S’long Old Chum

Derek Jeter plays his last game in the Bronx tonight. It’s the first home game he’s ever played when the Yankees were out of playoff contention.

It’s been raining all day but word is they’ll still play. Our man Hiroki’s on the hill.

2 Eric McCauley   ~  Sep 25, 2014 4:36 pm

Looking forward to this one and the series at Fenway.

3 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 5:37 pm

I just realized that I've seen Derek Jeter play in person more often than any other athlete.
Think of how often he was the consistently main cog in the success of such a successful franchise.
Re2pect indeed!
Now batting for the Yankees Number 2 Derek Jeter Number 2

4 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 5:56 pm

I feel so old. I remember when Jeter was the young kid on the Yankees.

5 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 5:59 pm

The Flip - the single greatest play in baseball history. Case closed.

6 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:02 pm

I'm 63. I consider myself blessed to have spent the last two decades as a die-hard Yankee fan.
I thank the good Lord that I was made a Yankee-fan.

7 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:03 pm

[4] if jeter is old, i'm old. same age : )

8 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:07 pm

[7] Me too!
Hope he gets one more sharp-single to right-field tonight with that inside-out swing.

9 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:07 pm

[4] Yup. Course I hit the big 50 in three weeks.

10 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:10 pm

fucking shit.

11 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:12 pm

Blergh and double blergh

12 edoubletrouble   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:12 pm

13 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:12 pm

Happy Birthday, Scooter!

14 edoubletrouble   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:13 pm

[5] i can't get the flip out of my head

15 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:15 pm

[14] thanks!

i wrote a song called "the flip" for an old band. i have a new solo piece called "flip side")

16 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:16 pm

[15] my titles had more to do with a bass drum technique... : )

17 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:19 pm

This is a true 2014 farewell. And I, for one, am grateful.

18 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:19 pm

i figured we'd have a packed house here tonight at the banter. kinda like a playoff game. guess not...

19 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:20 pm

here comes the captain!!!

20 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:21 pm

Be nice for a home run here.

21 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:24 pm

Jeet! Woooo!!!

22 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:24 pm

I'll take an appropriate two bagger.

23 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:25 pm

JETER!!!

thisclose to tying the game. his run will tie the game...

24 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:26 pm

[20] i figured he would've homered... so close!

25 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:27 pm

[24] Yeah, I thought that was gone off the bat. Close!

26 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:27 pm

YEAH!!!

27 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:28 pm

Tied up! Shifty shift shifts in favor of the Yankees.

28 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:28 pm

How many players in baseball history have ever played in fewer games with playoff implications as our Captain?

29 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:28 pm

tie game.

30 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:28 pm

[25] me too.

31 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:29 pm

[28] in that lengthy of a career? i imagine none...

32 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:30 pm

Good evening, Team.

Sad night...

33 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:32 pm

I'm a little late but at least I heard it on the radio. Atta boy, Captain!

34 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:33 pm

[28] Baseball reference is 504ing it at the moment, but I calculated it the other day. Including post season games, 99.965% of his games have been meaningful. I doubt that record will ever be broken.

35 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:36 pm

If defense wins championships, the Orioles aren't going far.

36 coleman42   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:37 pm

Kay sounds too melodramatic to me. Otherwise, great, long first inning!

37 mhoward120   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:41 pm

If this game goes on forever, as it appears if might, does that mean that metaphysically speaking, Jeter can never retire.

38 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:44 pm

Was listening to Ma & Pa while riding the morning train here. You can imagine their reaction to the Jeter 2-bagger... 'Oh my...belerrghggeeGawd,haveUEVER,I meanIcan..'

39 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:44 pm

not a normal jeter throw...

40 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:45 pm

that's better!

41 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:46 pm

(Nice to see Andy. Have I mentioned I love that man?)

42 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:46 pm

Phil Hughes was offered the half million dollar bonus he lost due to a rain delay (he was 1 out short of the incentive in his contract). He turned it down.

Finished the season with the best K/BB ratio in MLB history. Maybe we shoulda kept him.

43 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:51 pm

[42] He's not good at YS.

44 MSM35   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:53 pm

Always liked Phil. Reminded me of Ralph Terry. Quality young man.

