Where & When: Game 12

Welcome back, and sorry for the lateness.  When you end up working for an obsessive-compulsive movie director, you get a good idea of how little time you have for yourself.  But we are back with a new challenge, one that even has me a little uncertain:

Where & When 12

Another commuters’ special; those who drive a lot throughout the city will instantly know where this is, but you might have a little problem pinpointing when it was taken; I know I have.  So for when, I will accept a good guess within a certain range, provided that you explain what led you to your conclusion.  And, as usual, give us a breakdown of your research.  Send your answers to cixposse at gmail dot com and the first person with the right answers will be bestowed a bottle of Bulldog, while subsequent right answers will receive a spritzing of Spring Grove.

I will be busy again, so I don’t know how often I can check in; that said, if I don’t reveal the answer by 6pm, feel free to do so in the comments and I will update you all with the winners.  So have a good run around the loop and we’ll talk later!

Got it. Now to see if I can find the photo and get a more exact date.

Contrary to what you expected, Will, I am pretty confident about the approximate year, but I don't know Where.

I have an idea how to find out, but it might be rather painstaking. Maybe later!

Pretty sure a former Mayor ate lunch just off to the right a few times a week. How am I doin'?

Ugh, finally got it. Was concentrating on the other side of the river for some reason. I'll make a wild guess as to the year.

Well it's 7:30 pm. My guess was underneath the Brooklyn Bridge (the caissons match up) where the FDR intersects with 495. Has to be early 1970s, I put down 1974.

[5] Really??
I guessed 1983. I think the cars are late 70s.

[6] could be. All those years run together anymore.

Yeah guys, I'm stuck on the date with this one. I see cars that are reminiscent of late 70's-early 80's, but the picture didn't really produce enough resolution to tell definitively; either that or the cars were moving faster than the shutter speed could catch in a still moment.

So, we all know the answer is Underneath the Brooklyn Bridge; Manhattan side overlooking the on/off ramps of the FDR. The acceptable range for this was 70s-80s since it's hard enough to tell the difference between the two style-wise. The several answers I received all were within this range, so rbj, you win the Bulldog today. And RIYank, JDM and TheGreenMan can hang out at the Spring Grove.

Also interesting note with this pic, JDM tells us that just off to the right of the pic is the Bridge Cafe; a favorite hangout spot of Hizzoner, the late Mayor Ed Koch, during his term.

This was a bit tough because of the uncertain date; the site that contained this pic (which I can no longer find) also did not include a date. Not my usual style to be so ambiguous, but debate is not unnatural to this game. If you have any evidence or news that would in further identifying this scene, feel free to send me an email.

As always, suggestions and submissions are welcome. I apologize again for the lateness, but it's a busy time in the film/tv biz so it might get a little erratic for the time being. Bear with me and we'll get to calm waters soon enough. Till next time!

[8] Don't worry about the lateness. Employment is always good. And I'm really enjoying this.

Here it is.

It has a hashtag index which I think is the date: 1982.

[10] Nice! I wasn't far off from my own guess. I'm awarding you a root beer as well for that find.
