Derek Jeter plays his last game in the Bronx tonight. It’s the first home game he’s ever played when the Yankees were out of playoff contention.
It’s been raining all day but word is they’ll still play. Our man Hiroki’s on the hill.
Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter SS
Brian McCann C

Chase Headley 3B

Never mind the Kleenex:
Let’s Go Yank-ees!
GO JETER!!! GO YANKS!!!
Looking forward to this one and the series at Fenway.
I just realized that I've seen Derek Jeter play in person more often than any other athlete.
Think of how often he was the consistently main cog in the success of such a successful franchise.
Re2pect indeed!
Now batting for the Yankees Number 2 Derek Jeter Number 2
I feel so old. I remember when Jeter was the young kid on the Yankees.
The Flip - the single greatest play in baseball history. Case closed.
I'm 63. I consider myself blessed to have spent the last two decades as a die-hard Yankee fan.
I thank the good Lord that I was made a Yankee-fan.
[4] if jeter is old, i'm old. same age : )
[7] Me too!
Hope he gets one more sharp-single to right-field tonight with that inside-out swing.
[4] Yup. Course I hit the big 50 in three weeks.
fucking shit.
Blergh and double blergh
lets go Yankees!
Happy Birthday, Scooter!
[5] i can't get the flip out of my head
[14] thanks!
i wrote a song called "the flip" for an old band. i have a new solo piece called "flip side")
[15] my titles had more to do with a bass drum technique... : )
This is a true 2014 farewell. And I, for one, am grateful.
i figured we'd have a packed house here tonight at the banter. kinda like a playoff game. guess not...
here comes the captain!!!
Be nice for a home run here.
Jeet! Woooo!!!
I'll take an appropriate two bagger.
JETER!!!
thisclose to tying the game. his run will tie the game...
[20] i figured he would've homered... so close!
[24] Yeah, I thought that was gone off the bat. Close!
YEAH!!!
Tied up! Shifty shift shifts in favor of the Yankees.
How many players in baseball history have ever played in fewer games with playoff implications as our Captain?
tie game.
[25] me too.
[28] in that lengthy of a career? i imagine none...
Good evening, Team.
Sad night...
I'm a little late but at least I heard it on the radio. Atta boy, Captain!
[28] Baseball reference is 504ing it at the moment, but I calculated it the other day. Including post season games, 99.965% of his games have been meaningful. I doubt that record will ever be broken.
If defense wins championships, the Orioles aren't going far.
Kay sounds too melodramatic to me. Otherwise, great, long first inning!
If this game goes on forever, as it appears if might, does that mean that metaphysically speaking, Jeter can never retire.
Was listening to Ma & Pa while riding the morning train here. You can imagine their reaction to the Jeter 2-bagger... 'Oh my...belerrghggeeGawd,haveUEVER,I meanIcan..'
not a normal jeter throw...
that's better!
(Nice to see Andy. Have I mentioned I love that man?)
Phil Hughes was offered the half million dollar bonus he lost due to a rain delay (he was 1 out short of the incentive in his contract). He turned it down.
Finished the season with the best K/BB ratio in MLB history. Maybe we shoulda kept him.
[42] He's not good at YS.
Always liked Phil. Reminded me of Ralph Terry. Quality young man.
I suppose. I remember when Homer Bailey and Phil Hughes were prospects 1 and 1A. There was a lot of debate over which one was better. They've been pretty evenly matched over the years. And kind of disappointing, at least compared to the high hopes everyone had.
safe.
jeter's up!!!
[43] Phil "60 pitches through 2" Hughes.
I hate Nick Markakis. Seeing him strike out makes me happy.
He's out. WTF are they still on the field? Oi! Replay better be quicker next year?
Yes, a Jeter DP!
(41) Hey weeping! Yes, I believe you have expressed admiration for Mr.A.P. in the past.
Take Derek out of game prediction: Mo, Andy, Jorge go get him (maybe Bernie too?).
Or even better, tied in the bottom of the ninth, Derek hits a walk off.
[53] I'd prefer that! too.
