I like this Dustin guy we have pitching tonight. Hopefully he pitches as well as his aw shucks personality appeals.

2 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 29, 2010 6:38 pm

Kim just said on YES that Swisher has the highest BA of any switch hitter in the AL at 300. Dat true?

3 chrismarz   ~  Jul 29, 2010 6:40 pm

Chad over at Lohud ran into him at the R&R Hall of Fame today. I like him already!

That, and watching him blow away a few Mets back in June while at the stadium made him a fave.

Jack Curry is back! How can a baseball analyst take a vacation in the summer? Anyway I'm glad to see him because Bob Lorenz is as dry as a popsicle stick across the tongue without him.

That tower of theirs is a rip-off of the Municipal Building.
Just saying.

6 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:13 pm

That Curtis has a pretty good arm.

7 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:15 pm

This game is starting out sub-optimally.

8 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:18 pm

[7] And grows sub-optimallier.

9 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:20 pm

Yes, that was hardly efficient.

10 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:21 pm

That was a strike

11 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:21 pm

Can we score 10 runs tonight?

12 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:22 pm

I might just turn this off before The Headache has time to insinuate itself...

13 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:23 pm

I fear the most subbest-optimallest outcome.

14 RagingTartabull   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:23 pm

does anyone get the feeling that the Yankees lose this game 7-1, the 1 being an A-Rod solo shot in the 8th inning?

15 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:24 pm

I was gonna say that the umps sound like they're putting the squeeze on, but I can't see on the radio...

16 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:25 pm

Goddamn, he almost botched that play.

17 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:26 pm

I know they can't all be stars. But how is that this team has Gaudin and Mitre and Moseley at the same time? Do we really need more than one of them? No one at AAA can do a better job?

18 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:28 pm

Miraculous.

19 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:28 pm

Anyone know off-hand how many homers Alex has lifetime?

20 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:29 pm

That could have been less optimal. Unfortunately, he's on pace to complete about three innings, but at least the damage has been minimalized for now.

21 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:29 pm

I'll take it. Moseley kept his cool. He got the ground ball to Arod when he needed it, but I guess the dp was not doable.

22 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:31 pm

How is that a change and not a curve?

23 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:33 pm

frankie - swinging on the first pitch? After 3 BBs? Somebody show Mr. Cervelli to the door.

27 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:46 pm

Gazoo Brains probably should not have swung at the 1st pitch after the bases had been walked full. : (

28 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:53 pm

Watch your lips.

29 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:54 pm

30 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 29, 2010 7:57 pm

Anyone think Little CC is a MLB 4th OFer? He does have a sweet swing and a bit of pop.

31 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:02 pm

Normally I would cringe at the bunt in this situation, but Grandy now facing a LHP...

32 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:03 pm

Good bunt. Come on, Teix.

33 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:05 pm

And it comes down to A-rod again.

35 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:06 pm

This has to be a tailor=made situation for #600, right?

36 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:06 pm

[30] He certainly is not embarrassing himself. I agree he's got a sweet swing.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:07 pm

Well, assuming Perez can throw a strike ...

40 Eddie Lee Whitson KO   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:18 pm

and moseley settles into a groove....would be great to get the pen some rest, we're gonna need their best in tampa

41 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:18 pm

I leave the room for a few minutes, with the bases loaded and ARod up, I come back and Cleveland is batting and the Yanks scored only one run. Dare I say...sup-optimal?

But, it looks like Moseley has settled down nicely.

42 Eddie Lee Whitson KO   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:24 pm

[42] Gritty™ ?

45 Eddie Lee Whitson KO   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:26 pm

[44] better see if David Eckstein has the TM on that. Cervelli, unproductive out.

#gazoofail

46 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:26 pm

Cervelli may need to learn the bunt play.

47 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:27 pm

[45] You're right. I thought that Eckstein was Scrappy™, but then I remembered that trademark belongs to Pedroia.

48 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:28 pm

I don't know what the hell Joey Joe Joe's excuse for not bunting Brains there, maybe it was because the rookie was on deck. Bollocks.

49 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:29 pm

[43] Gritner leads the 2010 team in NPoHBATY, Nice Pieces of Hitting by a TRUE YANKEE(TM).

This ARod fellow would hit more home runs if he weren't so selfishly obsessed with his RBI. Good fer nuthin' sac fly hitting piece of shit. BOOOO!

50 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:31 pm

Grrrr....

The Yankees again seem to be playing with half a lineup, and I think to the quote I read on mlbtraderumors.com, that they don't want to trade for a bat because that would be a luxury.

