Chocolate Funk on Planet Lovetron

The Big Fella is on the hill for the Yanks tonight. He’s had a good not great season so far. I’d really like to see him go on a serious roll here. Who knows how much longer Burnett can stay this hot. It’s gotta start and end with CC.

Let’s go boys, this is just the warm-up. We’re hoping y’all fatheads make the playoffs and bring us home another title.

Ya herd?

[4] Right, but I am watching on Rogers Sports Net in Canada, which is supposed to get tonight's game feed from wherever if comes. Fucking great...they've got the wrong feed.

7 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:07 pm

OK...they just switched to the Rays feed. Calm has been restored.

8 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:09 pm

i'm not sure if this was posted in the jeter thread earlier today (if so, my apolgies, i was distracted by oyf's blind loyalty to ownership :})
derek's obp is 402 - highest on the team - only his 1999-2000 and 2006 season higher - quite nice and him leading off has paid off (jd's obp is 364) - even if the lineup order is not that big of a difference over the course of a season

9 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:10 pm

[7] good - we need your banter
it is always a bit diconcerting to expect baseball and you see yankeeography

My tv feed looks like it's from left center. Bizarre.

14 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:17 pm

[11] Kay and Sterling come from the school of fabricated excitement. Of course, Kay is on TV so it doesn't really work that well. Sterling, however, does an excellent job. He so completely makes things up that when you watch a replay after listening it's like experiencing a whole new game.

15 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:21 pm

i think melky almost stole on jeter

[14] yeah it's like he doesn't trust that the play itself is exciting enough. he has to make it exciting.

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:21 pm

Jarrod Washburn is officially available.

The Mariners informed the Yankees on Tuesday that they would listen to trade offers for the veteran left-hander, who is 8-6 with a 2.71 ERA this season.

well, beats picking up Bronson Arroyo ...

17 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:22 pm

Aside from too many walks, I think this pitching staff's biggest problem is dealing with men on base....not only holding them close, but not becoming distracted while doing so. I think that's the biggest reason for the Yankees struggles against the Angels. A hit by a speedy runner turns into an implosion.

18 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:23 pm

It must be glove 'cause offense don't smell like that!

: )

21 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:24 pm

[17] it seems to me that, aside from walks, pitching with men on base is every pitching staff's problem

22 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:26 pm

crawford is fast but i think most left fielders cut that ball off, not hit all that well

23 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:26 pm

[17] I normally don't mind that too much. I'm more of the Bobby Cox/Atlanta Pitching staff mentality: ignore the runners and pay attention to the batter. This was certainly Maddux' m.o.

But with the Yankees, it does seem to lead not infrequently to meltdowns.

24 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:26 pm

pretty good for a guy with a bad hip

25 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:26 pm

[21] I didn't mean pitching with all men on base, but dealing with speedy runners.

26 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:27 pm

[23] I am also in the ignore the runners camp in many situations. That's not what the Yankees seem to do. Instead, they seem to become very preoccupied with the runner, which translates to less focus on the hitter.

27 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:28 pm

[25] yeah but isn't that why everyone has trouble with those kinds of teams? i agree with monkeypants that it's best for them to just pitch, though it is infuriating when they pay absolutely no attention when it's obvious a steal is upcoming.

28 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:29 pm

Anyone getting an mlb.tv feed? I have a black square.

29 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:29 pm

[23] i have no way of truly knowing this, but it *seemed* like maddux truly ignored the runners - he didn't do anything to hold them and he didn't let them effect his pitching; some of the yankee pitchers follow the first part - don't vother holding them on, but they at times *seem* to let the speedy runners bother them

30 Just Fair   ~  Jul 28, 2009 7:30 pm

[25] The Nationals "lead the league with dealing with speedy runners." And look where they are. : D Yes I made that up.

76 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:05 pm

I think the difference between 2nd half 2008 CC and 1st half 2009 CC really says something aboyt the difference in offense between the leagues and divisions.

Oh shit

77 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:05 pm

That's not so good. CC hasn't exactly been light out in the "big games". That is starting to worry me a little bit.

man, bad case of HUA (head up ass) for everybody tonite.

yuck.

87 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:08 pm

[78] You think? The triple is the only really hard hit ball. The walks suck, but aside from that it's been crappy defense and a little luck.

88 randym77   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:08 pm

[80] Then he should have played it off the wall.

And there are definitely Yankees scouts at tonight's Reds game, scouting Arroyo. Dodgers, too.

89 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:08 pm

[81] Exactly...but he overpursued the ball and, because he was too close to the wall on an uncatchable ball, the ball rebounded past him and allowed both the triple and the run to score.

90 PJ   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:09 pm

It speaks volumes that Gabe Kapler is a better OF than Nick Swisher... and it took less than an inning to see it in action...

91 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:10 pm

[87] i agree. the walks last inning weren't good though.

92 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:11 pm

Kay and Kenny are right that the bunt was stupid, but they have the wrong reason. "If Longoria doesn't score, they'll wonder why they had their clean-up hitter bunt..."
But the reason is that the Rays lose most of their chance of a really big inning here with that bunt. If you think Kazmir will hold the Yankees, then fine, but that's a pretty doubtful prediction.

