"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

What’s Poppin’?

fireworks

Roy Halladay will face the Yanks today (George Steinbrenner’s birthday) and looks to put a damper on the holiday festivities in the Bronx. It will be a tall task to beat him but stranger things have happened. It’s sunny and beauty-ful in New York.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Happy Birthday George and America!

He's 79 today and we're 233!

funny, we don't look a day over 186.

3 Rich   ~  Jul 4, 2009 12:35 pm

Win one for George.

4 rbj   ~  Jul 4, 2009 12:44 pm

Yesterday, got to watch a Yankee win, saw the Mudhens win and fireworks. Also the start of a 3 day weekend & payday.

Here's hoping the good news keeps coming. Off to watch a 19th century style ball game, Happy Fourth of July everyone!

5 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 12:58 pm

Have fun RBJ! Throw a spitball for me!

: )

6 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:06 pm

C'mon CMW!

7 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:08 pm

Wow @ current Yankees "sharing" Lou Gherig's speech today!

Wow!

8 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:09 pm

Doing the Patriotic hat thing again, I see.

I don't mind the special logo, but does the hat have to be red?

9 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:12 pm

I get to listen to WCBS, but at least I get the Yankees game in some form!

: )

My FOX Saturday Game today is Dodgers at Padres.

I'm going to be sick...

10 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:15 pm

Woohoo DP!

11 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:17 pm

classic Wang DP!

12 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:20 pm

Wang's ERA at a sterling 9.80!

13 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:20 pm

I guess that's why it has to be red. So they can make the canucks wear it, too, and claim it's for Canada Day.

14 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:22 pm

nice work, johnny. i'd like him to steal, if his legs are "under him." let's be aggressive early, try and wear halladay down.

15 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:24 pm

Woohoo A-Rod!

16 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:25 pm

[12] woo hoo!

and nice hit and run...

17 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:25 pm

yeah, A-Rod!!!!

Yanks take the early lead! : )

18 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:26 pm

woo hoo A-Rod! hehe. i'm behind y'all

19 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:27 pm

i'd still rather see Posada in the 5-hole, instead of Robbie...

20 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:29 pm

[19] he'd be better. I really want to see him stick there and turn his RISP numbers around. I know it wouldn't be the popular move but it could be crucial down the stretch if he can build some RISP confidence.

21 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:31 pm

is Wang being helped by the ump on those 2 strike calls? they look a bit outside on gamecast...

22 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:32 pm

throw strikes, please.

[20] i hear ya, man. i thought of that, too. but it's really tempting to put Jorgie behind A-Rod. Posada Rocks!!!

23 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:33 pm

dammit, lost him...

24 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:34 pm

Holy crap. Bad luck.

25 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:34 pm

ugh. and the start looked so promising. : /

26 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:34 pm

Bah! 2-1

27 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:35 pm

and there it is. we're losing. awesome. : /

28 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:35 pm

Gets out of it with a DP.

Man, that was really just bad luck.

29 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:36 pm

at least he got another DP.

let's see if we can actually score more off Doc...

30 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:37 pm

[28] was it on the ground rule double? obviously, i can't see the game. i have braves-nats, cubs-brew crew here...

31 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:37 pm

He isn't pitching bad. Some real tough breaks there. And the walk was obviously bad.

32 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:37 pm

I hope they got their "Hats for Bats" working today, even if they are red!

: )

33 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:38 pm

[30] that was good hitting. not bad pitching though. Just one of those shallow right field low flies that landed fair.

34 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:38 pm

Vagitek goes deep, Sox up 2-nil. he's got 12 so far, guess he's not finished after all...

35 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:39 pm

[30] The ground rule double looked like it was going to be foul, but ended up bouncing on the line. Literally - the chalk flew up when it hit.

The 2-RBI single was a grounder that bounced over Wang, just out of his reach.

36 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:41 pm

And Godzilla ties it up.

37 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:41 pm

Kaboom. Take that, Doc!

38 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:41 pm

Po's hand is still swollen, yet he insisted he could play today...

: /

Woohoo Matsui!

: )

39 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:41 pm

[34] Vagitek. Cervix. What is it with catchers and female reproductive parts?

Wait, wasn't this a Seinfeld bit?

40 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:42 pm

MATSUI-SAN!!!

tie game : )

41 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:42 pm

MATSUI!!!!

42 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:43 pm

seamus & randy = thanks for the 411 on the double, etc.!

43 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:43 pm

[39] No... MLB players have been "pussies" for years now...

: )

44 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:43 pm

[39] Mulva? Deloris? : D

45 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:44 pm

[39] the g/f whose name he forgot? rhymed with something...

46 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:44 pm

wow, gardner looked totally outmatched.

47 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:44 pm

Wang should be more comfy now - his ERA is back into the 10's... : ~

48 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:45 pm

[43] Twat Nixon.

