"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Fun in the Sun

I haven’t watched any spring training action yet.

Soon enough, the games will be real. In the meantime, here’s hoping the Yankees manage to stay healthy.

Hooray, baseball!!
(Though one wonders if anyone's around to enjoy the game with...)

Javy's first pitch as a Yankee as good as his last

3 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:06 pm

Umm, isn't this precisely where we left off?
I know it's meaningless, but still, one pitch...

4 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:08 pm

Nice play, Robinson Cano.

5 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:11 pm

missed the hr but the changeup to k utley was beautiful. too bad the people at yes don't know how to broadcast a baseball game or else they might have replayed it.

Welcome back, sick Nick.

[2] technically not true but still...

8 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:24 pm

I don't much care for this giant, gangly lumberjack guy.

Werth, who used to look like a ballplayer, looks like shit

10 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:26 pm

Ok, that was better.

11 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:29 pm

Beautiful hit, Robinson.

12 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:30 pm

No pepper games? How about onion games? Or maybe zucchini games?

Time to start thinking about the garden. In the 50s here.

13 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:34 pm

Robbie's gonna lead the league this year in NPH % (Nice Piece Of Hitting)

14 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:34 pm

[11] word

15 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:43 pm

[13] Hehhe heh heh. Nicely said.

16 RagingTartabull   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:44 pm

this anti-pepper game discrimination has gone on long enough

17 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:55 pm

Wtf did Kay just say about the beard being on the other side???

18 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:55 pm

what does "that beard could be on the other side" mean?

19 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 1:56 pm

[17] haha

20 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:02 pm

ha it's ok that ruiz doesn't have "exorbitant" stats because he's "not that kind of player"

21 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:02 pm

[17] [18] Not sure I want to know.

22 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:07 pm

Good old Michael Kay. Fordham's own.
Do you suppose we'll ever make our peace with him?
There are times when I'm able to just let it go, when just resign myself to his presence. Often I just tune him out, but frankly, that can be mentally draining given the fact that he never shuts up.

How do you solve a problem like Michael?

23 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:08 pm

Wow.
How the hell did Rollins get to that?

24 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:11 pm

[22] i'll never accept him. sometimes i have more sympathy for him than other times, but i've never thought he's anything but a terrible announcer. he's so bad that when he was on radio i preferred sterling.

"The Yankees and the Red Sox descended on the island..."

26 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:14 pm

Gee, Michael, why do they call the Yankees "the evil empire?" Perhaps you'd care to tell us.

27 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:15 pm

[24] Ouch. Kay, Sterling, Kay, Sterling. Choose your poison, man.

28 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:15 pm

Is that an official Yankees "Evil Empire" t-shirt?

29 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:17 pm

[28] Yup, it's official! Yankees fans almost wear that shirt as a "badge of honor" now. When it was first spoken it was almost in a derogatory kind of way, but now it's almost a "badge of honor" as I say. Funny how these things happen. Something starts out being, you know, almost derogative and it ends up being laudatory. You just can't predict baseball. Oh, wait, that's the other guy.

30 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:18 pm

speaking of announcers, why does everyone seem to dislike flaherty? i think that now that cone is gone he's my favorite guy on yes. a singleton-flaherty-lieter/o'neill team would be ideal.

31 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:20 pm

I have nothing against Flaherty. Not quite sure why people don't like him.

32 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:21 pm

[29] Thanks. I'm gonna have to get me one.

And Swisher's driving the Score Truck.

33 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:21 pm

Contreras looks pretty good against the top of the order.
Infield pop up Johnson, groundout Teix, first pitch single to Posada, and nibbles around Cano for a walk.
Fastball still zipping in the low 90s.. offspeed in the upper 70s.
As Ive said here before, I would have preferred him to CHP who's out today with a strained glute.
let's see what he does against Swish.. more nibbling.. 3-1 count..
off the wall! 2 runs in...

as I was saying about Contreras...

34 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:22 pm

[31] the only thing that's ever bothered me about him is that he thinks joba's a reliever. but i have to admit i'm getting closer and closer to agreeing.

35 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:23 pm

I like Flaherty too, but didn't he call a bunch of losses last year or something? something of a bad luck charm? not sure, but I think he does a very good job.

36 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:25 pm

[34] a lot of people agree with Flash re: Joba, not least of all, Mariano Rivera.

37 51cq24   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:26 pm

[35] that sounds familiar. if it's just superstition then i understand.

38 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:31 pm

Why is Kay always trying to stir it up?

39 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:37 pm

I've been gifted with an inner Michael Kay auto tune-out. I swear I hear his voice, but nothing gets through to my nerves.
I think others have been cursed with an inner Michael Kay amplifier which makes every word he utters cause teeth grinding, and internal bleeding.

40 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:43 pm

Nicely done, Frosty!

41 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:44 pm

Robbie's NPH!

42 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:44 pm

[39] :)

43 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:45 pm

Yay Robbie jumps up on the Score Truck.

I think Flaherty is ok.

44 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:46 pm

God damn, Swisher!!!
Smoked that baseball!

45 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:46 pm

Contreras has always been baffling...
makes Teix look silly... walks Posada on 4 pitches... gets knifed by Robbie.. crushed by Swish..

I'll still take Contreras over CHP at this point by virtue of Jose not being out with a strained butt muscle.

46 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:47 pm

That was some very, very nice hitting. Way to drill it the other way.

47 RagingTartabull   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:47 pm

Flaherty is a good analyst, but I dunno...there isn't anything particularly "likable" about him.

Not saying he needs to start dressing up like a clown or anything, but Singleton, Cone, and Leiter always gave off the vibe of being guys that if you saw them at a bar you could approach them and talk baseball...Flaherty just seems kinda cold.

Thats probably not fair, I just think thats how he comes off.

48 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:50 pm

Gee, 99 is a high number for a baseball player. Tell us, Michael, what might such a number portend for its bearer?

49 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 8, 2010 2:50 pm

"Not saying he needs to start dressing up like a clown or anything"
Hah ah ah hah aha ha haa hah ah!!

50 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:18 pm

ah, a double to the gap....
and nice hustle home...

move this David Adams kid up!

51 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:24 pm

Mmmmm, Mo. I'll mark March 17 down.

52 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:31 pm

[51] one of the LoHud writers, I think Sam, is speculating that Mo's start will be moved (in either direction) as March 17 is an away game, and Mo prefers to work at Tampa.

53 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:42 pm

[52] Hmmm.

Good news about Brains.

54 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:48 pm

9th inning... Yanks up 7-5... 1 out.. Phillys rallying.. runners on 1st and 2nd...

life without Mo ain't pretty

55 Sliced Bread   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:53 pm

Whelan comes in with the "electric stuff".. gets the swinging k... and the can o'corn to rf... ballgame over.. split-squad double header over.. Yankees win.. thuuuuuuh Yankees WIN!

56 rbj   ~  Mar 8, 2010 3:55 pm

Yankees sweep Pennsylvania, and all's right with the world now.