'sup all!
Damn, I thought it was going to rain all biblical like this evening and I'd be alright having to work late.
Glad to see that Cap'n has given the crowd some cheers this evening already!
I am a DJ I am what I play. When I was a kid, a DJ was a juvenile delinquent.
These letters are so much more positive now. Love Derek Jeter, and what he means to NY, our glorious ethnic tapestry and so much more.
Enjoy your life Derek. I'm sure he will continue to be a part of ours in some way.
Hey yose.
I'm here.
I was feeling kind of down, but now I'm actually happy. Yeah, it's the end of the era. But, it's time. I'm ready. I bet DJ is too.
Oh, well.
Standing ovation for striking out. Don't see that very often.
Interesting. Looks like the ballboy reached in his back pocket and gave someone in the crowd a "normal" ball on that foul ball by Jeter; I didn't see what he did with the real one. I hope he thought that up for himself ...
[55] cult!
[57] RI! Whew. wondering where you were...
[59] i know, right?!
Wasn't 1995 three or four years ago?
[61] Nostra!
He'll wear the uniform again. If only for Old Timer's Day.
Phew
[64] True dat!
hey thelarmis - please post the "The Flip" and the "Flip Side" right now!
This game is featuring everything.
Base runners means more expected AB for DJ.
I don't know if anyone said this already here, but that shoulder patch bugs me. Makes it seem like he's dead.
Promising, promising.
Damn, that bunt deserved a hit.
[70] yup! I wonder how DJ feels wearing his own number on a patch on his sleeve?
Is it wrong to hope for a Brett K, to be followed by a Derek salami?
[67] wish i could!
"The Flip" was for an old band that i adored. we did demos in '05-'06. I don't think i have a great pro recording of it. best i have is a somewhat noisy rehearsal version. i think it's still good though. one day, i plan on having a part of my website dedicated to that band. when i do, i'll certainly post that.
in the past few years, i've composed a few pieces that have parts inspired by "The Flip." the main one is called "Flip Side" and i only have a demo of it. That will definitely be professionally recorded and released, but it'll be a few years.
at this point, i don't even have these tunes on my computer to share...
There's also a Hank Mobley record called The Flip. it's one of his latest Blue Note albums and, unfortunately, not that good. but i love the title!
there's a certain fancy bass drum technique that i use. i got the gist of it from a lesson i took with the amazing Jojo Mayer, before he was so famous. the technique doesn't have a name, but i call it "The Flip"
GW Hit! Let's go, Captain!
grand slam #2 for #2?!?!?!?!?!
[74] Part I completed (in effect).
[70] jeter has said the tributes sometimes make him feel like he's dead.
hopefully, the grand slam he's about to hit will make everyone feel so very alive!!!
A single will do.
Come on, Derek!
i'm standing
Low, blue!
My wife thinks it's a conspiracy! lol....
ah, fuck it - i'll take it!
Well, it's an RBI!
Hit and an error.
hardy's tribute?!
Hahahaha! Thank god it wasn't Captain DP.
Sloppy O's!
Ah , FC and an error.
Heh.
Billy Crystal, Spike Lee, and Rudy Giuliani get stuck in an elevator...
[93] and the door closed on Brian Williams
Hm, so they will need four base runners next inning... or to blow the lead... for DJ to come up again.
sigh
You can jump for joy if you want, RI, but I'm a sad individual.
Who are the Yankees now?
Props to HiroKi for settling down after the 1st.
Quick check of score guide, Big Blue beating Redskins 21-7. An after thought.
Ouch!
that's some crowd noise!
captain starting to feel it...
Wow. Cap'n getting misty out there ...
[96] An existential question. I think we are moving towards a pitching era, and I like our rotation.
Is he not going to play in Boston?
jeter's fam moved to the front row...
Getting a little verklempt myself. The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, Roman, nor an empire. Discuss amongst yourselves.
Hope MLB.TV shows this... Hey everyone. Cant believe this is really the last game Jeter will play in the Stadium...
[106] It's the "free game" tonight.
i'm really sad ...