49 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:46 pm

From Petey:

Matsui is 5 of his last 10 with four RBI and four extras. He has three careers dingers against Halladay.

50 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:46 pm

[48] heh heh

Exactly!

51 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:48 pm

[48] hahahaha

[49] matsui happy to be done with interleague i see. I wonder how much that rest helped him.

52 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:48 pm

Great catch, Melk.

53 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:48 pm

Woohoo Melky!

54 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:50 pm

nice play by melky!

55 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:50 pm

34 pitches thru 3 for CMW

9.76 ERA

56 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:51 pm

nice quick inning!

57 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:51 pm

[51] Unknown... they really haven't said much in terms of the swelling of his knees and/or draining them in recent weeks...

58 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:51 pm

[55] I was just gonna point that out.
Man, thelarmis, you are up very late on this Friday night, huh?

59 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:52 pm

[43] Rusty Kuntz.

(worst baseball never EVER! worse even than Dick Pole or Peter Schmuck)

60 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:52 pm

Man, just missed it. Shite.

61 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:53 pm

You can stop that now Vernon!

: )

62 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:53 pm

So, with the catchers', uh, femininity, and with pitchers, well, you know: BJ Ryan, Big Unit, Randy Johnson, Wang, Putz, etc.
Freud would love the current state of baseball. "Receivers", he would say, "Yes, I see..."

63 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:54 pm

[58] yes! it's brutal. for some ungodly reason, i woke up EARLY!!! like, before noon. (i must've slept too late yesterday.) i'm terribly upset about this travesty and i smell a nap later on. gotta rest up for beer! : )

64 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:55 pm

wow, Johnny puts the fear of God in Doc.

65 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:55 pm

[62] My 5 year old nephew recently spent time on a nude beach. Don't ask. But he noticed that the woman had what looked like what? Hint: He's in the Yanks booth. lol.

66 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:56 pm

[62] nice!

yeah, Tex!

do it again, A-Rod!!!

67 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:57 pm

oh christ.

70 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:58 pm

cone is wacky huh?

71 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:59 pm

M's got 1 back, cut the defecit in half. 2-1.

72 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:59 pm

Opportunity blown. : ( Cano, C'mon Just fucking once!!

73 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 4, 2009 1:59 pm

Who is this team that's getting a few hits of Cy Halladay?

74 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:00 pm

[62] Not to mention prevalent baseball jargon involving balls inside, outside, high and low, "good wood," "two-hole," "five-hole," "cleanup," "the squeeze play," etc, including of course considering Wang's start today... the "DP!"

: )

75 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:00 pm

bollocks. total wasted opportunity. that one's on Alex. we should be up 3-2...

76 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:02 pm

[74] yeah, "up & in", "diving headfirst into home". there's lots of 'em...

77 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:02 pm

To pick up the conversation I was having the other day. It always seems that Robbie hits a groundball just to the left of the 2b bag with runners on. or he pulls it to first.

78 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:02 pm

Ofer last 17 with RISP for Cano. b double o.

79 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:05 pm

I hope Wang goes deep.

Yikes. Once Freud is on your brain, baseball is just a sexual cesspool.

80 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:06 pm

I'd realy like to see Wang prevent Rolen from scoring this frame...

81 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:06 pm

Woohoo!

82 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:07 pm

yeah, Wang!

44 pitches thru 4.

9.52

83 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:07 pm

Riding the pine.

84 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:07 pm

44 through 4 innings!
Wang is making a game of this one, for sure. I rate this game a toss-up (and not just because of the score).

85 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:08 pm

wang looks good. and no this comment has nothing to do with y'alls side conversation.

86 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:10 pm

Yay Po!

87 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:10 pm

[85] yeah, i was about to say that about young Tommy Hanson, who's throwing nicely for the Bravos today, but was worried about the connotation! : ~

88 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:11 pm

like i said before:

Posada ROCKS!!!

89 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:11 pm

Holy Smokes. Posada crushed that one.

90 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:11 pm

Chalk one up for the receivers!

91 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:11 pm

92 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:12 pm

93 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:13 pm

[92] i tried to start that chant here in Atlanta, during the last game. didn't work. : (

94 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:15 pm

someone needs to tell Kay that people have been able to watch games on their computer for years.

95 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:16 pm

[93] bummer, that'd be so cool!

96 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:20 pm

Happy "America, FUCK YEAH!" Day, everybody!

Good to wake up and see us up 3-2.

97 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:20 pm

25 consecutive scoreless innings for young Tommy Hanson. he's fun to watch.

98 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:21 pm

Nice to see CMW pitching well today.

99 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:21 pm

55 through 5 (let's see if I've beat thelarmis on this one).

100 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:22 pm

GREAT inning Wang!

55 thru 5

another great inning for Wang!