[113] Baserunning is really their only weak point. This offense doesn't even strike out a lot (just a few away from the lowest total in the league). If they could eliminate the baserunning gaffes, it would be one of the better Yankee offenses...EVER. It might still be that when all is said and done.

I think baserunning can be taught, to a certain point, but you need to work at it and practice constantly. Remember three or four years ago, Jorgie decided to work on his baserunning? He actually did improve. But then he decided to work on his footwork or his throwing or whatever, and kind of forgot the baserunning.

8 hits and a walk in three innings (don't know why I said "3 2/3") and the A's have just two runs.

[151] Bard has been reported to be "untouchable".
I think this is stupid. We all know that Theo will trade anyone for the right deal. Look how they got Beckett. If Hanly Ramirez wasn't untouchable, nobody is.

Peter Gammons was reporting earlier today that the rumors of the Halladay offer must be wrong, because Ryan Westmoreland is untouchable. The bathos of Gammons' decline from respectability makes me uncomfortable.

Swisher is pretty bad out there, but C.C. has really been disappointing in this game. The Yankees need him to be more dominant in more games.

171 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:49 pm

[167] Hard to see if the ball was fair or foul...it was definitely close. It looks like one of those games: if they have a chance to make a defensive play, the miss it...a chance to get a big hit, they miss it.

177 Just Fair   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:50 pm

Hey, Kenny. Maybe Swish does not want to run full bore at the bullpen mound. Irregardless, our outfield defense sucks moose balls.

178 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:51 pm

[167] is it anything that's not kosher?

179 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:51 pm

Baseball is really the most challenging sport. The Yankees have been playing incredibly well, yet a loss here followed by some tough games ahead could result in them being 2.5 games out by this time next week.

180 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:52 pm

[173] He's thrown 54 strikes. That's enough. But he should throw fewer balls.

181 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:52 pm

[173] Not only has he walked too many, but the HR by Longoria and Crawford 3B accounted for three runs on their own. In only 5 innings, that's way too many.

182 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:53 pm

[178] Yes. For example, shrimp is extremely traif.

186 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:53 pm

[181] how can 2 hits account for 3 runs on their own?

187 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:54 pm

the HR by Longoria and Crawford 3B accounted for three runs on their own.

191 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:55 pm

194 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:56 pm

[186] [187] Because the triple knocked in a run and put a man on 3B with no outs. The HR speaks for itself. What's so hard to understand?

197 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:58 pm

[193] I think literally it's only for food, but it's often used figuratively. Just as "kosher" is, come to think of it. It has the strong connotation of "dirty" and "the unwholesome stuff those gentiles do, not for us".

198 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:58 pm

[191] confused about the apparent optimism of [63]. i'm not sure about the 162 game grind making it more difficult- a 16 game schedule is difficult in its own way. but i do think baseball is tough. but it's tough for the sox and the rays too. next week they could still be 2.5 games (or more) up, even if they lose tonight.

199 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 8:59 pm

[194] someone was on before the triple, thanks to a bloop single. the triple didn't score that run by itself.

[199] Now it's not funny.

202 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:00 pm

[198] I am probably one of a few here who thinks the Yankees will win 100 games, so I don't get your point about optimism. The point I was making about the 162 schedule is that even if you play extremely well for 30 games, you still have to play extremely well for the next 30. That's not really a statement of optimism or pessimism...it's the reality of the AL East and a reason that baseball is the best sport on the planet.

203 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:01 pm

[199] The point was those three runs weren't aided by poor defense...they resulted largely from two very big hits that a pitcher like CC doesn't always yield.

204 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:02 pm

wow ... that's one of the worst throws i've ever seen.

207 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:03 pm

[202] i was just making a joke about how it only took 3 or 4 innings for you to turn from a generally optimistic statement (feels weird to be losing even one game) to a generally pessimistic one (yanks could be down 2.5 by next week)

208 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:03 pm

Mark Buerhle has a no hitter through 3 innings :)

209 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:04 pm

[207] Ah...I didn't get the joke because I don't think either is optimistic or pessimistic...just statements of reality (or at least my reality).

212 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:05 pm

Now this is an example of potential run being largely the result of Damon's weak arm.

213 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:05 pm

[200] Right...but I agree with what William is trying to say: CC has mostly made his own mess tonight--he walked guys in the second to set up a run on an out; he gave up a triple--this maybe was misplayed, but then he is looking at 2nd and 3rd with no outs; the HR was a bomb. He's been a little unlucky (as you note, there were some bloop hits), but the poor defense has not contributed much to the other team's scoring, as I saw it.

214 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:06 pm

[203] ok but my point is that the triple and the hr by themselves only actually accounted for 1 run. a pitcher like cc can give up a hr, and he can give up a triple. sometimes a guy on 3rd doesn't score- and also it isn't cc's fault that the triple was to one of the fastest guys in the league. i don't mean to be making excuses for him, i just think he's done pretty well this game.

interesting play there- he looked out to me.

