"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Philly in the Funhouse, Part Dos

Up to Andy to stop the bleeding.  One game losing streak sounds about right.  Still want to win this series.

andy

I expect the ball to continue jumping out today.  Just hope the Yanks are the ones hitting the dingers.

I sure would like to see them jump all over the Phillies early today and make this one a laugher! I'd much rather bitch about Pettitte giving up a small portion of a lead, than moan about them awaiting the three-run HR that never seems to come...

: )

[1] i predict today is the day you are going to be nice to andy pj because he is pitching so well :}

yipee - haven't spent sat afternoon with mcacrver and buck for a few weeks

let's see how all the yanks do rh

3 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 4:11 pm

[2] no tv for me ... we'll see how long I can stand sterling and waldman ... right now the magic 8 ball says, "outlook uncertain".

4 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 4:19 pm

nope, couldn't take it ... have to try the phillies crew.

waldman might just have the most annoying voice on radio ...

5 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 4:19 pm

nice dp

[3] ah sorry - we'll have to "ask again later"

buck is definitely going with "all the hrs at yankee stadium" meme

6 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 4:20 pm

[3] [4] well damn - that was fast :{

7 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 4:21 pm

Let's go Yankees, and make it a Happ-y day for your fans.

8 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 4:21 pm

I think the Yankees forgot how to work for a win after those silly games vs the Os. They need a blowout or to re-learn the lesson - fast!

9 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 4:23 pm

two backward ks to start the game - yuck

10 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 4:27 pm

I am unHappy

11 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 4:29 pm

[5] listening to Sterling call a game is like falling down a long flight of stairs ... listening to Waldman is like punching yourself in the face while you fall

12 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 4:32 pm

Sigh.

14 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 4:33 pm

I have a bad feeling about this game. It's entirely possible that the Phillies are better and will show it in this series.

15 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 4:33 pm

man, sounds like there are a lot of Phillies fans in the stadium today ...

16 51cq24   ~  May 23, 2009 4:36 pm

none of those pitches were strikes?

17 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 4:41 pm

Oopsie!

18 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 4:43 pm

[14] their pitching isn't that special. a team era+ of 85. but they mash like crazy- which is showing in this series.

[15] saw lots of phils fans near ys earlier today and waiting on the 4 train

good to get that run back quickly

19 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 4:44 pm

well, at least we got a run in from 3rd and less than 2 outs ...

20 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 4:45 pm

Let's see now...

Yankee starter gettin' squeezed? Check!

Yankee starter gettin' hit hard? Check!

Yankee starter making a mistake with location to the one of the hottest hitters in the NL? Check!

Yankees behind not even one time through the Phillies order? Check!

Kids on the Yankees (and Swisher) exhibiting enough confidence to supply some offense early? Check!

Yep, Andy's pitching today!

Hang on to your Yankees Caps folks! It's going to be "one of those games!"

heh heh

: )

21 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 4:45 pm

Bizarre choice by Cervelli but otherwise an excellent inning. I love getting that man in from second with no outs. Really it was just what the Yanks needed instead of everyone trying to launch one onto the subway tracks. Due credit to Girardi if he called for that bunt.

22 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 4:46 pm

Hey, a "small ball" run.

23 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 4:49 pm

[20] I'm not usually a "the ump's squeezing our pitcher!" type but it does seem like the zone is a bit bigger for Happ.

24 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 4:52 pm

Much better command in that half Andy!

Much better!

: )

25 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 4:59 pm

[23] It's going to be a long day for Andy if he continues to not get those outside corner pitchers that guys like Maddux and Glavine made a living on for more than a decade, Hawk (see also Moyer).

Cervelli appears to be more valuable than we think as he clearly calmed Andy down after the HR and walk in that last half inning!

If they can only get into the Phillies pen given the short count their starter is on, they will be in business...

: )

27 RIYank   ~  May 23, 2009 5:02 pm

A frakking rookie?! No, NYS isn't Happy Homer Land.

48 zack   ~  May 23, 2009 5:18 pm

The New York Yankees, providing rookie batters and hitters with memories for years now!

Jesus, I really don't understand how people can argue against this stadium as a bandbox. We are stuck with two choices: either its a bandbox, or the Yankee pitching simply stinks!

49 zack   ~  May 23, 2009 5:19 pm

Looks like the offense has suddenly gone into sleep mode these last two games...

50 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 5:19 pm

Bleh! You can almost set your watch by it. The Yankees fail to score with a man on and nobody out, then the opponent comes right back and scores...

Andy + Windup = Not Bad

Andy + Stretch = A Much Older Andy Pettitte

51 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 5:20 pm

Have there been any balls caught on the warning track, yet?

52 zack   ~  May 23, 2009 5:20 pm

God, I hate having to listen to the radio on these sat. blackouts. Walydman is just atrocious...

53 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:21 pm

the kid looks really good at third. he was calm and collected on that play and threw a laser to Tex.

54 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 5:22 pm

If it's any consolation, 4-1 will not be the final score.

55 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:22 pm

[52] i have the tv game on mute and am listening to music. it's the best of all worlds! : )

[54] true dat.

57 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 5:23 pm

[54] i'm sure not ... but i'm not sure it is consolation. the offense has to wake up.