111 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:29 pm

112 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:29 pm

Alright, Cano. Please don't make me scare the dog.

117 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:31 pm

Dear Joey Joe Joe

Hitting weak, shitty grounders on the 1st pitch isn't "bad luck", it's lousy hitting.

Thanks

Everybody

118 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:32 pm

nice, just opened facebook for kicks and an old friend has a pick of her kid at today's game.

Branyan having a long AB, man on 3rd, 1out. man on 1st, too...

Lead off doubles with a one run lead are unacceptable!

121 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:33 pm

122 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:34 pm

134 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:41 pm

did Wang just throw 1 pitch after the homer?

is he hurt?

ugh.

135 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:43 pm

Wang is apparently hurt. The trainer came running out, and next thing you know, Wang's leaving with him, and they're signaling to the bullpen.

I didn't see anything wrong with Wang, but obviously, something is.

136 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:43 pm

What happened? Girardi yanks Wang? (oops)

137 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:43 pm

I am close to jumping off the Wang bandwagon...he still hasn't come close to maintaining his velocity, which was the whole basis for his success.

Meanwhile, Girardi has put his stamp on this game with his stubborn refusal to accept reality and move Cano out of the 5th slot. His three futile ABs have allowed Halladay to keep control of the game. You can't really blame Cano for his shortcoming, but you can definitely blame Girardi for his incompetence.

138 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:44 pm

I HATE Saturday afternoon games. Why isn't Fox showing this?

139 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:44 pm

[135] oy.

David Robertson in to keep Wang's ERA at 9.64

140 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:44 pm

[137] The problem is that Girardi is satan. And let's face it, I don't like satan.

141 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:46 pm

Whatever happened, it was sudden and unexpected. Posada was the one who noticed something was wrong. He ran out to the mound. Girardi and the training came running out, too. And there was no argument, no nothing. They signaled to the pen shortly after they got to the mound, and Wang left.

142 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:46 pm

[140] i quite like Satan.

(not girardi, but satan himself. cool dude. we're tight!)

143 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:47 pm

i love it when relievers come in and promptly walk the first batter they face. really puts me at ease.

144 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:47 pm

I'd imagine that Aceves isn't available. Also, if he wasn't being used as a one inning type guy, this would be the perfect spot for Hughes.

145 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:49 pm

[142] jazz was the devil's music before metal showed up, so you got those bases covered ...

meanwhile, Robertson is not making me so happy.

146 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:50 pm

With Halladay able to go at least 2 more innings, another run is pretty much the game.

147 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:51 pm

[142] yeah, he gets a bad rap.

148 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:51 pm

Yikes! 2 walks? Robertson can strike out every out, but he's no good if he walks guys. Oy,

149 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:52 pm

Halladay has 79 pitches thru 5. We 2 decent innings, we should see the BP in the 8th and 9th.

150 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:54 pm

[145] yes, i am all over Satan! if i knew how to fix cars, i'd be the Satanic Mechanic!

Hanson's scoreless streak is over.

151 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:55 pm

The "slumping" Rios. This game of baseball drives me nuckin' futs.

152 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:55 pm

bollocks.

153 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 2:59 pm

I can live with the single, but 2 walks and a wild pitch really stinks.

Gardner not turning his back to the plexiglas that time.

157 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:01 pm

How good was Gardy's catch?

158 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:01 pm

[157] Very good running catch, but one he should make.

159 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:02 pm

[157] it was a speed catch. he got a good jump and blazed to it. so it was nice, but not spectacular in that it didn't require a somersault or backflip.

160 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:03 pm

This is where Halladay will cut through the Yankees like a surgeon unless they really have some good ABs.

161 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:03 pm

Sox get 1st and 3rd with NO outs, but fail to score. Still 2-2.

[161] championship teams don't fail to score with 1st and 3rd and no outs. Time to clean house!

163 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:10 pm

It would really be nice if the Yankees can figure out a way to beat Halladay. I can't remember the last time they beat him.

164 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:12 pm

BaBaBruney!

Well, at least that horrible mustache is gone.

Heh, Kay just called them the "Philthys"

That'll be $.25, please!

165 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:12 pm

Using Bruney here is absurd. At most, he'll give you one inning, which then means you have to turn to Tomko. At worst, he'll do what we are seeing now.

166 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:17 pm

wow ... that's amazing

Pujols with the bases loaded this year, 6 for 7, 4hrs, 20 RBI.

DAMN.

167 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:19 pm

I watched Albert Pujols' bases loaded ab last night on the MLB network. They were down 3-0 and the talking heads were saying they should walk him b/c a grandslam was basically a foregone conclusion if he got a pitch to hit. He got one. He hit it out. Incredible.

168 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:20 pm

pujols is a beast. My friend who is a Cards friend fears that the Yanks will sign him away from St Louis. But we don't have room for him really.