45 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:55 pm

I suppose. I remember when Homer Bailey and Phil Hughes were prospects 1 and 1A. There was a lot of debate over which one was better. They've been pretty evenly matched over the years. And kind of disappointing, at least compared to the high hopes everyone had.

46 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:56 pm

safe.

jeter's up!!!

47 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 6:56 pm

[43] Phil "60 pitches through 2" Hughes.

48 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:03 pm

I hate Nick Markakis. Seeing him strike out makes me happy.

49 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:08 pm

He's out. WTF are they still on the field? Oi! Replay better be quicker next year?

50 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:08 pm

Yes, a Jeter DP!

51 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:13 pm

(41) Hey weeping! Yes, I believe you have expressed admiration for Mr.A.P. in the past.

52 coleman42   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:14 pm

Take Derek out of game prediction: Mo, Andy, Jorge go get him (maybe Bernie too?).

53 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:21 pm

Or even better, tied in the bottom of the ninth, Derek hits a walk off.

54 coleman42   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:22 pm

[53] I'd prefer that! too.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:31 pm

'sup all!

Damn, I thought it was going to rain all biblical like this evening and I'd be alright having to work late.

Glad to see that Cap'n has given the crowd some cheers this evening already!

56 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:35 pm

I am a DJ I am what I play. When I was a kid, a DJ was a juvenile delinquent.
These letters are so much more positive now. Love Derek Jeter, and what he means to NY, our glorious ethnic tapestry and so much more.
Enjoy your life Derek. I'm sure he will continue to be a part of ours in some way.

57 RIYank   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:43 pm

Hey yose.

I'm here.

I was feeling kind of down, but now I'm actually happy. Yeah, it's the end of the era. But, it's time. I'm ready. I bet DJ is too.

58 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:46 pm

Oh, well.

59 randym77   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:47 pm

Standing ovation for striking out. Don't see that very often.

60 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:50 pm

Interesting. Looks like the ballboy reached in his back pocket and gave someone in the crowd a "normal" ball on that foul ball by Jeter; I didn't see what he did with the real one. I hope he thought that up for himself ...

61 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 7:52 pm

[55] cult!

[57] RI! Whew. wondering where you were...

[59] i know, right?!

68 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:18 pm

This game is featuring everything.

69 RIYank   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:22 pm

Base runners means more expected AB for DJ.

70 RIYank   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:22 pm

I don't know if anyone said this already here, but that shoulder patch bugs me. Makes it seem like he's dead.

71 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:24 pm

Promising, promising.

72 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:24 pm

Damn, that bunt deserved a hit.

73 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:24 pm

[70] yup! I wonder how DJ feels wearing his own number on a patch on his sleeve?

74 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:26 pm

Is it wrong to hope for a Brett K, to be followed by a Derek salami?

75 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:26 pm

[67] wish i could!

"The Flip" was for an old band that i adored. we did demos in '05-'06. I don't think i have a great pro recording of it. best i have is a somewhat noisy rehearsal version. i think it's still good though. one day, i plan on having a part of my website dedicated to that band. when i do, i'll certainly post that.

in the past few years, i've composed a few pieces that have parts inspired by "The Flip." the main one is called "Flip Side" and i only have a demo of it. That will definitely be professionally recorded and released, but it'll be a few years.

at this point, i don't even have these tunes on my computer to share...

There's also a Hank Mobley record called The Flip. it's one of his latest Blue Note albums and, unfortunately, not that good. but i love the title!

there's a certain fancy bass drum technique that i use. i got the gist of it from a lesson i took with the amazing Jojo Mayer, before he was so famous. the technique doesn't have a name, but i call it "The Flip"

76 Ara Just Fair   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:27 pm

GW Hit! Let's go, Captain!

[74] Part I completed (in effect).

79 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:28 pm

[70] jeter has said the tributes sometimes make him feel like he's dead.

hopefully, the grand slam he's about to hit will make everyone feel so very alive!!!

A single will do.

95 RIYank   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:37 pm

Hm, so they will need four base runners next inning... or to blow the lead... for DJ to come up again.

96 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:39 pm

sigh

You can jump for joy if you want, RI, but I'm a sad individual.