Oh well. Maybe next inning.

51 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:35 pm

[49] That's the thing with A-rod. For most players, a sac fly is much less selfish than a HR. But A-Rod knows that the fans, teammates, media...America...is waiting for #600. He just wants the attention. Selfish.

52 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:37 pm

[51] yeah, and it's not like he tied the game or anything. Unclutch bastid.

53 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:38 pm

Good job, Mr.Moseley. You might just finish five innings yet!

54 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:39 pm

Once A-Rod found out how much attention his specially marked balls were receiving he decided to draw this thing out as long as possible.

55 Just Fair   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:43 pm

That's a mighty fine double. Atta boy, Curtis!

56 Sliced Bread   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:43 pm

[54] not a gamer, fails to grind, goes about his business the wrong way, doesn't play the game right.

I must be missing a cliche.

Granderson's SLG% continues to twitch!

57 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:43 pm

grrr....three hard hit balls, three outs, no runs.....

68 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:55 pm

It's rare to see a 1-1 game that has been a battle of the bullpens since the second inning.

69 JeremyM   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:56 pm

The way to stop the Yanks from scoring is to let them put two or three guys on with no outs each inning.

70 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:58 pm

[69] Diabolically clever!

71 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 8:59 pm

Gritty, gutsy walk.

Now RUN! (Though Santana looks like he has a gun behind the plate.)

74 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 29, 2010 9:04 pm

Will the "speedy Brett Gardner" steal a base?

75 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 9:05 pm

I bet Girardi PH for Curtis, pulls a double switch and moves Swisher into the field.

88 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 9:26 pm

I'm a bit surprised Girardi doesn't go with Logan against the lefty right now. In any case, at 75+ pitches, Moseley got to be about done.

Wow...I've never seen the runner hit by a batted ball in MLB before! That crafty Moseley!!

89 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 9:30 pm

VIERA, Fla. -- Former major leaguer Orlando Hernandez has made his minor league debut for the Washington Nationals' team in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

The 44-year-old Hernandez gave up one run and two hits in one inning for the GCL Nationals in their 3-2 victory over the Florida Marlins' affiliate Thursday. Hernandez pitched the sixth inning.

That may be the funniest story I've heard Flaherty tell.

Oh Jesus Christ, just throw the damn ball over the plate.

159 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:00 pm

The Thames 3B experiment is amusing...for now.

160 Raf   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:02 pm

[159] I'm just getting in. Why is Thames playing 3b?

161 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:02 pm

I can't believe the Yankees will have to bring another pitcher to get this last out.

162 Raf   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:03 pm

For the record, I did find Thames' play very amusing. But I'm starting to get annoyed with Park.

163 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:04 pm

[160] The Yankees scored a million runs in the 7th and 8th, so Girardi emptied the bench; that included pulling ARod after letting him take one last set of hacks in the 9th.

Now I am not entirely clear how that gives ARod any meaningful rest...maybe they are really looking at whether Thames can play an emergency IF position. Right now, the jury says no.

[162] I imagine in the old days, like the 80s, when teams carried only 10 or 11 pitchers, there would have been one more spare IF to throw out there for the 9th.

165 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:08 pm

Well, that was fun. Now lets take two in Tampa.

[163] He actually fielded the ball fairly well. He just threw it like a left fielder. If you think you can work that out, it might not be so bad.

Goodbye, Cleveland.

168 Raf   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:13 pm

[163] I would hope not, twas Thames' first game @ 3b :D

I did see the runs score, I showed up @ a local watering hole as Grandy came to bat with bases loaded.

[164] I guess with a 12 man staff there's no need to throw a spare IF out there for mopup? Did CLE put a position player on the mound?

[165] Winning tomorrow is key.

170 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:18 pm

[168] Yes, they did...Andy Marte pitched the ninth. With regard to your point about the 12 man staff and position players pitching, I wonder if it really does happen less frequently? Since the tendency is to use more pitchers for fewer innings, my guess is that the occasional Swisher episode happens about as frequently as it used to.

171 monkeypants   ~  Jul 29, 2010 11:19 pm

[166] He looked pretty bad a couple batters earlier, on the ball that found its way through the hole on the left side.

However, I am all for roster flexibility. If Thames can be used at 3B, his stock goes up, for sure.

I see absolutely no reason to believe he can play 3B. As a converted infielder who moved to the outfield, I can attest that unless you're one of those "play all eight positions" freaks, you develop an outfield arm - one that is very hard to recalibrate to the infield.