169 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:23 pm

[166] Pujols hit a salami last night. I gotta say, I think it was managerial ineptitude. Putting in Weathers was nuts. Pujols was hitting .500 against Weathers. Baker had a groundball pitcher in the pen who would have been a much better choice with the bases loaded.

The funniest thing is that Baker said he didn't want to put Rhodes in because Pujols was 2 for 4 against him. So put in Weathers, who was 9 for 18.

181 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:28 pm

[174] Yeah. He's had shoulder problems in the past, so this is worrisome.

Hopefully he'll be okay. And they'll give him lots of time to rehab in AAA, rather than rushing him back. He did look good today, but he still didn't have the velocity he used to. I gotta wonder if this shoulder strain is partly due to rushing him back.

182 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:28 pm

[178] HAHA! He should have walked Damon.

183 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:29 pm

[181] could be. I'd like to have him for the stretch. At least we know that if he goes on DL he can do a full rehab stint this time. Problem is that Hughes hasn't gone more than an inning or two in weeks.

holy fucking crap.

hughes is out?!?!?!?

WHY?!?!?!

Mo seems to be pitching a lot lately...

222 The Hawk   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:49 pm

This game has been instructive. I'm a Wang fan, but I'm starting to tire of him. Just when he looks about to turn the corner (for the third or fourth time), he gets hurt again? We'll see if it's serious, but if it is, Wang is starting to give me an A-Rodian headache.

Also, I favor Melky over Gardner. Neither is great, but Girardi to this point has done a good job of going with the hot hand. However, they've helped in that they were passing the baton back and forth effectively. Right now, though, they both look pretty bad. Gardner looks terrible - again.

223 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:49 pm

Incredible...Hughes and Mo are now likely unavailable tomorrow and if this game goes long the chances of Tomko being used has increased. This is very short sighted bullpen management.

224 Just Fair   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:49 pm

[221] Instead of 100 innings this year, they've changed it to 100 pitches.

225 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:49 pm

girardi is a moron. hughes needs to get stretched out if he's starting in 5 days. this is ludicrous...

226 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:51 pm

[221] WHY???

because Hughesy now pitches the 8th.

that's his INNING.

see, INNING.

Mo pitches the 9th.

Everybody gets put in a teeny, tiny box and that's how they gets used.

227 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:51 pm

Girardi has made a handful of tactical errors in this game alone.

228 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:52 pm

234 The Hawk   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:52 pm

[230] even so, he should have started the 9th. this is pure insanity!!!!

238 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 3:54 pm

Rivera's cutter looks a little short. I think that has more to do with his workload than the tie game, but either way it really made no sense to use him in this inning when Hughes was perfectly capable of another inning.

284 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:28 pm

The Sox got 4 hits today. Lowell is out, but they should still be hitting. But their O is beginning to sag. Youk has slowed a little, but is still awesome. JD about the same. Bay going down. Actually, Tek and Nick Green are doing damage. The Sox are vulnerable.

285 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:29 pm

[279] I am not sure, but if you look at the Yankees production by slot in the batting order, it's hard not to pinpoint Cano batting 5th as the key reason why the Yankees offense is inefficient relative to their overall production.

Besides batting Cano 5th and not PHing for Gardner in the 8th, Girardi's bullpen management has the potential to be his worst error in this game if it goes extras and Tomko is summoned. Then, not only would they have lost today's game, but would be facing a Joba start with a rundown bullpen.

286 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:30 pm

Great play by Gardner. Flashing the speed today in the field.

290 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:31 pm

[283] Coke doesn't seem to handle that second inning as well as the first. I have a feeling we'll be seeing tomko is there is an 11th inning.

291 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:31 pm

[286] both 8 out of 10s. Good plays, especially that second one. Mostly speed plays where instincts + speed got him to the ball.

292 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:31 pm

[286] That was a great sliding catch only made possible by his speed. Unlike the first, that was more on the spectacular side.

293 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:31 pm

[288] ah! forgot he was with us... : ~

294 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:32 pm

oh, jorgie...

it's Swish...

296 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:33 pm

[294] It actually looked like he broke back on that, so maybe it was a case of his speed making up for poor instincts, which is kind of how I view him in general.

297 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:34 pm

Looks like Wally Bell has a BBQ to attend because he has gone from a hitters ump to a pitchers ump.

298 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:34 pm

So.. one great catch and one spectacular catch? Sounds kinda awesome. Do we agree he is a full notch better then Melky on D in CF?

299 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:34 pm

I'll laugh if this game goes past the FOX Blackout and we get to see it on YES!

Just what the Yankees need with no days off between now and the ASB, extras innings...

*sigh*

300 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:36 pm

jesus christ. this is painful.

302 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:36 pm

One out until Tomko time.