114 rbj   ~  Sep 25, 2014 8:51 pm

Jorgie's so gray now. And it looks like Bernie's been eating well in retirement.

It's great to see them again.

208 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:24 pm

I'm going to cry.

"For what? I'm just trying to do my job."

209 Simone   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:25 pm

Awww, Derek was trying not cry and feeling all messed up. I love seeing Joe, Bernie, Jorge, Mariano, and Tino hug Derek.

210 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:26 pm

[207] Yeah, check out Bernie.

211 Simone   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:26 pm

Yep, Bernie put on some weight, but he looks good. Joe looks older.

212 RIYank   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:27 pm

Well, thanks, Banterers!
And thanks, DJ.

214 Simone   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:27 pm

Gawd, I am going miss watching Derek leap in the air. I love that he got a final hit.

"ha ha ha thats a typical Derek Jeter night"

Praise be to you, Mo!

218 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:28 pm

Perfect end to a not-so-great season. He's not going to play in Boston..

219 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:28 pm

how was he soooo calm during that at-bat? i would've been shaking like crazy.

and look how happy he was when he jumped into CC's arms!

220 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:29 pm

[218] perfect end to a perfect career.

i sure hope he won't play in boston...

221 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:30 pm

I can't believe he got a hit.

I mean, I can but I can't.

222 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:31 pm

I hope he'll play in Boston.

I think he'll play in Boston..

I'd bet he'll play in Boston...

223 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:31 pm

i guess he's gonna pinch hit in beantown...

224 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:32 pm

He's really not coming back.

This is it.

225 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:34 pm

Hell of an end ...

226 Simone   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:35 pm

Those obnoxious Red Sox fans don't deserve it, but Derek is being very gracious saying that he will play in some capacity in Boston out of respect for their fans.

227 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:35 pm

dear d-rob,

thanks for blowing the save!

-thelarmis

228 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:38 pm

Seriously, I never thought for a moment that this was the last time Jeter would set foot on the field in some capacity. For his faults, getting into some facet of the games the weekend was always in the cards, it's in his DNA ...

229 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:39 pm

[228] I don't know..a 1/3rd filled Fenway against an awful AAA-level Sox team..

230 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:40 pm

i can't believe the era is over...

231 thelarmis   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:41 pm

wish i had the YES network.

i've been watching on MLB...

fuck, now i realized i probably could've had the yes feed. until now, at least. crap...

232 edoubletrouble   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:44 pm

Jeter calls this game "an outer body experience"

233 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:47 pm

[229] Always. No matter WHAT happened in his last YS game. Dude is in THE GAME, and THE GAME is ALL business. Appearing in some fashion in these last away games was ALWAYS on the cards. You don't think that Jeter's acutely aware that there are PLENTY of Yankees fans coming out to see him in Fenway this weekend? Hell, even if there weren't, the chance to imprint something historical onto the rivalry would be reason enough ...

234 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Sep 25, 2014 9:51 pm

[233] I think tonight changes all that, the mental & physical exhaustion must be intense.

235 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 25, 2014 10:01 pm

You? Me? Maybe.

But that ain't his DNA.

He'll play again.

He'll bat again ...

236 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 25, 2014 10:01 pm

He's right.

He did play hard.

Every fucking game, every inning, every pitch, every play.

No one played harder.

He's right.

It's just that simple.

237 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 25, 2014 10:54 pm

Just got back from the game. Man, that was sweet. The amazing thing was not how crowded it was but how many people stayed in their seats. Far more than usual.

Anyhow, that's the best blown save I've ever seen. I was rooting for Robbie to blow it just so DJ got that last at bat.

And then of course he wins it, right?

That's what separates the excellent players, even Hall of Famers, from the truly great ones. It's not just that Jeter's a great player, he's a great performer.

238 Jon DeRosa   ~  Sep 26, 2014 6:18 am

Hey guys, where the heck was the second baseman on that hit? Not saying it wasn't a clean hit, but looked like the second baseman was right up the gut, probably stuck too far up the middle holding the guy on. But jeez, no way I'd give that responsibility to the second baseman with Jeter up.

239 Jon DeRosa   ~  Sep 26, 2014 6:22 am

I changed my mind. I think a standard positioned 2B has a good chance at that ball. At least to knock it down and stop the run.