Teix's close but no cigar play at 1B leads me to a qustion:

On a force out, must the defensive player step on teh bag or tag it with the ball, or can he touch the bag with any part of his body? In other words, had Teix held the ball in his glove (left hand) on that play, but reached over and touched the bag with his bare hand (right hand), is the runner out?

was it Floyd Youmans ?!?!?! ; )

280 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:27 pm

[268] the unfortunate thing is, if you haven't seen the whole game there was even more bullshit plays from him tonight - for sure another 1 and maybe 2

281 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:28 pm

Buehrle in mid-game interview: I am not a matcheen.

282 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:28 pm

[276] Wait, so we have to try to find out which comment you can see and nobody else can! This is imperative!

Or else you've got a missing number somewhere.

283 ms october   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:29 pm

hey melancon was ready to go tonight

284 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:29 pm

Great inning for Melancon...if it means he gets to stay and Albaledejo goes, at least this game wasn't a total loss.

285 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:29 pm

man, wouldn't that be insane if Buerhle went another 9 perfect innings ... AND ... the Sox didn't score and he got Haddix'd in the 10th.

and hey, look, the world didn't implode when Melancon got to pitch.

286 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:29 pm

[279 or so] Comment in moderation--aha. I'm not sure if I do...perhaps one that I posted quickly. That must be it.

288 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:30 pm

289 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:30 pm

[282] Perhaps monkeypants can "see" things..is he the first Banter "Hero"? (Sorry, the lady and I just finished the first season of "Heroes"..surprisingly, I loved it)

290 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:31 pm

293 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:32 pm

The Yankee offense seemingly came to halt around the time Matsui was nabbed.

This has definitely been a game of some bad breaks.

294 thelarmis   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:32 pm

[290] ah yeah, that's right! thanks, man!

295 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:32 pm

Wow..Swisher stopped at 1B.

296 PJ   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:32 pm

[288] Who knew they did such fine work?

LOL

297 monkeypants   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:33 pm

OK, comments section is messing with my mind..this game sucks...socks winning on teh other channel. I'm out of here for a walk and ice cream. MMMMMMM...ice cream.

[295] longest single in the world

300 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:33 pm

heh ... well, at least the obvious (swisher compounding his confounding and getting thrown out at 2nd) didn't happen there

it says something that the thought crossed my mind though.

anyway, nice to hear the crowd get loud for Kazmir there, I guess there are actual Rays fans ...

I'm listening to the Chicago guys. On the one hand, it only seems right. On the other, oh my god.

Oh, Dye just hit a homer, and it's positively excruciating. I would rather listen to John Sterling in one ear and Joe Castiglione in the other than hear Hawk.

303 thelarmis   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:34 pm

Pale Hose on the board - Dye solo shot.

304 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:35 pm

[302] Very funny...could you imagine all three in the same booth? I think it would explode due to the sheer size of the combined egos mixed with all that hot air.

305 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:35 pm

why are you even bothering to show bunt there melky?

306 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:36 pm

If the Yankees can get a few hits...

307 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:36 pm

If this is a replay of last night's AB, Jeter gets a single through the 1B hole.

311 thelarmis   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:38 pm

[306] big if...

i'll settle for Oaktown coming back and Buehrle doing the UNpossible...

312 RIYank   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:38 pm

[308] What is "follow the trail"? It sounds like some taoist thing.

313 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:40 pm

The Yanks have more bad defensive plays then hits.
Maybe that's why they're losing?
Every starter but CC should get a pie in the face (and of stingy stuff).

314 Just Fair   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:40 pm

I wonder if the Gardenhire would order his hitters NOT to bunt.

315 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:40 pm

5.1 innings for Buehrle

316 51cq24   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:41 pm

re this chase commercial: would it be socially UNACCEPTABLE to just say "cash only? that's whack. let me run over to the atm i'll be back in 1 minute"?

317 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:41 pm

5.2 innings

318 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:41 pm

man, Buerhle is fun to watch.

get the ball and throw strikes.

319 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:42 pm

I guess the Yanks just don't play defense for CC.

320 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:43 pm

342 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:49 pm

Johnny walks to start the rally! Let's go Yankees!

343 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:49 pm

I don't like that AB Mark :(

344 Just Fair   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:50 pm

From White Sox Banter
Guillen should have pullled Buerhle after the walk. He was obviously spent after retiring so many hitters in a row. Now they're on the verge of losing to the pathetic Twins. Another example of how a manager can cost his team the game. : D

345 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:50 pm

Crappy game all around...hopefully the good Joba shows up tomorrow. Winning this series would be big.

346 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:50 pm

Mark Buehrle, like Algernon, returns to his more normal pattern of behavior ...

347 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:52 pm

[344] Cute...albeit it a very distorted analogy.

348 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:52 pm

[346] So, no flowers for Buerhle after the game?

349 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:53 pm

Damn it...just realized the Yankees will get Buerhle on Sunday.

350 williamnyy23   ~  Jul 28, 2009 9:53 pm

We'll get em tomorrow.

[353] nice man!

356 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 28, 2009 10:05 pm

at least Melancon got in and pitched very well.

that has to be good for his confidence.

now, if Joey Joe Joe noticed, that would be helpful too.
