qualify for the win with his 60 pitch limit!

12 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:29 pm

[11] Yeah, a 90 mph "change up" is just silly!

Texas doing us a favor and taking care of Tampa Bay so far ...

13 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:33 pm

shit sox have scored in every goddamn inning and already lead 10-0. i get the feeling they're not done scoring...

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:35 pm

Still in delay?
[13] All or nothing "O" for the Sawx. That won't do in the playoffs!

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:41 pm

[14] Yup, not even a projected start time ...

16 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:43 pm

Strasburg has a shut out through five...

17 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 8:51 pm

strasburg - final line: 5 innings, 56 pitches, 4K, 0 BB, 2 hits.

doug slaten has taken over...

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:00 pm

So much for Slaten ...

19 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:00 pm

20 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:01 pm

21 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:09 pm

22 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:29 pm

[21] thelarmis, with no game today I'm finally going to get in touch with you offline about your cd!

23 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:39 pm

We hung at Yankee Tavern till 8, now back on the couch with a beer and Flipping Out on Bravo...well, at least the chicken fingers were good.

24 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:47 pm

25 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:50 pm

[24] huh. really? i just tried it and it worked. sent myself an email! how bout just trying to type out that email addy? see if that works... (sorry it's a hassle...)

26 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:50 pm

27 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 9:57 pm

What if they held a game thread and the game never showed up?

31 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 10:18 pm

[29] Ah yes..Hendrix was just beautiful.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 10:37 pm

[32] Indeed, there is Hendrix ... and then there is everyone else.

Meanwhile, crew is about to pull the tarp.

33 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 10:46 pm

[32] They're really going to play? Looks like a lonely late-nite game thread with me, you and maybe thelarmis..Boatzilla too if he's not "working"! :)

34 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 10:48 pm

1st pitch about 11.

i hope to check in from time to time...

35 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:00 pm

Yay Baseball!

36 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:03 pm

Does it *really* matter whether or not Hughes gives up his six runs now or four hours ago?

37 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:14 pm

[24] Eh? thelarmis has a website? Can I get some info on that please?

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:17 pm

Awwwww ... yeah, 8pm baseball, baby!

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:19 pm

Wow, if this is the "dry" portion of the evening, it's going to be a looooooooooong night.

40 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:22 pm

Bah, I'm going to bed.

41 T.H. Awk   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:24 pm

I gotta go to bed soon but I just wanted to give Hughes some internet comment-mojo. He needs all the help he can get!

42 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:27 pm

[37] i came thisclose to getting the domain: "buymyfuckingcd.com"! : )

amazingly, it wasn't taken.

i'll link it here soon, Chyll. sleep well, my friend!

GO YANKS!!!

43 Marek   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:27 pm

Wow, they're actually playing.

44 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:32 pm

[41] Are you the commenter formerly know as The Hawk?

45 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:38 pm

[44] i was wondering the same thing!

46 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:40 pm

Blech.

C'mon Phil.

47 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:43 pm

If I cared all that much about Brackman, I'd make a comment about the Yankees phenomenally ability to turn starting prospects into relievers.

48 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:44 pm

Why would you take a pitch right down the middle in a game that started at 11pm local time?

49 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:45 pm

Nice play Robbie

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:46 pm

[47] Eh. Most people had him likely ending up as a reliever anyway, given his rawness, stuff and injury concerns coming out of college.

But, keep plucking that chicken ...

51 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:49 pm

Hip Hip!!

JORGE!!!

52 thelarmis   ~  Sep 6, 2011 11:52 pm

Damn.

55 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:01 am

I've always loved watching Vlad at the plate. Is he a HOFer?

56 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:02 am

[55] For me he is.

57 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:10 am

[56] Injuries (thank you Olympic Stadium, Montreal) really made his career tail off..but I think he gets in. He and Sheffield two of the "most feared" hitters of my lifetime for sure.

58 Start Spreading the News   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:11 am

Any other bantered at the game? I am sitting behind third behind the moat.

59 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:16 am

Meh. Midnight game call right there.

60 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:17 am

I'm impressed, there are WHOLE sections of the stadium with NOBODY in them.

61 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:20 am

[58]Photo evidence, please! :)
[60] Regulars sure to come out soon? Nunez, Jesus, Dickerson, et al in for sure..?

62 thelarmis   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:20 am

the year vlad was thisclose to 40-40, i remember seeing a (Sept.) game where the ump ruled a homerun a double. it was clearly a homerun. i was livid. he finished with 39 homers...and 40 stolen bases.

it was 2002. same year Sori finished with 39 homers...and 41 stolen bases.

63 Start Spreading the News   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:20 am

The sections are empty because yanks let fans move down

64 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:21 am

I've got this feeling that this game has about exactly 3 outs to go ...

