AJ Burnett likes to mash pies in his teammates’ grill. Let’s hope he gives them reason to return the favor this afternoon.

How can Burnett get a face pie? I mean, he can't get a walk-off hit until the World Series now that IL is finished.

No-hitter? Perfect game?

*shrug*

2 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Jul 22, 2009 12:45 pm

He'd definitely get a pie for a no-no.

3 Raf   ~  Jul 22, 2009 12:51 pm

[1] If something happened where the Yanks had to move the DH to the field, it's possible :)

4 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:08 pm

[1] 21 k's. : D

5 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:16 pm

Nice Cap'n!

6 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:18 pm

I noticed Derek has learned with respect to the O's OF arms...

: )

7 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:18 pm

I am a bit surprised that Ransom didn't get the start at SS after Jeter came up limping yesterday.

8 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:19 pm

Woohoo A-Rod!

9 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:19 pm

Every ball has been hit hard.

10 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:20 pm

It seems the Score Truck arrived early today!

: )

11 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:22 pm

[10] Day-game-after-night-game score truck?

12 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:26 pm

C'mom, Cano. A simple laced line drive to the gap to clear the bases is all I ask.

13 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:28 pm

Good, better to be lucky than

14 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:29 pm

How can they be a hit? I want what the official scorer is on.

15 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:30 pm

Come on, Gardy, there's room for everyone in score truck!

16 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:31 pm

Woohoo on the bat-around!

17 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:32 pm

The little steps Brett needs to get onto the score truck malfunctioned.

18 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:35 pm

Now that the score truck is being parked for a brief moment, the Sox have acquired Adam LaRoche.

Does this mean Youkilis to 3B, Lowell to the bench - or is it just so they have a better backup option at 1B than Kotsay? That's an expensive backup.

19 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:35 pm

Shoot, just remembered the game is on this afternoon. I hope I didn't miss all of the score truck.

20 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:36 pm

Old Yanks Fan said this the other night, but NYS may set some sort of record for singles off the wall.

21 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:38 pm

Sox traded for Adam LaRoche. What are the odds he hist .330/.400/.500 for them the rest of the way?

22 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:43 pm

Yikes, that was close.

23 ed   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:45 pm

Last inning, it looked like Berken was getting a wide strike zone. Is that right, or is that just how Gamecast made it look?

24 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:50 pm

[21] Hey, I noticed! [18] =)

He's a notorious second-half performer (pre-ASB, career: .252/.326/.447; post-ASB, career: .296/.357/.544), but all that work was done in the NL, so who knows?

25 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:50 pm

Wow @ Michael Kay's Lowenbrau reference with the former O's outfielder from yesteryear...

No shame at all!

Pathetic!

26 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:53 pm

Our outfield sucks. boooooo

27 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:53 pm

Spanky McSkittles strikes again!

Asshat!

28 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:56 pm

Damon just intimidated a runner with his arm??

29 ms october   ~  Jul 22, 2009 1:57 pm

i like when the score truck shows up early

i don't like missing yankee games because i am at work - that was a nice advantage of "working" at home and working on a dissertation

30 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:00 pm

[29] Yep...I'm "working from home" today.

31 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:03 pm

I digress. WOW.

32 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:03 pm

Well looky what I found....

33 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:03 pm

Nice catch and all, but "Look what I found!"

Pfft!

34 The Hawk   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:04 pm

And there's Nick Swisher's fielding in a nutshell.

35 The Hawk   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:04 pm

And there's Nick Swisher's fielding in a nutshell.

36 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:05 pm

If Burnett's rules for Operation Dessert Storm are flexible, he'll pie-face Swish between innings here.

37 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:05 pm

Dang all Gamechannel says is "Wigginton flied out". No excitement at all.

38 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:06 pm

[34] [35] Deja vu...

: )

39 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:07 pm

Hmm...score truck ran out of gas after the first inning?

40 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:08 pm

[39] Woohoo Po!

