Jav-Full or Jav-Empty?

I’ll take Jav-full as Javier Vazquez looks to have a good outing today in the first of two against the Tigers.

Go git ’em, Hoss, and Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Alex - i like your newfound optimism! : )

as Cliff stated in an earlier comment - it's Golson back up, not Miranda. LoHud states Alby is in detroit in case we need a pitcher for game dos...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOGI!!!

Diane - glad you saw the Rush reference!

nyyfan22 - yeah man, i never understood why some people consider Rush metal. hmm... definitely 'prog rock'!

nice 10 minute piece on Mo in Panama last night on espn.

GO YANKS!!!

Ohh, Alex!
I don't know whether to laugh, cry or squirm at that headline.
Oy.

3 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 12:31 pm

oh yeah - william's most excellent Captain's Blog was mentioned and linked to by Neyer in his Wednesday Wangdoodles column today!

4 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 12:32 pm

I'm going to stay optimistic. Javy is going to go on a Mussina 2008 arc starting tonight.

Now, as long as we don't stick with the effing rotating DH, hopefully the team doesn't go on a 2008 run.

5 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 12:34 pm

"If the Yankees need to make a pitching move between games, someone is hear waiting."

Why does that sound like a threat?

6 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 12:37 pm

[5] 'coz it's albaladejo?

7 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 12:38 pm

[6] No!

8 Sliced Bread   ~  May 12, 2010 12:42 pm

the glass is Jav-full... of highly combustible clear fuel which will explode by the 3rd inning.

I kid, I kid! Javy's going 6 quality today.

9 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 12:44 pm

Mattpat is optimistic about the Vazquez start.
Which sign of the apocalypse is that?

10 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 12:56 pm

Is there any team that doesn't have a guy that has multiple HR off Javy?

11 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:02 pm

as much as i LOVE the record 2112, i really really really hope that's not our record at the end of the doubleheader...

12 Chyll Will   ~  May 12, 2010 1:02 pm

[9] Is that the Sixth Sense, Seventh Seal or Eighth Wonder?

13 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:05 pm

[10] The Yankees?

14 Chyll Will   ~  May 12, 2010 1:07 pm

[13] I dunno about that; with the Gardner State anything's possible...

15 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:10 pm

That was quick

16 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 1:10 pm

Well this is annoying, I can't get the local radio broadcast of the game.

17 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:12 pm

[13] Granderson

18 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:13 pm

"Deep"

19 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 1:13 pm

[16] and the 0-2 pitch... hit HIGH in the air to left..
[long pause]
so here's damon with one away...

20 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:14 pm

Thames has a couple off him too.

[19]

I'm listening to the Tigers radio feed (thank heavens for mlb.com)

23 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:16 pm

well, that went well!

24 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 1:16 pm

Wow!
A scoreless inning!
What's next, frogs from the sky?

25 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:17 pm

That was quick too.

26 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:17 pm

[22] i'm listening to Paul Gilbert - thank god for rock 'n roll guitar shredders! : )

that said, i'm following the game online, watching the braves game (on mute) and have to abandon all to get stuff done...

27 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 1:17 pm

[24] now now, he's had scoreless innings this year.

[27] How many? Two? Three, maybe?

30 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 1:19 pm

[28] :)

31 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:19 pm

[27] But now many of them were innings that didn't involve line drives at people?

32 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:19 pm

[21] thanks for that. (i think)

33 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:20 pm

[28] don't forget to dip your pinkie in the wine. and lean to the left!

34 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 1:21 pm

[29] hmm, good question. I count 14 before today.

35 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 1:22 pm

is everything a strike today?

36 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 1:22 pm

[31] what's your point? that they weren't good scoreless innings? who cares. if you're trying to argue that javy hasn't been good, you won't find that here.

37 Diane Firstman   ~  May 12, 2010 1:22 pm

[28]

I don't see the Cardinals or Padres on my schedule ...

38 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:24 pm

It's so easy to like Nick Swisher.

39 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:26 pm

i really wish randy winn wasn't at the dish.

40 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 1:26 pm

hmm. pitching around Winn?

41 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:26 pm

...though i'm glad he didn't make an out.

i like el nino, but i wish there weren't 2 outs already...

42 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:27 pm

Come on, Squirt! Hit it!

43 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:28 pm

44 Crazy8Rick   ~  May 12, 2010 1:34 pm

How bout Javy half EMPTY!!!!!

45 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:34 pm

vewy vewy nice, javy!

46 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:34 pm

I didn't want to jinx it, but I've been watching these first two innings closely: Javy now has exactly as many Earned Runs as Innings Pitched! His ERA has dropped to 9.0!

47 a.O   ~  May 12, 2010 1:38 pm

Brett the Jett about to blast off?

48 Diane Firstman   ~  May 12, 2010 1:39 pm

Worry point for Jeter:

2010 GB/FB ratio (prior to today): 2.08

career rate: 1.22

49 cult of basebaal   ~  May 12, 2010 1:39 pm

[46] Shush!

Meanwhile, Tigers' announcers are very impressed with Gardner's speed ...