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:29 am

Well, seems like they're going to keep trying, but seriously, just call the game and get ready for tomorrow ...

66 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:31 am

This is getting to be a joke.

I mean, I'd love the die-hards who are at the game to get a chance to see 9 innings, but these conditions are just ASKING for someone to get injured.

67 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:31 am

Official Game. Buck doesn't like being the patsy for MLB.

Funny that I'm located about 10 miles from Yankee Stadium as the crow flies, and it's not raining here.

You folks are hard core. It's time for me to listen on the clock radio in the "sleep" mode.

Good night.

68 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:34 am

This weather isn't fit for a soccer match ...

69 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:34 am

[67] G'nite Ken. But we ain't so hardcore.. thelarmis wakes up at 2pm EST and is only now getting into his studio.. cult of basebaal is watching the palm trees sway at 10pm outside Hotel California, drink in hand..and I'm counting down the time till Guinness O'Clock here at ACME, INC, Tokyo branch.

70 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:34 am

I'm sticking with this till the end, its a matter of principle at this point.

71 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:36 am

and if Buck is really the only person keeping this game alive he can seriously go fuck himself, and it is so in keeping with the kind of massive tool this guy has been for his entire managerial career.

Remember this is the same guy who used to hold Spring Training meetings on the proper way to wear a sanitary sock and once started a public feud with Ken Griffey, Jr. over his hat being backwards. Fuck this guy.

72 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:39 am

[71] Totally agree, there's a reason he's been run out of every managerial job he's had.

73 Shaun P.   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:40 am

I can't believe they started this game, and I can't believe they haven't called it yet. Though if its Showalter [71], I'm not surprised.

I also can't believe I'm still awake, but I have to go to bed soon or I'll be useless tomorrow.

What do you late nighters think - if they get through the 5th inning, will the umps call it then?

74 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:40 am

Chavey hit that one hard, but the ball ain't gonna carry extra on a night like tonite ...

75 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:41 am

[73] Seems like the rain's tailed off again.

I assume they keep playing until and if they hit a major potential delay ...

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:44 am

It's been a while since I've seen a field so drenched. There's really NO reason to still be playing this game.

77 joe   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:44 am

This is some good baseball

78 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:45 am

this is so disrespectful to Flanny right now

79 Start Spreading the News   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:46 am

That cervelli hit was a homerun but the wind knocked it back onto the field. That's why the left fielder dropped it. He had no idea what the ball was doing.

80 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:46 am

This is fucking nuts. That fly ball could have resulted in 2 injured players. The umps need to Fuck Buck... and call this game NOW!

81 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:46 am

alright, late night confessions time guys:

I prefer the Rebecca years to the Diane years on Cheers

82 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:48 am

Jorge is reallty working to make the PS roster.

83 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:50 am

Given the delays, I'd have already pulled Phil at this point ...

84 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:52 am

Bleh.

Phil's fastball has dropped below 90.

Don't know whether this is a matter of conditioning, but if Phil is going to keep dropping 4-5 mph off his fastball from pitch 1 to pitch 100, he's probably not long for the starting rotation in his career ...

85 thelarmis   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:54 am

[81] the real confession would be if you preferred the Reggie years or the Chris years on Becker. ; )

86 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:56 am

[69] Doesn't Guinness O'clock start at about 2:30 in your office Jazz?

87 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:56 am

[85] I prefer the Reggie (Jackson) AND Chris (Chambliss) years!

88 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:57 am

Oh, look, someone left Phil Hughes in too long.

Imagine that.

89 thelarmis   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:57 am

fuck and shit.

90 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 7, 2011 12:57 am

[86] Hey, but we get crackin here at 8am while you're still in your jammy-jams :)

I don't get the Buck thing about the rain-out, if umps call it they call it, right?

93 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:03 am

[92] Kirstie Alley vs Kathleen Turner ... who went from the hottest to the nottest more???

94 Shaun P.   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:04 am

[81] Me too. I think everyone was funnier during the Rebecca years.

This sucks. As much as I'd like to wait this out, I've got to get some sleep. G'night, all - and hope no one gets injured!

95 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:05 am

Well, *I'd* have called that strike 3 ...

96 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:05 am

128 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:37 am

129 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:38 am

[123] Yes and that's what makes it worse.

130 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:39 am

Wow another tater for Cervelli! I hope he runs past the O's dugout and moons Buck Bongwater for a full minute!

131 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:39 am

Jorge remains the world's worst baserunner.

Somehow, Frankie Brains *ought* to have hit 2!!! homeruns tonight, if not for the weather conditions.

That might be the craziest thing about this evening's game ...

132 joe   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:40 am

[126] If you are watching on gameday, it's not telling the whole story. Ball was thrown away into foul territory, Posada thought about 2B and turned towards second (in foul territory), but thought better of it. Anyway, they tagged him while he ambled back to first for the "out"

133 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 1:43 am

I have to say, I really am impressed they're going to get this whole game in.