58 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:23 pm

88 pitches thru 5 for andrew eugene. if he holds them at 4 runs, he should be able to go 7. that'd be nice.

59 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 5:26 pm

[49] Looks like the Yankee offense is observing World Turtle Day

60 zack   ~  May 23, 2009 5:27 pm

61 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 5:28 pm

what a surprise fox finds a black guy and that's john mayberry's dad - dipshits

62 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 5:28 pm

Mayberry Jr. is one tall drink of water. As much as it sucks, good for him and his old man.

63 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:29 pm

apparently, we're facing CY Happ...

64 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 5:31 pm

[54] That's what I'm afraid of, Just Fair...

This team more closely resembles the one that Cleveland crushed in April, than the team that just won nine straight.

65 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 5:31 pm

I really don't understand why the offense suddenly looks so anemic. It's not like these pitchers are buzz saws.

66 ms october   ~  May 23, 2009 5:31 pm

he uses initials - j.a. and pronounces it jay

69 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:33 pm

[66] that's lame, he does that. R.A., J.A. - these initials don't roll off the tongue. AJ, CC - that's better.

84 zack   ~  May 23, 2009 5:46 pm

Have I mentioned I hate Sterling? That's two full on home run calls, where Sterling is so caught up in his own blusteriness, that go foul. And then he starts moronically blabbing away on how the Yankees should LOVE the fact that the stadium gives up tons of home runs...

85 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:50 pm

whew. exhale...

86 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 5:50 pm

88 The Hawk   ~  May 23, 2009 5:53 pm

Sterling's argument is idiotic, even beyond the aesthetic issues.

89 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:54 pm

well, that's prolly it for Andy. 7 full innings in the boox. in-game WHIP of 1. the mayberry homer is the killer. 114 pitches. who throws the 8th?

90 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 5:56 pm

[89] Coke is it. He was warming.

91 cult of basebaal   ~  May 23, 2009 5:56 pm

92 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 5:56 pm

oh good, happ is out...for some reason. let's win this bitch right here!

[91] you're prolly right...

93 51cq24   ~  May 23, 2009 5:57 pm

so an 89 mph fastball (on fox's gun, so probably more like 86) gets the phillies through 6 innings only giving up 2 runs. that's pathetic.

94 thelarmis   ~  May 23, 2009 6:01 pm

that was a REALLY lame showing by our offense that frame. pathetic. : /

95 OldYanksFan   ~  May 23, 2009 6:01 pm

Wow... In 90 ABs, a .992 OPS for Juan Pierre. Does he Pipp Manny???

96 51cq24   ~  May 23, 2009 6:01 pm

bullshit. that's the first time he's called a strike on that corner, and that was definitely further off than a lot of pitches called balls.

97 Just Fair   ~  May 23, 2009 6:01 pm

What a lame game. : / Til' this point anyway.

98 rbj   ~  May 23, 2009 6:05 pm

[92] Happ was only scheduled to throw 75-80 pitches. Why he lasted so long, you'll have to take up with the hitters.

I had to go drive -- so I caught the ending with John and Suzyn. Well, really just with John, since Suzyn headed for field level. But I was imagining the joy in Banterland.

I can't believe A-Rod got a meaningless homer again. A walk would have worked out just the same. Selfish.

Here's ARod's current 2009 line: 204 .381 .653 1.034
He is averaging 1 hr per 7 AB!
And he is still not 100%. That is obvious, especially in the field. What's really good, is he is laying off sliders/pitches down and out of the zone.

Imagine what we will be in for when he is healthy.
I'm happy to have him DH more with Pena at 3rd.

[162] What’s really good, is he is laying off sliders/pitches down and out of the zone.

Amen to that.

[162],[163] Perhaps the unintended upside of having a hip that's not 100%?

AND PAPSMEAR GIVES UP A TWO OUT, 2 RUN HR TO A SCRUB!!!!
Mets up 3-2, top of the 9th!

One on, one out, after a great play by Wright to turn a double into a force out at 2nd. Now Nancy flies out. 2 down... man on first.

Holy smoke! Great play at SS, who throws it on one hop to first, to get the speedy Mike Lowell. Wow. METS WIN! (Read that: Sox LOSE!)

168 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:03 pm

169 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:03 pm

172 OldYanksFan   ~  May 23, 2009 10:06 pm

Oh... and Papsmear gave up the HR to Omar Santos, he of ONE CAREER HR! (Now he has 2!).

173 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:08 pm

I saw that, OYF! I knew it was a matter of time before one of those walks came back to bite him in the ass!

That's tremendous!

174 OldYanksFan   ~  May 23, 2009 10:10 pm

Check that... OmIr Santos.

175 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:13 pm

Yep yep! And "Cowboy" Joe West had to check the video...

LOL

The four Yankees on the DL (Po, Molina, Nady, and Ransom) went to Tampa to begin rehabilitation games sometime this week!

I can hardly wait until they are full strength!

Wow!

176 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:14 pm

EDIT

Ransom is further behind the others, but all have gone to Tampa.

What about Marte? It's like he fell off the earth. One thing we could use is an above average Lefty in the BP. (not saying Marte is above average but he's SUPOSED to be above average....)

178 PJ   ~  May 23, 2009 10:17 pm

No word on Marte in that article...