[108] I'm not sad! Strange..was WAY sad seeing Mo last year..
dammit.
let's load the bases, take another shot at it!
I'm really sad too
[109] i'm a total sap. you know that!
Who knows if it would be "legal", but what I'd like to see in the 9th ... is Mom and Dad coming out, with 2 outs in the 9th to take Jeter off ... followed by him being met by Mo, Po, Bernie & Andy meeting him as he crossed the line ...
No one warming in the bullpen. Hiroki's game. Well, Derek's game.
You got to get up to get down. C'mon, Kenny! That's your go-to line!
our man hiro also had a nice last game!
ok, 2 more with no outs made...
[113] nice, cult!
wait. we need THREE more non-outs...
it was 56 errors, costas. stop saying 58!
[107] Aye, I meant whatever happens between innings etc...
Got the boy watching with me. Really hope he gets as lucky as I did someday, and has a wonderful alltime Yankee to watch.
Ah, well, it was a long shot that he'd bat again.
ok. do we root for giving up an earl weaver special, so DJ can win it in the 9th? ; )
Okay, I'm getting a little blurry-eyed now. Yep.
i'm wearing my Thank You Captain t-shirt.
[123] that makes two of us...
D-Rob, here we go!
Hammer it down for history.
I've got this broadcast LOUD ... my neighbors can hear the LOVE.
Sign of the Cross, nice
He's getting veklempt too.
[123] jeter, two. i mean, too...
Jebus, guys, give the guy a little break, with all this dust, if the ball gets hit to him, he might boot it ...
[125] Actually it looks like three. Derek looks pretty blurry-eyed himself.
[132] three is my favorite number, so that's good!
where was that, blue?!
[102] Good point.
Setting up a 6 4 3 DP
[105] laughing
C'mon Hammer ... NAIL 'EM!
BANG, nailed.
NAILED!
Huh, shouldn't they take Derek out now? I mean, what if Adam Jones GIDP?
The chants are wonderful.
Wow ... YS3 can get loud ...
Gimme a double play!
Michael Kay could possibly say fewer words in this type situation.
Fucking bombed.
Hmm
Oh, Dave.
Dave, Dave, Dave.
i hate adam jones.
does that mean jeter doesn't have the game winning rbi?
Hammer hammered.
Um ... that was NOT to script ...
[149] No, he has.
The game-winning RBI is the one that puts the winning team ahead for the last time.
Yeesh. C'mon Hammer...!
Dellin! we need you.
[152] oh yeah. ok, cool.
i still hate adam jones though.
derek's eyes are watery.
one more out...
Nailed!
Okay, just making it dramatic.
Two down.
Much better, Hammer! One more out - the boy is tired and wants to go to sleep. :)
Unfuckingbelievable.
Oy.
No HAMMER, NO!
booooooooooooooooooooooo! WHAT THE FUCK!
tied up.
Sigh.
This is not the way I wanted Jeter to get one more AB!
you gotta be kidding me.
do we not re-sign the hamma? hand it to dellin?
no win for hiro.
will derek hit the game winning homer?!?!?!
Oh fuck... But Jeter gets to hit again.
Jeez, imagine if they'd taken him out with one away?? Good non-move by Joe.
I'm going to have to watch this all tonight..stuck on a deadly boring call to Shanghai now about blahblah checmicals blah blah deliverables..don't these people know about baseball???!
a good thing GI Joe didn't take him out!
[167] I think all signs point to they'll let him walk ...
derek will be soooo pissed if we don't win this game.
I want Pirella on third when Jetes comes up.
[173] He won't be the only one! :)
good.
if gritner doubles, pirela better stop at 3rd! : )
Good start!
Bunt. Single. Ballgame. Let's go!
I want Richardson at third when Jeter comes up...
I wonder if A-Rod is watching...
Don't get picked off!!
I want a Jeter walk off.
Holy crap. Come on, Jeet!
steal 3rd on the first pitch, kid. successfully!
Come on, Derek, just dunk it into right field and have a nice life.
Ok Derek, the table is set - win one more for us!