Never would have guessed it.

150 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:02 am

NOW that's a strike?

That's a worse pitch than the pitch to Granderson that was called ball 4, back when.

Robot. Umpire. Overlords.

151 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:11 am

Well, balls, that's a lousy beginning.

152 thelarmis   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:12 am

now, 1 more quick out please!

154 rbs   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:17 am

Yay, Mo!

I can't offing believe this. It's been raining like crazy for the past hour and a half or more, and Mo is out there getting a save?

Whoever decided to play the past 4 innings should be taken out behind the Stadium and drowned.

155 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:17 am

Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Yankees WIN!

156 thelarmis   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:17 am

157 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:18 am

Well, see y'all early in the morning!

Hopefully there will be sunshine ... or at least no rain!

158 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 2:22 am

JoeyJoeJoe has a lot of 'splainin to do..why were all the regulars out there? Why Mo? Why not pressure the umps to call it earlier? Very odd..

159 Start Spreading the News   ~  Sep 7, 2011 3:31 am

Finally got home. Just really puzzled by a few things:
1. WTF was Joe Girardi thinking that Hector Noesi who is supposedly a starter can't get lefties out??? Seriously, bringing in Logan was really that important??? At least I was close enough to the action that I think Girardi heard me yell "Over-managing"

2. How is Jorge so dense? He is a catcher. In theory, catchers are really supposed to know the game and yet Jorge manages to consistently do knuckle-headed things.

3. Did we really need to see Robertson and Rivera pitch today??? Lohud quoted Girardi as saying that Robertson was unavailable today and yet he pitched.

4. Why wasn't the game called after 5 innings? They stopped the game after the top of the 4th and I was half headed towards the exit. I stopped when I saw them bringing dirt out while the umps huddled. The game was getting slippery and I was waiting for Cano or Granderson to get hurt and kill the season.

5. Yankees really don't appreciate their fans very much. They give away a free ticket to anyone with tonight's ticket. That's to assuage the fans who didn't show up today. What about rewarding the ones that showed up? Instead we were told by stadium security that we couldn't move up at first. Finally the Yanks relented near the end of the 1st inning. And God forbid that a 4 hour wait would be enough to let fans sit in the "Legends seats." All the while, the Yanks continued to sell $4 hot chocolates and $5 water at the stadium at 2 in the morning.

6. When did the PC police start working at the Stadium? Security told one fan to "not be so vulgar" or be kicked out. Really??? Vulgarity is an issue now? The fan had been alluding to Baltimore's 3rd base coach Willie Randolph's past endorsement of Subway's sandwiches. She merely said that while he touted the 6inch sub, she suspects he is really a footlong. Explicit no but racy definitely. Apparently enough to get the PC police at the Stadium to silence her. At least the "asshole" chant was still permitted. For now.

[159]
1.The Binder knows all. Trust in the Binder.
2.It's one reason why we love the big lug!
3. Inexplicable.
4. Inexplicable.
5. Just noticing that now? :) Yankees havn't cared about their fans in years. Last time I was at the old Satdium they wouldn't let me in with a backpack because of "security". Told me to go across the street to a bar and pay $5 to store it there during the game. I told them to Fuck Off and went back downtown to watch in a bar. Havn't been back since.
6. Ridiculous. It's ok for them to ram their military-worship down everyone's throats but god forbid someone yells out a mild heckle. (Though why heckle Willie, we love him!)

Well done on sticking it out for the whole game!

[159] & [161] Steinbrenner Family. Nazi-like policies. Coincidence? I think not.

But dude, don't boycott the Stadium. No matter what they do, there ain't nuthin' in the world like a live Yankee game in a full house at the Stadium. Don't deprive that from Jazz Jr. just because of some shit-ass policies.

Hell, in the old days the fans used to exit through the outfield and Mickey nearly got mugged a few times. Got punched in the face more than once. As Travis Bickel said, "This town is a cesspool."

162 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 7, 2011 6:19 am

[161] Whoa, Old Man Steinbrenner (George's dad) was a Nazi supporter? Never heard that before..

I know about the experience, I just hate the fact that fans are treated with such contempt. And that the moat seats get first-class service while us upper-deck rabble do not. You know how incredible the service is here, my 1000 Yen yakitori joint has better service than United Airlines for $1000..

163 Boatzilla   ~  Sep 7, 2011 7:10 am

[162] That was a joke, brother.

Well, just don't let the bastards keep you away. I walk around during the Star Spangled (which my direct ancestor Mr. Key wrote, BTW, so I'll sit or talk or do whatever the fuck I want while it's playing, I talk during the Kat Smith break, if I can't walk around, and I chat up the ushers to get them to loosen up.
