"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

No Asterisk*

MJ: double-nickel. Bernard: 60.

Kobe: 61 against the Knicks tonight:  no asterisk, son.

19-31 from the field, 20-20 from the line.

The most points ever scored in an NBA game at the Garden.

Bow Down to a Player Who’s Greater Than You.

The funny thing is, it's not even about the Garden. He's throwing down the gauntlet for LeBron James on Wednesday!

I dislike Kobe but he's pretty amazing.

Man. I almost tuned in when I heard the Lakers were at the Garden. But then again, I haven't watched a full minute of an NBA game this year. Ah, well. The man can ball.

[5] Wonder what Mussina was thinking when he said that..you don't mess with Mo, he's "Slim" to every other closer's "Jim" (5 points for that reference, music geeks..)

Kobe..think he's tired of those LeBron comparisons??

[6] i know nothing about basketball, don't care to or pretend to, but would i be way off to say something like:

kobe:lebron - herbie:mccoy ?!

[7] Oh..not sure about that comparison, equivalent jazz figures would need to think about..

Kobe is like an A-Rod type..ridiculously gifted, quirky enough personality that a lot of the public (or his teammates) never embraced him..Lots of tabloid "issues"..

LeBron..can't think of anyone in baseball who compares to this guy. He is truly one-of-a-kind..maybe the all-round physical skills of someone like Mickey Mantle, a guy who can dominate in ALL areas (but without the booze habit)..??

wow, i had NO idea lebron was that good of a player or athlete. i do know he's a Yankee fan, so he's okay in my book! : )

Kobe is like A Rod in that they both want to be the greatest, not only in the game, but in history.

Le Bron is ridiculous.

Oh, and I should have noted that Kobe's 61 in the most in the new garden. Elgin Baylor and Wilt (twice) scored more in the old garden.

That was a clinic he put on last night, absolutely ridiculous. The thing about it too, and (partially) the reason why he's almost universally loathed outside of LA is that he makes it look so effortless.

I'll still take MJ's 55 though, with the drama of it being his return after "retirement: (aka Stern imposed Napoleon-like exile to Birmingham, Alabama) and that it came against a stronger Knicks team. Knicks ARE damn fun to watch again though, so thats something