50 Diane Firstman   ~  May 12, 2010 1:40 pm

Another worry point:

Line Drive rate: Career: 22%; 2010: 16%

51 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:42 pm

[48] sensei over at nomaas has a solid metrics piece today on jeter's worrisome tendencies at the plate thus far this season.

52 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:46 pm

Its impossible to give up a homer to Everett, right?

53 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 1:46 pm

[34] Really?
Fourteen?
That's amazing.

54 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:48 pm

I hate waste pitches

55 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 1:49 pm

that's 4 K's. all swinging, i believe!

56 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 1:52 pm

Have the Yankees secretly replaced Javy Vazquez with a pitcher?

57 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 1:53 pm

Ha!

58 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 1:54 pm

AAAAAAAHHHH1!!

What a buffoon!!!

59 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:57 pm

Can someone explain what happened on Posada's hit? For those of us who aren't watching.

60 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 1:59 pm

Randy Winn scares the pants off Rick Porcello, huh?

61 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 2:00 pm

Winn apparently strikes fear into the heart of the young pony pirate.

62 seamus   ~  May 12, 2010 2:01 pm

RISP with two outs. ouch.

63 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:01 pm

So far so good for Javy, but the injuries on offense are really starting to take their toll.

64 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 2:01 pm

I hate wasted opportunities.

65 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 2:02 pm

[63] i'm sure you saw that neyer linked to your blog today...?!

66 cult of basebaal   ~  May 12, 2010 2:05 pm

Well, the velocity isn't up today, but the command is much improved, which is a good sign.

67 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 2:07 pm

Four scoreless innings!

68 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:09 pm

[65] Yes...I was wondering why my readership increased by about 300 times! I hope some of the people come back.

69 Sliced Bread   ~  May 12, 2010 2:09 pm

[66] I've been saying all along, his velocity is not the problem.. Command and confidence have been the issues. You can get by on an 88,89, 90mph fastball (even if you're supposed to be throwing 94mph) if you can hit your targets.

70 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 2:10 pm

Losing Ace worries me. I'd feel confident about our chances today if he were in the bullpen.

71 cult of basebaal   ~  May 12, 2010 2:11 pm

[69] Yes, you just don't have nearly the same margin for error.

72 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 2:11 pm

Nothing's going Derek's way

73 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:11 pm

[70] Ace is a big loss....I really think this is a big game for the Yankees. With the stregth of their upcoming schedule combined with all the injuries taking a toll, they could be headed for a rough stretch.

Arod, Tex and Jeter have to carry the load.

74 Sliced Bread   ~  May 12, 2010 2:12 pm

[71] true dat

75 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 2:13 pm

[71] And not if you have a mid 80s change

76 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 2:13 pm

81 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:23 pm

5 innings of 1-hit ball?!?! WTF

91 OldYanksFan   ~  May 12, 2010 2:26 pm

Just got in.... don't know if the news is good or not. JV obviously doesn't like it when I watch him.

Is our offense beginning to slack off? ARod and Jeter doing nothing lately.

92 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:27 pm

Yankee bats have to wake up here...maybe we need more Brains.

93 Sliced Bread   ~  May 12, 2010 2:27 pm

Eiland (to Javy): Let's go kid, you can do it. Just remember the stuff we worked on.

Posada (to Javy): wiff this punk or I'll beat your ass.

[87] that's frackin awesome

Javy Nagila!

97 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:29 pm

I gotta say, the classic rock songs they play when coming out of the commercial break on the Tigers radio broadcast makes it worth the price of admission.

Mean while, Ortiz has Boston's only hit through four. Another pitcher's duel up there. Marcum vs Wake, Javy vs. Porcello, no runs among the four teams in a total of nine innings between them.

[100] when yes comes back from commercial, there's some weird audio clip of michael kay saying something along the lines of "...coming into work, but it's not really work..." i've heard it a few times.

110 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:36 pm

Was that pitch to Ordonez really a change?
Vazquez has an 88 mph change-up to go with his 88 mph fastball?
Why do they call it "change"?

143 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 12, 2010 2:52 pm

The knock on Russo as a UIF candidate is that he can't (really) play SS. He's a natural 2B that's played plenty of 3B (and some SS and OF)

156 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 2:57 pm

[147] Hah ah ha ah a a !!
Oh, dear Lord.

157 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 2:58 pm

[154] Right, that's the kind of thing I'm thinking about.
What would be the price for Miguel Cabrera? Does the baggage bring his price down?

158 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:58 pm

Pending reinforcements, the Yankees need Jeter to relearn his approach, because his free swinging has been a big problem.

159 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 2:58 pm

I'm assuming Javy is done for the day?

7 innings, 5 hits + 2 BB, 2ER & 7Ks. Quality start.

The hitters, on the other hand. . . not so quality.

160 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 2:59 pm

[157] I'd be shocked if he was available.

161 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 2:59 pm

[148] theme of the day!

very good outing by javy nagila

162 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:00 pm

Another three pitch AB for Jeter...he's slowing down.

163 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 3:00 pm

i don't want to trade cervelli. maybe i'm influenced by his high babip, but i really like him as a backup. with all our shitty defensive catchers, it's good to have a great defensive backup.