41 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:08 pm

[39] I speak too soon.

42 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:08 pm

Hip-Hip...

43 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:10 pm

Not so long ago, if a starter gave up five within the first three frames, he was out of there...

I'm just sayin'.

44 The Hawk   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:12 pm

[38] Man it usually won't let you double post like that ... I only clicked once.

Ah that's what they all say.

45 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:13 pm

[44] Heh heh, Andre!

46 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:14 pm

Double dang. Actually had to go and do some work, and missed the score truck again.

47 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:14 pm

So, will interviews with college football coaches and athletic directors be a permanent feature of broadcasts for the rest of the season?

48 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:15 pm

nice to wake up to 4-0. now 5-0.

i hated watching LaRoche here in Atl. he's slow as hell, non-descript and i loathe his stance. that said, he's a 2nd half player and might do well at the Fens. he won't deal well w/ the media and hype there though...

i've still got tons of catching up to do on baseball news...

49 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:16 pm

Diane -

if you're here on this thread at all, this link's for you - you'll love it! i left it at your NOTD post, as well. of course, everyone else can check it out also, it's cool! : )

50 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:16 pm

So when are they going to announce St. Joseph School's football games at The Stadium?

Feh!

51 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:16 pm

Can we expect a presser regarding the 2032 "Steinbrenner Bowl" ?

52 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:16 pm

ooh, a leadoff walk just for me. thanks, AJ! : /

53 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:17 pm

[51] hey, you're here - great!

please see [49] - thanks.

54 Horace Clarke Era   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:20 pm

Re 5 runs 3 innings outa there ... yes, if there's someone BEHIND you. O's actually have a promising young batting order for next couple of years but the pitching is scary-bad, starters AND bullpen. Suspect this may be Berken's Last Stand for now. But not sure who they have in AAA.

55 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:22 pm

Burnett is doing it the hard way today.

56 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:25 pm

so, this AJ guy seems to be a nice fella - likes to hand out free passes to the opposing players quite often! : ~

57 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:28 pm

now, that variety of leadoff walk, i like!!!

58 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:28 pm

Gardy on 1B!

: O

59 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:30 pm

3 ab's and 3 pitches for Jeter. Hot date tonight?

60 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:30 pm

Is Jeter in a hurry today?

61 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:30 pm

Terrible jump for Gritty.

62 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:31 pm

That must be why Gardner hasn't been starting lately...

: )

63 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:33 pm

Man... it looks like the Sox gave nothing away for LaRoche.

64 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:33 pm

This has certainly not been a highlight reel game for ol' Gardy.

65 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:33 pm

For you hardcore fans.... Sox on ESPN tonight.

66 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:35 pm

[49]

Many thanks .... I DID already know that Geddy had that collection and had donated it .... very cool!

67 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:36 pm

[65] if by "hardcore" you mean ESPN is airing naked peephole footage of Chris Berman, I'll pass. Otherwise, I might check out a couple innings of the game.

68 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:37 pm

[65] i'll pass. i'll be teaching, then practicing, then enjoying slices!

[66] cool.

69 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:40 pm

[65] I have another term in mind for those who would watch a Red Sox game on ESRSN "featuring" any combination of Berman, Phillips, and Morgan...

: )

70 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:40 pm

Wow, Kay and Singleton are really bored, and it's only the 5th inning.

71 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:40 pm

Today is the 2nd anniversary of Mike Coolbaugh's death. He was the 1st base coach struck by a batted ball. :-(

72 ms october   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:42 pm

[70] they were bored yesterday too.
it's time for coney to be back in the booth.

any quick insights on the game so far?

73 Raf   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:44 pm

[63] Mainly because the Sox are doing the Pirates a favor by taking on his salary.

74 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:45 pm

[72] Me? not really. AJ has been sloppy but a bit lucky. After the first inning, when the Yanks hit almost everything hard, the offense has sort of disappeared. Lots of short ABs. I get the sense that everyone is thinking about the next series, or at least about their dinner plans.

