Apparently not …. as they’ve reportedly just signed Jason Johnson, and Phil Coke has been told to prepare to be a starter next year.

I don’t know if we “need” Andy, but lord knows I’m happy to keep him round.

Of course part of that’s the sentimentalist in me. As many of you know, I have a lot of affection for the guy.

Plus, as Alex says, it’s certainly not a *bad* thing to have him around.

About three days ago I was outside in the darkness and cold and began to fantasize about batters swinging over the tops of splitters. No particular batters and no particular pitchers, just baseball.

I don’t know quite why that image, but I got so depressed when I snapped out of my reverie and realized the winter’s only just begun. Three. More. Months.

I know, I know, two if you count Florida.

    Can’t get here soon enough.

After the holidays, the winter just gets longer and baseball more distant.

I think it’s always better to just have an established rotation, no competing for a spot. If you’re not sure who you want pitching for you, your options probably aren’t that great.

Then again, seeing as Pavano signed a contract with the Indians, even that may not be accurate.

Oh, I doubt we need him, but as other commenters have said, I like having him around. My heart was a wee bit broken when he was off in Houston.

    [4] Who?

Do they *need* him? No. Would they be better with him? I’m not convinced.

Pettitte is an expensive dish of comfort food.

    [4] From ESPN.com:

“To make room for Pavano, the Indians designated infielder Michael Aubrey for assignment.”

    Now that’s just harsh.

    Diane,

Nothing good can come from this Jason Johnson signing.

I’m getting one of my feelings. And I’m usually right on those.

I wouldn’t worry about Jason Johnson. He’s minor league filler, the last guy on the roster if he’s even that.

    [11] Raf,

Mattpat isn’t happy unless he’s worrying about such things. It’s his way. I’m just glad for his sake (and health) that Pavano and Betemit are both gone and safely signed with other teams!