303 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:37 pm

What a disgusting inning.

304 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:37 pm

[302] noooooo! please no Tikki Tikki Tomko. i think he fell down a well !!! ; )

305 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:38 pm

So lose 2 in a row, at Fenway, to Seattle! William... can I get a 'that's just unacceptable'?

306 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:39 pm

This has the feel of a Mo-tie game let down. He has also pitched a lot recently, so it would have been nice to get away with using him. Girardi just doesn’t have any feel for managing a game.

So funny.

Fire Girardi!

307 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:39 pm

bummer

308 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:39 pm

SOX lose 2 in a row....

309 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:40 pm

Cokey still in.

Burning Hughes for just 1 inning looking dumber and dumber ...

310 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:40 pm

i really wish Alex didn't foul out to 1st w/ 1-out and a runner on 3rd earlier in the game...

Hughes should've thrown 2 innings...

Cokey still in!

311 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:40 pm

Coke for a second inning is very dangerous, but made necessary by Girardi's awful managing. This game is quickly heading toward a loss simply because the Yankees are so poorly managed.

312 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:40 pm

[309] get outta my brain! ; )

313 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:41 pm

[311] still better than Tomko...

314 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:41 pm

[305] King Felix pitched one of those games, so they are only on the hook for one.

315 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:42 pm

...

316 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:42 pm

[309] Absolutely. Girardi's complete lack of foresight has put the Yankees in this position. Coke hasn't been used for length is such a long time that you are basically crossing your fingers with him.

317 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:42 pm

[313] no doubt about that ...

318 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:42 pm

and there it is. walking the leadoff man.

Schteeve doesn't seem to be 'round these parts any longer, so i'll take care of the self-immolation bit and go light myself on fire. i happen to quite like fire (and satan).

319 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:42 pm

wow, that mcnair news is obviously disturbing. the game is grating a bit too

320 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:43 pm

[313] That's what I mean by "made necessary".

321 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:43 pm

This game is quickly heading toward a loss simply because the Yankees are so poorly managed.

Riiiiiight. Five runs against Halladay and it's still the manager's fault because the bullpen hasn't given up a run in 4 2/3rds.

That makes sense.

322 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:44 pm

[318] a fitting combo. and very July 4th of you.

323 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:44 pm

[321] please don't start with all that. this game is rough enough...

324 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:44 pm

[323] ditto

325 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:45 pm

"I don't need no shades" that was awesome.

326 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:46 pm

[321] the 'pen has been pretty darn good. i really wish they'd throw Hughes for 2 innings at a time. i wonder why Joe won't do that when the situation screams for it...

327 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:46 pm

[325] Cone was channeling Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

328 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:46 pm

Big steal by Wells.

329 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:47 pm

[316] "Coke hasn’t been used for length is such a long time that you are basically crossing your fingers with him."

Coke pitched two innings on June 25th in Atlanta...

330 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:47 pm

Great job by Cokey...now they'd better score because there is no way they'll send him out for a 3rd inning.

331 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:48 pm

20 pitches, 2 innings. VERY nice work Cokey!

332 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:48 pm

@ 323, 324

Yeah, I'm the problem. You guys never get sick of the Girardi nonsense irrespective of actual facts?

333 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:48 pm

Coke for a second inning is very dangerous, but made necessary by Girardi’s awful managing.

Wrong again.

How many times can one guy look like a fool in one thread?

334 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:49 pm

[332] i think it's more the one-sided attacking nature. it's just a bad vibe, that's all.

335 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:49 pm

[329] But only twice all season.

336 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:50 pm

So five scoreless innings from the bullpen?

Awful, awful managing.

Fire Girardi!

337 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:50 pm

[332] i ignore it. it works. but you fuel it.

338 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:50 pm

[333] every post you make attacking him, makes you look like that. it's tired. you know a TON about baseball. just post that singularly and we'll all be better off from it! : )

339 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:50 pm

[334] Alex had a talk with him, so his time is running out. In the meantime, just keep ignoring.

340 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:51 pm

ugh. not a good start there, Gritner.

[329] hey, i was there! : )

341 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:51 pm

@ 334

And see, a bad vibe to me is bullshit being peddled regardless of the facts. To each their own, but I'd have nothing to say if the bullshit stopped.

342 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:52 pm

[339] i usually do. perhaps i've been channeling Satan too much today! ; )

343 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:52 pm

@ 339

More bullshit! No, Alex most certainly didn't.

No, you're just lying out of your ass, huh?

Fire Girardi!!111!!

344 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:53 pm

[342] I wont embarrass him by sharing the details, but I've been assured that if he can't "behave" something will be done to remedy the problem.

345 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:54 pm

Come on Damon...save us from Tomko time.

346 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:54 pm

dammit, jetes.

c'mon johnny. one more Yankee Doodle Dandy!