75 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:46 pm

Swisher flashing that gold glove form.

76 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:46 pm

Eat your heart out, Abreu.

77 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:46 pm

nother nice catch by Swish. That's two today that Sheff and Abreu probably would not have made

78 Raf   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:47 pm

With the way guys are swinging early in the count, you'd think it was getaway day, but the Yanks have Oakland coming in next...

79 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:48 pm

I would love to see Hughes for two or three innings today...but I don't really have the energy on this lazy afternoon to mount much of an argument.

80 ms october   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:51 pm

[74] thanks mp

81 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:51 pm

I'm going to my fifth game of the year Saturday. It will be the 4TH time Pettitte is starting (sigh).

82 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:53 pm

[79] maybe we should give Melancon a chance to pitch. or Bruney...

83 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:53 pm

And now the ump expands the strike zone...everyone is in a hurry!

84 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:54 pm

[81] RYI is with a few family members there today, Diane.

I don't have an accurate count, but I know that our Banterer Attendance Winning Percentage Factor (BAWPF) is soaring at the moment...

: )

85 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:54 pm

[82] Probably. I guess I meant more generally...since he was not used yesterday, I hold out hope that the plan is to employ him for two innings an appearance, to lay the groundwork for a possible re-entry into the rotation.

86 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:55 pm

[84] RIY, too...

87 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:57 pm

It's quite remarkable...I'm pretty sure that Kay hasn't talked about the game once in six innings. Then again, when Kay talks about the game, it's not necessarily worth hearing.

88 ms october   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:58 pm

[81] i used to have the pettitte curse too diane

89 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 2:58 pm

...

90 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:00 pm

[88] Last year I had the Ponson curse--two games attended, saw him both times. That said, he won both games, so I couldn't complain too much.

91 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:15 pm

Wow @ those two runs by the O's!

That's okay though. Hughes and/or Mo are the "Severe Tire Damage" strips for opposing teams' Score Trucks...

: )

92 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:18 pm

[91]

LOL .... nicely turned phrase

93 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:18 pm

I would send Gardy again.

94 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:19 pm

[93] Or maybe I would just let Damon get a base hit.

95 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:20 pm

Ooooh, GameChannel has "undefined" relieving Berken. I wonder if undefined got traded for Player to be Named Later.

96 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:26 pm

[95]

LOL ..... I hear his pitch repetoire is "null set" :-)

97 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:26 pm

Now undefined is relieving Burnett? Did undefined get traded during innings?

98 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:26 pm

[95]

Someone break out the Venn Diagrams!

99 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:29 pm

Here's a puzzler, suppose a pitcher is pitching in a game, there's a rain postponement made up a month later. But the pitcher gets traded to the other team.
Could a pitcher be both the winner and loser in the same game? Is it possible?

100 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:31 pm

[99]

I don't believe so .... he would in essence be re-entering the game, which of course isn't allowed.

101 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:32 pm

Hughes' tight curveball eerily reminds me of Doc Gooden's "back in the day"...

: )

102 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:32 pm

[99] No, but only because for him to be the loser for Team A, Team B would have to have the lead. So when the pitcher switched to Team B, he would not have been the pitcher of record.

Now, your more fundamental observation is valid: suspended games are goofy because the rosters could be radically different.

103 Just Fair   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:33 pm

Just curious, who is the actress in the picture that adorns this thread? Thanks in advance to anyone whoe answers.

104 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:33 pm

[100] But he CAN "re-enter" the game for the other team.

105 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:36 pm

Kay: "Bruney is warming in case the Yankees score another run, since it not be a save situation."

I love the Save stat.

106 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:37 pm

Let's see. Top of the ninth in a scoreless game, one guy gets on, then the rains come.

when play resumes, new pitcher gives up a run scoring double, but that's it. So the run & potential loss goes to old pitcher. Traded pitcher then pitches bottom of ninth for the other team. I guess he could be credited with a save in that situation, but not the win? Or if there were a succession of pitchers could the official scorer give him the win?