164 thelarmis   ~  May 12, 2010 3:01 pm

[154] ty cobbinton would be great. i wonder if he'd be pricier simply 'coz it'd be intradivision...

165 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:02 pm

BoSox have one hit through six against Shaun Marcus.

[160] He's very expensive. If the Tigers are too far behind at the end of June...

166 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:03 pm

[163] But Austin Romine is nearly ready. And for another team, Cervelli could start, which makes him much more valuable.

I mean, it depends who you could get, of course. You'd have to get a real player.

167 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:04 pm

I wonder if these ABs look at pathetic on TV as they do on gameday.

It seems like the scouting report is to swing early and often.

168 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 3:06 pm

[167] pretty pathetic, but jeter did hit that last line drive pretty hard.

169 cult of basebaal   ~  May 12, 2010 3:07 pm

It's "Oh,NO"gan.

Lovely.

Can somebody please take Coffee Joe's toys away?

170 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:07 pm

Is Joe waving the white flag, or does he really think Logan is a good idea here?

171 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:07 pm

John McDonald takes Wakey deep, 3-0 Jays.

172 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:08 pm

[171] Those Red Sox score might become important again.

173 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:08 pm

No, sorry, it was Bautista who homered.

174 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 3:09 pm

This'll be our first shut out, no?

175 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:10 pm

[174] No, because we're going to score.

176 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:10 pm

Uh, no, it was Snider who homered.
Wow, Gameday was all fugged up on that one.

177 Diane Firstman   ~  May 12, 2010 3:11 pm

OK .... rally caps on! :-)

178 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:12 pm

[169] [170] Cult and William, Boone Logan has a little message for you. But I'm too polite to pass it along.

179 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:13 pm

[178] Sorry, Boone...but let's see you do it again.

180 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 3:13 pm

A good outing from Javy, & a good inning from Logan, you can't waste such good pitching guys.

181 Diane Firstman   ~  May 12, 2010 3:13 pm

Music coming out of commercial on Tigers radio broadcast this 1/2 inning:

Spirit of Radio

I believe that to be a good sign.

182 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 3:14 pm

Michael Kay whining about Valverde all fucking game has been like a constant toothache.

183 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:14 pm

More hacking....guess they cant wait to get to the in between game buffet.

184 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 3:15 pm

[180] Not to be a grammar nazi, but in this case, I must insist on proper use of the comma: "You can't waste such good pitching, guys."

Changes the whole sense of the thing.

Remember the panda and all, who eats shoots and leaves rather than eats, shoots, and leaves.

:)

185 ny2ca2dc   ~  May 12, 2010 3:15 pm

I hate wasting this pitching. From Javy and Logan! yeesh!

186 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:16 pm

Cano hacks at the 1-0....is anyone minding the store?

This hasn't been a good effort...almost seems like the team was a bystander to Vazquez' outing. Pretty pathetic.

187 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:17 pm

Now Posada swings 1-0, despite trailing by 2 against a guy who throws splitters out of the zone.

188 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 3:18 pm

[184] Usually I am better. I blame the offense for being so offensively bad that it has crept into postings.

189 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 3:19 pm

Keep hope ALIVE!

190 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 3:19 pm

[188] :)

191 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:19 pm

Okay, there's the runner.
Now Swish...

If we get to Pena, will Joe pinch hit?

192 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 3:19 pm

[187] Its also no fun when they all go up there and decide that they are going to take the first two pitches regardless of what they are.

193 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:20 pm

Through seven the Red Sox have two hits, both by Papi.

194 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:20 pm

[192] It's not about fun...it's about trying to induce a walk from a guy who gives them out.

195 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:21 pm

Now Swisher should be swinging because after him there are no hits.

196 RIYank   ~  May 12, 2010 3:22 pm

Dude can pitch, no doubt about it.

197 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 12, 2010 3:22 pm

He really does look like an assclown with that gyration.

198 rbj   ~  May 12, 2010 3:22 pm

And that's the ball game.

199 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 3:22 pm

Hopefully they show up for the regularly scheduled game.

200 51cq24   ~  May 12, 2010 3:22 pm

goddamn it. he should be looking splitter there, it was obvious.

The ultimate answer to the question Alex's header asked?

Both.

202 Mattpat11   ~  May 12, 2010 3:28 pm

[194] The Yankees strategy against Curt Schilling and David Wells for years and years and years was to go up there and take pitches. Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to what they do at the plate, and when they go up there and decide that they are going to take pitches, they swing at absolutely nothing and get themselves in a hole.

Just the games the Yankees play.

[220] Good, 'cause it's either fuck or walk, pal!

222 williamnyy23   ~  May 12, 2010 4:40 pm

[211] With a right going, the Yankees can't afford to lose Posada's bat. The better call would have been to use Jorge as the DH and have Jeter play both games at SS.

Adding Thames to the outfield makes no sense either. Bonderman is right handed, so you gain nothing. The Yankees current roster alignment make little sense. Cashman needs to get on the phone and figure something out because the schedule doesn't get easier.

It's kind of appropriate that all of the injuries have come to a head in Detroit because it highlights the folly of letting Damon go.