[184] yeah!
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell yeah! OF course!
Awesome.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There it is!
I called it.
YES!!!
WAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh Captain, you always come through! We love you!
Thank you, Hammer, for making it possible! :)
don't play in boston. at this point, just don't...
FUCK. YES.
Thanks Cap'n, it's been awesome.
bernabe!
Better than a movie.
HOW GREAT IS THAT?!!
perfect ending. perfect.
magic.
Fuck, Jorgie's grey!
THEEEEEEEEEEESE LITTLE TOWN BLUUUES!
Mo! Po! Andy!
put the band back, fellas!!!
Bernie!
The Last Single Digit Yankee.
JETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jorgie's so gray now. And it looks like Bernie's been eating well in retirement.
It's great to see them again.
I'm going to cry.
"For what? I'm just trying to do my job."
Awww, Derek was trying not cry and feeling all messed up. I love seeing Joe, Bernie, Jorge, Mariano, and Tino hug Derek.
[207] Yeah, check out Bernie.
Yep, Bernie put on some weight, but he looks good. Joe looks older.
Whew.
Man.
Well, thanks, Banterers!
And thanks, DJ.
This has been one amazing night!
Gawd, I am going miss watching Derek leap in the air. I love that he got a final hit.
Mo.
Night all. Got a date with a wet pillow.
"ha ha ha thats a typical Derek Jeter night"
Praise be to you, Mo!
Perfect end to a not-so-great season. He's not going to play in Boston..
how was he soooo calm during that at-bat? i would've been shaking like crazy.
and look how happy he was when he jumped into CC's arms!
[218] perfect end to a perfect career.
i sure hope he won't play in boston...
I can't believe he got a hit.
I mean, I can but I can't.
I hope he'll play in Boston.
I think he'll play in Boston..
I'd bet he'll play in Boston...
i guess he's gonna pinch hit in beantown...
He's really not coming back.
This is it.
Hell of an end ...
Those obnoxious Red Sox fans don't deserve it, but Derek is being very gracious saying that he will play in some capacity in Boston out of respect for their fans.
dear d-rob,
thanks for blowing the save!
-thelarmis
Seriously, I never thought for a moment that this was the last time Jeter would set foot on the field in some capacity. For his faults, getting into some facet of the games the weekend was always in the cards, it's in his DNA ...
[228] I don't know..a 1/3rd filled Fenway against an awful AAA-level Sox team..
i can't believe the era is over...
wish i had the YES network.
i've been watching on MLB...
fuck, now i realized i probably could've had the yes feed. until now, at least. crap...
Jeter calls this game "an outer body experience"
[229] Always. No matter WHAT happened in his last YS game. Dude is in THE GAME, and THE GAME is ALL business. Appearing in some fashion in these last away games was ALWAYS on the cards. You don't think that Jeter's acutely aware that there are PLENTY of Yankees fans coming out to see him in Fenway this weekend? Hell, even if there weren't, the chance to imprint something historical onto the rivalry would be reason enough ...
[233] I think tonight changes all that, the mental & physical exhaustion must be intense.
You? Me? Maybe.
But that ain't his DNA.
He'll play again.
He'll bat again ...
He's right.
He did play hard.
Every fucking game, every inning, every pitch, every play.
No one played harder.
He's right.
It's just that simple.
Just got back from the game. Man, that was sweet. The amazing thing was not how crowded it was but how many people stayed in their seats. Far more than usual.
Anyhow, that's the best blown save I've ever seen. I was rooting for Robbie to blow it just so DJ got that last at bat.
And then of course he wins it, right?
That's what separates the excellent players, even Hall of Famers, from the truly great ones. It's not just that Jeter's a great player, he's a great performer.
Hey guys, where the heck was the second baseman on that hit? Not saying it wasn't a clean hit, but looked like the second baseman was right up the gut, probably stuck too far up the middle holding the guy on. But jeez, no way I'd give that responsibility to the second baseman with Jeter up.
I changed my mind. I think a standard positioned 2B has a good chance at that ball. At least to knock it down and stop the run.