347 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:56 pm

@ 344

What a fucking liar you are. And now, you're supposedly sharing the details even as you say you're not?

Nope, never have gotten a talking to. But, you, you've actually had to have the moderators defend your annoying "right" to post.

348 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:56 pm

damon sitting on 199 homers...

349 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:56 pm

Uh oh...time for Tomko?

350 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:56 pm

From Pedro:

Coke: one run on five hits in his last 15.2 innings with 16 Ks.

351 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:57 pm

oy yuy yuy.

352 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:57 pm

What, the manger can't rallying the troops!? Where's the Animal House speech?

Fire Girardi!

353 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:58 pm

I don't want to overlook this game just yet (I guess Tomko can have a clean inning), but who is going to come out of the pen tomorrow? You'd have to think Hughes, Mo and Coke are all toast, which leaves Aceves and?

354 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:58 pm

Yup, the manager's fault for using the last guy in the pen who doesn't even belong on the roster.

Fire Girardi.

355 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:59 pm

Hopefully the shadows can help Tomko, who does have a pretty good fastball.

356 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:59 pm

I have ZERO confidence in Tomko here.

357 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 4:59 pm

here's tomko...

358 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:00 pm

If I was Posada I would strictly feature the fastball for strikes. Tomko's off speed is really bad.

359 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:00 pm

Share the "details", liar.

I've never, ever, ever gotten a "talking to" here. Because realize I'm right.

360 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:00 pm

[335] If Coke can't face this lineup for two innings as well as he's pitched recently, "stepping it up" for the team when needed, considering he was a starter last year throwing more than 100 innings, then he's not really major league material, is he?

I hope you are kidding about Coke pitching a couple of innings here and there... really.

This guy is hardly a Marte type lefty after all.

361 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:00 pm

[356] Glad you showed up...

362 NickL   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:01 pm

chance of Tomko's giving up a jack in this inning?

363 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:02 pm

Hey Bum Rush, cease and desist. Immediately. In point of fact, I sent you an e-mail last week about your behavior. I never heard back from you. I used the e-mail you have registered here. If you did not get it, let me know because I would like to have a private discussion.

364 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:02 pm

[360] I agree with you about Coke, but that's not how he has been used. He has mostly been a one inning pitcher, who often is called on to get only 1 or 2 outs. It's tough to then ask him to give you two clean innings, but thankfully he was able to do it.

365 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:03 pm

Lind is VERY dangerous here. I'd really like to see Tomko pitch around him here.

366 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:04 pm

@ 356

Can you set the record straight about said "talking to".

Seeing as I never actually have gotten anything of the sort.

I know full well I step over the line at times. But the utter bullshit has no place. I'll defend that position until I'm banned. It's one thing to take an unpopular position. It's quite another to lie through your teeth while doing so.

367 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:04 pm

struck him out! whaddya know. 1 more dude...

368 NickL   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:04 pm

Pitching Coke two innings was Girardi's way of saying "Ah, shit, I shoulda gotten another inning out of Hughes"--two from Hughes would've been ideal, but at least Tomko was postponed....

Lind is the guy you worry about.

369 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:04 pm

Yikes!

370 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:04 pm

371 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:05 pm

372 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:05 pm

@ 363

Nope, didn't get it. I don't check that email.

Go ahead and ban me. It's your loss. Especially when the alternative is that bullshit - day after day.

373 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:05 pm

Brett Tomko! whoda thunk it.

alright "Bats" - awaken!!! there are Canadian moths on the field. have at 'em!!!

374 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:06 pm

[368] As it worked out, we'd now be in Tomko time one way or the other, but it still would have made a ton of sense to have Hughes give you two innings, especially because he likely wont pitch tomorrow anyway.

375 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:06 pm

Another scoreless inning from the pen.

Fire Girardi!

376 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:06 pm

[368] and at least they have the same first name! maybe he got confused! : ~

377 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:07 pm

366) Bum, William is not lying. I did contact you. Please shoot me your e-mail. Again, perhaps I used the wrong one but I did reach out to you this past week re: your comment behavior.

Regardless, let's just dead this antagonism between you and william for the day. It's a holiday and not the time for petty fighting.

Send me an e-mail (alexbelth@aol.com) and we'll handle this behind the scenes between ourselves. Thanks.

378 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:08 pm

383 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:09 pm

ugh. Robbie, it's time. don't make an out!!!

384 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:09 pm

Seems like the Jays have no fear of Cano. Does Girardi ask Cano to bunt? What would that do to his confidence?

385 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:10 pm

Rob just has to bunt here. It's so obvious...

386 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:10 pm

What is Cano thinking here? I wish I was in his head.

387 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:10 pm

Oh, he has to bunt, William. I am Mr Bunt Hater, but this is a no-brainer.