107 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:39 pm

Woohoo Jorge!

108 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:39 pm

i like how A-Rod is stealing bases 2 games in a row, but i hope he doesn't do too much on that hip...

109 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:40 pm

no Mo today...

110 BuckFoston   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:44 pm

Pitcher A from the Yankees pitches top of ninth with the Yankees trailing. Mid-ninth rains come. Pitcher A is traded to the Red Sox (I know, would never really happen). Game resumed at later date Pitcher A is brought in by Red Sox to finish bottom of ninth. Pitcher A gives up game winning Grand Slam to Handsome Ransom. Pitcher A is pitcher of record for Yankees having pitched top of ninth getting Win. Pitcher is losing pitcher for Red Sox getting loss.

All of these things above are needless to say highly improvable.

111 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:46 pm

[103] I'll take a wild guess and say that's Paulette Goddard "armed and dangerous" with the pie, Just Fair...

*shrug*

112 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:50 pm

[110] Flaw: If Pitcher A is pitcher of record for top of the ninth with the Yankees trailing, bottom of ninth doesn't get played. Red Sox would have won at that point.

113 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:53 pm

SAVE SITUATION NOW!!!

114 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:54 pm

Time for Mo...

115 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:54 pm

Gulp.

116 BuckFoston   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:54 pm

[112] Red Sox bat in top of inning, he is pitching for Yankees. Then in bottom of inning he is pitching for Red Sox and Yankees are batting.

117 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:55 pm

Brew-knee is cooked.

Mo in for the save?

118 PJ   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:55 pm

At least RIY and family gets to see Mo!

: )

119 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:56 pm

Jeez...
I didn'r see “armed and dangerous” on the list of Paulette Goddard movies. PG was a brunette (not that that means that much) who did 68 movies from '29 to '72. Quite a career.

120 monkeypants   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:56 pm

OK, I was being facetious before, but I would not pull Bruney here with the bases empty and a 2-run lead. If he gives up another runner, yes.

BTW, someone should remind Kay what the definition of a Save is.

121 BuckFoston   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:56 pm

Bruney, needs time to regain his form. He should be pitching in AAA until he has his stuff, control and confidence back.

122 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:56 pm

Double Gulp

123 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 22, 2009 3:58 pm

125 rbj   ~  Jul 22, 2009 4:00 pm

OK GameChannel, Mariano Rivera is not "undefined".

I Like Bruney, but what [121] said. Yeah, Scranton time.

126 ms october   ~  Jul 22, 2009 4:01 pm

[121] i agree too.

right now the pen is mo, hughesy, cokey, ace

roberts, melancon, bruney are not trusted - having 3 non-trustworthy guys doesn't work - bring albie back, hope roberston throws strikes, and find a 3rd somewhere else

looks like weeping finally got his backward k - hope he saw it

127 thelarmis   ~  Jul 22, 2009 4:01 pm

[118] i wonder if RI set Bruney up just for that reason?! ; )

[116] Ah. Hmmm. Must think.

129 RIYank   ~  Jul 22, 2009 5:09 pm

[118] [127]
Not sure how I could have done that, thelarmis, but I was sure rooting for it. I shouted for joy when Bruney coughed up the second homer and the infielders gathered on the mound, and the door to the bullpen opened...

Early score truck deliveries? check.
Posada bombada? check
Gritner swipe? check
Philthy relief? check
Bruney specials? check
Mo backward K? check!

And of course, the-he-e-e-e-e-e Yankees Win!
Everything just as ordered!

[129] Nothing like the perfect end to the perfect game.

monkeypants, I heard part of the game on the radio, and instead of his usual bs, at one point Sterling said, "Very tough to predict baseball." I almost drove off the road, because (in some ways), he's exactly right.

Took him long enough.
