"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Just Dandy

It’s hookey-gorgeous in the Bronx this afternoon as the Yanks look to sweep the Orioles. Been a good series so far. Andy Pettitte is on the hill for the Bombers.

Go git ’em boys.

it is so nice out - i wish i had taken the day off and gone to the game.
off to a meeting, hopefully they will have a nice lead by the time i get back in.

Maybe this has already been discussed, but if Diane is reading this - I'd love to know how many teams have had 100 or more games where the entire infield has hit in the first five spots of the lineup and the entire OF has hit in the bottom four spots of the lineup. That SS-DH-1B-3B-2B just stands out so much to me . . .

[4]

Its something I've actually thought about earlier this year. I just haven't gotten around to plowing through the Retrosheet boxscores yet.

A rainy day project for sure.

17 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 1:36 pm

Yankee starter ERAs:

2.74
1.99
2.00
9.78

One of these things is not like the others.

22 seamus   ~  May 5, 2010 1:39 pm

[17] that is kind of fun to look at though. if only vazquez would learn how to pitch again.

23 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 1:39 pm

[18] Damn, I wish I'd thought of that.

I bet Mattpat would love to have Dave Hernandez in the Yankee bullpen. He's Scary Fly Ball Man par excellence.

(Have I mentioned this Baltimore defense sucks ass? I mean, really, it's an embarrassment.)

28 Shaun P.   ~  May 5, 2010 1:42 pm

[21] Swisher is having an excellent year (so far). Kevin Long to the rescue again.

[17] [22] If only they'd stay that low all season! Except Javy's, of course.

[25] Grazie.

31 Sliced Bread   ~  May 5, 2010 1:45 pm

extreme slo-mo shows half-way to 2nd base Gritner stopped to tie his shoes, and blow a booger out of his nose, before completing the steal.

32 Sliced Bread   ~  May 5, 2010 1:45 pm

[31] yes, he's THAT FAST.

33 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 1:46 pm

Grounder that doesn't leave the IF, then a K, and Brett's on third.

34 Diane Firstman   ~  May 5, 2010 1:46 pm

[32]

I think this will become the next internet meme .... "Gritner is so fast . . . "

35 Shaun P.   ~  May 5, 2010 1:51 pm

[34] Or a Carson routine:

"How fast is he?"

(Yes I know Carson is dead, but that's what it made me think of.)

36 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 1:51 pm

Pettitte's ERA just dropped below AJ's.

37 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 1:53 pm

Wow, that was an excellent inning. Andy's cruising at CG pace.

Sadly, I have to go. I'll definitely catch the last innings.

was that a legit hit? sounded weird according to sterling and waldman.

52 seamus   ~  May 5, 2010 2:31 pm

ok i get bunting with cervelli on first. but why bunt with gardner on first? This is one place I agree with the Girardi critics. Though I guess if you always rely on the steal that does lead to being easier to throw out.

Hey guys, just fired up the gameday and am wondering the same thing
Is he hurt?

61 tommyl   ~  May 5, 2010 3:01 pm

[59] He's hurt, at least Girardi went to speak to the umpires to tell them that's why Andy was being lifted (so Mitre could warm up in his own time). No report on what the injury is.

62 cult of basebaal   ~  May 5, 2010 3:01 pm

Oh, yeah, that's right, it's Sergio Mitre on the mound.

68 monkeypants   ~  May 5, 2010 3:34 pm

[65] My guess: they're trying to "stretch" Mitre to take over Javy's slot in the rotation. That, or Andy is hurt.

[68] i am feeling toopessimistic about either prospect.

70 cult of basebaal   ~  May 5, 2010 3:36 pm

[68] I'm gonna say Andy is "hurt" as in had some little tweak that they wanted to be careful with.

Javy's going to get several more starts before they make any change in the rotation.

75 cult of basebaal   ~  May 5, 2010 3:55 pm

Man, when Robertson gets hit, he gets clobbered.

76 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 3:56 pm

D-Rob is not-yet-ready-for-prime-time.

77 Yankster   ~  May 5, 2010 3:58 pm

With 1/6 of the season gone, we've got to be a little nervous about the hitting of ARod and Teixeira, don't we? Everyone is saying that they'll hit. That they'll return to something close to their historic numbers, but with an OPS of .622 through 26 games, Teixeira sucks, and he sucks almost as bad as someone everyone agrees is a pit of despair: Ortiz, (OPS of .598).

Yes his defense is amazing, but so is Cervelli's (OPS of .893) and that doesn't seem to matter much to most here relative to offensive production.

I'm just sayin I'd like to see a little more panic in the streets. More wailing and gnashing of teeth. Where does all the patience come from?

78 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 3:59 pm

Hmmmm.