388 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:10 pm

[385] Cano isn't a great bunter...I don't know.

389 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:11 pm

Okay, at 2-0 they could take the bunt off.

390 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:11 pm

wow, 2 balls outta the chute...

391 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:11 pm

I'll be damned. This strategy is sure working well! Not in the expected way.

392 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:11 pm

whoa, wait. 3rd pitch is like right down broadway on gamecast. hmmm...

393 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:11 pm

Send me an e-mail (alexbelth@aol.com) and we’ll handle this behind the scenes between ourselves.

Between "ourselves". When the lying sack of shit is the one revealing said email? So as not to "embarass" me?

Hahahhaha.

Sorry, man, we have nothing to talk about. If you're going to defend his right to post whatever bullshit he wants to peddle, then you're going to have to ban me. I've loved this community for too long to watch that go unchallenged. You and your co-writers do great work here. But the bullshit is exactly that.

394 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:12 pm

What the????

395 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:12 pm

401 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:13 pm

Ok, I am sorry, but I don't want to hear Girardi blame Cano for this. This epic failure is squarely on the manager's shoulders. You have Cano batting 5th, but then don't trust him to hit. You also can't assume Cano is savy enough to take 3-0. This has to be communicated.

402 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:13 pm

He must have missed the sign, right? Because Teix was running back toward second base.

403 PJ   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:13 pm

[364] It has to do with his adjusting to beginning this season as a reliever first the first time in his career. Once he was prepared mentally and physically enough to throw from day to day, which he is at the moment by virtue of the consistent command he is enjoying now, he can go longer from time to time as needed, like today. He has said as much in post game interviews recently.

Thelarmis seeing him throw in person didn't hurt! : )

Extra innings are part of MLB. They'll get through it. It's just a shame it came this early during this 10-game stretch that not only includes a day off, but also a west coast road trip.

Hughes can go an inning or two if needed tomorrow to spell Coke and Mo, as can Aceves (more than one), Robertson, and Bruney.

404 Bum Rush   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:13 pm

Worse, it's the same exact fucking bullshit day after day, week after week, month after month. It's the same insanity, man!

Hughes can go an inning or two if needed tomorrow to spell Coke and Mo

Actually, that's not clear. this is the first time Hughes has gone back-to-back, I'm pretty sure they'll want to avoid pitching him 3 days in a row.

419 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:20 pm

[414] i can see Jorgie NOT acting too kindly to pie in the face. what was his reaction?

[402] yikes. that's just ridiculous. robbie's head is elsewhere. maybe the ASB will give him a good rest...

Aceves is available tomorrow.

421 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:20 pm

Guys, Bum Rush just pushed my hand, I'm sorry to say. He didn't want to handle this rationally. He all but dared me to ban him. Whether he looks at the e-mail he registered with, I have sent him two e-mails (now I know why they were not returned) over the past few months regarding his behavior.

But his last few comments here were the last straw. I have removed ability to post.

We like arguments here but we have to remain a friendly bar. Bum Rush repeatedly pushed it over the line. His disputes with williamny23 became too personal.

This is only the second time we've had to ban a commentor and it's no fun. We valued Bum Rush's passion but cannot tolerate his behavior.

422 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:21 pm

[421] Thank you.

423 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:21 pm

[419] he was alright. But he definitely was trying to avoid it. Joba had to distract him big time.

Looks like Robbie's struggle with RISP have gotten deep into his head.

424 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:22 pm

[421] Thanks Alex. I agreed with his criticisms but not the way he handled them. It was the right decision.

425 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:23 pm

[421] there's no reason to apologize to us (or at least me), it needed to happen.

426 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:23 pm

[421] That's cool, Alex. Everyone was pretty tolerant of him (esp. William who most definitely took the high road), but I don't think anyone's going to miss the dude.

427 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:24 pm

[423] Yeah, they kind of double teamed Jorge with pies. Cool.

428 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:24 pm

[421] thanking you.

the other was Rob Gee...right?

429 thelarmis   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:32 pm

Manny:

It was Ramirez's seventh of the season and 534th of his career, tying Jimmie Foxx for 16th on the all-time list. Up next is Mickey Mantle with 536.

430 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:34 pm

Yes, Rob Gee, that's right.

Anyhow, hope everyone has a good holiday, grillin or being with family.

Good win!

431 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:37 pm

[430] you too Alex. At least we know you'll be in a good mood after the win. And I hope everyone else here is too. Enjoy the day folks! :)

432 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:38 pm

I heard the end of the game on XM and I'm posting on my phone.

I'm damn glad we won but what kind of strategy was that bunting Cano in a 3-0 count with two on and nobody out? Even John Sterling recognized that as a horseshit play.

And THAT is why I'm disenchanted with Girardi as the manager.

