Million Dollar Movie

download (12)

I groaned when I first saw the trailer for American Hustle. David O. Russell using “Good Times, Bad Times” again–it’s like “Gimmie Shelter” with Scorsese–and all the bad haircuts. The movie didn’t look promising. A Good Fellas knockoff.

It opens today and after reading about it in the New Yorker and the Times I may have to reconsider.

Will do! Looks like it's gonna be ILD since that's playing right by my office.

I don't know if everyone has been following this whole thing, but Deadspin purchased a Hall of Fame ballot from an anonymous voter and they've now opened up voting to the readership. Basically the 10 players with the highest percentage of "YES" votes will be placed on Deadspin's ballot, which will then be submitted by the anonymous BBWAA member.

Putting aside how much this shows what a farce the actual HOF voting is, and it IS, it's still pretty cool.

Interesting piece about Hustle, et al here: http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2013/12/2013-in-review-qed.html

By the way, I saw INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS last weekend and loved it like crazy.

Sorry for the off-topic, but Infante signed a four year deal with the Royals for $40 million. He must have felt insulted by the Yanks' three year $24 million offer. So unless Phillips comes off his desire to immediately embiggen his cashflow, Kelly Johnson is your perfectly cromulent Opening Day shortstop.

Ellsbury and Cano are each wearing #22 for their new teams. Both thanked their, ahem, *respective* ex-fans yesterday; Ellsbury in a newspaper ad, the ex-Yankee, on twitter.
They've been introduced, wearing their new jerseys and caps. They've smiled for the cameras, tried to say the right things, and in the case of Cano, take a parting shot or two. Pop-pop.
This winter's biggest acquisitions in baseball are now officially, and ceremonially complete. Nearly $400 million dollars has been invested in these two players. Marriage, divorce. Sunrise, sunset.
It's been a weird, unsettling week and a half, this in-with-the Ellsbury, and out-with-Cano.
Watching the business-side of baseball has it's intriguing moments, and I've been glued to the transactions, but it's mostly unappealing. The past ten days or so have left me with a strange, unfamiliar blah-ish feeling: like I just ate and drank too much at a party I didn't enjoy.

The business side of all pro sports these days is very draining. I've never been less enthusiastic as a fan than the last few years. It's not even so much about how much money is involved, but the way it's allocated and often wasted (look at the Knicks). It seems the only thing that ever matters is business; it would be something if all involved were thinking more than that, but I lose more interest every time a player or exec says "it's a business, that's the business, that's business"... Eff that.

Lucky for you. -10 near Lake Champlain. Fingers numb as I shot the spouts. Couldn't remove my car keys from my pockets, even with hotties in my gloves (urban people think of hotties as big breasted babes in bars.
Went to see Hunger Games II. No electricity on Shellburn Road, due to the cold. We left after parking. Street lights returned to the area when we were almost home. 30 wasted minutes lost forever. Foot, foot 1/2 tonight.

[0] Wow, who is that in the photo?? Looks like a young Ellen Barkin.

Duuuuude. Where you been? Gotta get out more.

That's Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook). Only the hottest ingenue (although with a serious brain) to come out of Hollywood in some time. She's only been on the cover every men's magazine for like the last 2 years.

Those lips are unmistakable.

[10] The reluctant star? Her breakout performance in Winters Bone was something to behold.

[9] Just realized my post should have tagged as such.

[11] Good point. If he hasn't heard of her, we could describe as anything, but IMHO Ellen Barkin doesn't hold a candle to Ms. Lawrence.

Yes, Oscar nominee for Winters' Bone, as well.

[10] There are still 'men's magazines'?

Havn't seen any of those flicks but based on that picture I may have to 'catch up on current cinema'..
