"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Top of the Mornin’

Just in time for St. Patty’s Day, dig this new novel by Steve Rushin, formerly of Sports Illustrated. Rushin is a talented and funny writer. I remember Jay Jaffe enthusiastically recommending Rushin’s Road Swing and I was not disappointed. He’s the goods. This novel looks like fun.

I was just looking at Cano's projections and career numbers. I noticed he has a career OBP of .339. I believe this is considered 'barely decent'?

For all his talent, I wonder if this number is how his future will look, how much value he has. He is making $9m this year and $10m in 2011. His 2012 option is for $14m.

This is SERIOUS money in this economy. I know he is still one of the best 2nd basemen. But we all know not to be seduced by BA, but rather to look at OBP.

I guess his relative power (for a 2nd baseman) makes up for some of this. His career OPS is .818. What kind of OPS does he need over the next two years to be worth $19m, and what will 2011 need to look like in order to pay him $14m in 2012.

If Robbie doesn't continue his 2009 numbers, or even take it up a notch, I wonder if he will be 'Abreu'ed' in 2012 (ie: salary nosedive).

Thoughts?