Maybe the Yanks can win it all despite that kind of bad move, after all Barry Switzer won a super bowl because of the talent of the '95 Cowboys, but I don't like it.

And if Wang is going to miss a start, and that seems apparent even if the injury is nothing, why not get Phil 2 innings there (since he'll get the next 4 games off anyway)?

433 randym77   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:41 pm

Girardi says they'll discuss what to do about a starter tonight. He said neither Hughes nor Aceves is in a position to start.

Wang has a shoulder strain and bursitis, and will need rest.

434 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 4, 2009 5:41 pm

[421] I am sorry it had to come to that, and the irony is probably if I didn't ignore him he would have spread the "wealth", but it's probably for the best, not only for the Banter, but for Bum. Instead of being so obsessed with me, maybe he can now find a place to offer a worthwhile contribution. Hopefully, this has been a lesson learned.

Banning is generally a miserable thing to have to do, but when someone dares you, and screams 'your loss' and keeps violating, among other things, a posted rules of order that includes language ... he changes the room too much.

Also, just to go on the record here, I posted a few days back asking Alex or Cliff to look into this after an ugly game thread (with a WIN, yet) and Alex REPLIED with a post that he'd emailed Bum Rush ... so that had zero to do with william 'revealing' anything. It was made public, and Bum Rush, who reads these threads would have seen that, even if he denied getting the email. His screaming 'liar' and 'bullshit' on that one really do cross all kinds of lines.

But leave that. He's banned, and I regret it had to happen but am not sorry it did. I tend to think the Boo Girardi then Boo Cashman are BOTH overused here, but that's me.

On a more cheerful note, MUCH more cheerful, we won, Sox lost, Cano lives to line drive another day. I'll be interested to know if the bunt was taken off on 3-0.

AND I have a nickname to propose! I HOPE no one has come up with this because I like it so much, in an age of lousy nicknames.

Ready, Banterers, I propose:

The Sultan of Bruney!

Accepting cheers and applause and pouring cyberdrinks at Bronx Banter.

Has anyone heard a report that says the bunt was really on? If the bunt was on, then yes, it's stupid. Very stupid. And why was Teixeira moving in the wrong direction when Cano laid down the bunt?? The bunt wasn't bad -- it wasn't great, but it certainly wasn't bad -- but Teix had no chance because he got an anti-jump.
My bet is that Rob missed the sign. The bunt was off. That's why Teix wasn't in on it.

[433] I wouldn't be completely against a stopgap measure for one start. With the ASB coming up, the Yankees have some time to figure out the long-term solution. I don't think 3 innings from Hughes or Aceves is the best answer.

[432] Given Girardi's reaction, I am pretty sure Cano did that on his own.

[436] Girardi said Cano "misunderstood" what was asked. You know I feel about that response.

[439] i commend you for taking the high road with the Bum situation. that whole thing was a "bummer" (eh eh eh!). i, for one, am glad it's done. Thanks, Alex!

1 Game back, people!

Waldman said that Mitre seemed likely for the start ...

Yeah I'm sorry it had to come to that with Bum Rush. I gave him a wide berth after our exchange the other night.

There's a guy at the Alabama football tailgate that I know that everyone calls "angry guy" (mainly cause he gets drunk and screams at people; last year he screamed at my kid). Bum seemed like an online version of Angry Guy.

[441] so did Petey...

444 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 6:07 pm

[441] was just going to say that Pete Abe says the same thing. I know nothing about Mitre except that he has been not very good in a few short stints in the majors. ANy thoughts?

445 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 4, 2009 6:13 pm

Why wouldn't they let Phil pitch? Is this because of phils inning limit or the fact that he's been relieving for awhile and might need to be stretched out?

Mitre. Meh! Isn't there anyone else who could pitch? What about the ghost of Kei igawawful?

446 seamus   ~  Jul 4, 2009 6:16 pm

[445] he isn't stretched out. Upon reflection that seems like the right decision. Especially since Wang should be back.

447 RIYank   ~  Jul 4, 2009 6:18 pm

[445] The latter -- must be stretched out. He's only thrown 49 innings so far, so there's no way he's going to hit the limit this year. No way. In fact, a lot of us are annoyed at the way he's being used now because at this rate his inning count this year will be so low he will be on the same limit again next year. What a freaking waste.

I honestly think that right this moment they should be working out how Hughes will be the fifth starter for the rest of the season. Okay, spot start from Mire, whatever. But he should be put back on the path to being a starter.
And quick, before "He's the Yankees answer to the burning 8th inning question!" meme gathers too much momentum...

448 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 4, 2009 8:32 pm

[447] I agree with you. Rest Phil until the spot comes up again and have him start and pitch 2 or 3 innings and then use Mitre or Aceves. Then let him go 3 innings the next time around, then 4-5 innings and so on. Maybe I'm too ambitious on the stretch out though.
