is it bad that I never knew who Alex Chilton was until after Paul Westerberg told me?

Nope. I didn't know about him either until yesterday. Which is beautiful because there's always more to know even for us cultured kids.

I honestly would put Chilton at his best against anyone. A super talent. Wrote the best bridges ever.

Nice to see this up here, as a fan.

[1] I think that's what Westerberg was hoping - to turn people on to Chilton's music.

[2] You may not have known you knew him, but surely you knew at least The Letter by the Box Tops.

I've been listening to Back of A Car by Big Star over and over...Ballad of El Goodo and September Gurls, too.

Dig that guitar break followed by that killer drum break!

"I loved you, well, never mind." Adolescent love and frustration in a nutshell.

I listened to "Kangaroo" yesterday. Don't know if it's ever been quite as haunting; guess that makes sense

This entry warms the cockles of my itinerant poster heart.
I'm only familiar with Alex Chilton from his fans the Replacements, who lead the league in most awesome interviews

Here's one. Love of Chilton starts around 2:35.

One of the greatest shows I ever saw was Alex Chilton solo, circa 1983/84, at the Rat in Kenmore Square in Boston. It was about 100 degrees that day and no one went out, thinking it would be too hot, so only about fifty people showed up. Chilton played for about 2 1/2, 3 hours.