79 cult of basebaal   ~  May 5, 2010 3:59 pm

Dear oh dear, Robertson is just LOST this year.

Melancon might not be in Scranton long ...

80 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 3:59 pm

[77] Nah.
But I am somewhat concerned about the non-Mo portion of the bullpen. Their ERA is dangerously close to 5.

83 thelarmis   ~  May 5, 2010 4:01 pm

we need some Dancin' Melancon...

84 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 5, 2010 4:01 pm

WTH is wrong with Robertson. I had been hoping Melancon would've stayed up and Robertson sent out - he's been terrible.

85 ms october   ~  May 5, 2010 4:01 pm

that we haven't heard anything about an andy injury yet is hopefully a good sign.

[77] i think the patience comes from a well established pattern of being a slow starter and then turning it on. also, he doesn' *look* toasted the way papi does (for the most part).
i do think alex will turn the power on soon, but i do hope it is soon.

86 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 4:02 pm

Not-Mo!
So this means Joe is at least slightly worried about Mariano's stiffness.

[86] Or he's trying to buy another 2 days off for Mo before starting the Boston series.

91 Yankster   ~  May 5, 2010 4:04 pm

[87] much

92 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 4:07 pm

Right, but it must be a pretty serious concern, since we're seeing Boone Logan in a Save Situation.

96 williamnyy23   ~  May 5, 2010 4:09 pm

Does Girardi feel the need to overmanage, or does he have a good reason to avoid using his better pitches? After Robertson gave up the HR to Reimold, he should have gone right to Aceves.

97 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 4:09 pm

Whoa. Still no Mo.

98 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 5, 2010 4:10 pm

So Logan gets to 0-2 then throws a bunch of crap in the lefty batter's box.

[92] I don't know if it's a matter of serious concern, but rather a situation of risk analysis and an approach of favoring the long term. Rivera was available for today's game. I just think Girardi's decided the 2 days of rest are more important than having Mo in the game today, regardless of the situation.

[101] i agree - and it is certainly what i want to believe.

107 RIYank   ~  May 5, 2010 4:16 pm

[101] Could be.
I don't know what situation is "more important" than the ninth inning with the go-ahead run on base, but then again it's not productive to speculate about what Girardi is thinking, when it comes to the bullpen.

Anyway, it worked out. Good ol' Ace.

108 williamnyy23   ~  May 5, 2010 4:17 pm

Giving Mo another day off isn't the problem...trusting Boone Logan with the game when you have Aceves available is. Girardi seems determined to prove to the world that the lefty-lefty matchup is the key to victory. He has problem blown 2 wins already this season and almost added another one. I am just glad Wigginton was up before Markakis because Logan probably would have been left.

109 williamnyy23   ~  May 5, 2010 5:13 pm

I really didn't like the sound of Pettitte's injury....sitffness around the elbow is worrisome. I hope the Yankees have a volume discount on that MRI.

110 thelarmis   ~  May 5, 2010 5:20 pm

[109] esp after he had stiffness on top of his forearm after his last start.

ugh. this can end really badly. : /

let's hope the mri comes back clean and he'll be alright...

crossing all digits...and eyes!

111 The Hawk   ~  May 5, 2010 5:23 pm

Yeah going into the season I was worried about the age/injury issue ... And away we go!

It's funny, cause the Yanks tried to get younger, but that doesn't mean they can turn back the clock on guys like Pettitte and Posada. Not to mention the irony of Granderson - a "get younger" centerpiece - getting knocked out for a month (or more???)

112 williamnyy23   ~  May 5, 2010 5:42 pm

[111] I'll go with the Yankees age anyday, especially when it also includes so much quality. The Yankees may not have great depth. but they have great talent, which should keep them afloat amid all these nicks and bruises. Now, if they suffer another major injury, that could knock them a notch below the Rays and back toward the Sox.

113 cult of basebaal   ~  May 5, 2010 5:49 pm

From LoHud:

Andy Pettitte pitched only five innings and threw only 77 pitches against the Orioles today, and the reason he checked out early was stiffness just above the back of his elbow. That was the area Joe Girardi pointed to during his postgame press conference. Pettitte has gone for an MRI. It turns out that he also had stiffness during his last start against the White Sox, but that was on the top of his forearm. So the Yankees kept checking with him after each inning of this start.

114 a.O   ~  May 5, 2010 6:42 pm

Update from LoHud:

MRI results, taken today at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, on Andy Pettitte, revealed mild inflammation of his left elbow. It will be treated conservatively and will be evaluated on a daily basis at this point.

Regarding the photo above: I'd recommend the film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" which was directed by Banksy and features him as the sometimes subject of the film. His art is fantastic and his transition to film was seemless as he managed a truly fascinating debut that's stayed a topic of debate for me n the missus since seeing it last week.
