"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Meat n Potatoes

A few weeks back, I was hanging out with my six-year-old nephew over at his house. He was sitting on the floor, working on a puzzle when his mother started singing “Empire State of Mind.” At first, he sang along, and then, by the middle of the son, he stopped and looked irritated. “I KNOW that song already!” he said. You know you’ve reached a certain stage in life when you get annoyed by a song because you’ve heard it too much.

Well, I’ve had no need to hear “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas again, ever, in my life, until our own Hank Waddles dubbed Dustin Moseley, “Dustin, the win” Moseley.

That’s Alonzo, who?

Ol’ Mosie’s on the hill in KC tonight.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

such irony - i'm listening to kansas RIGHT NOW!!! been on a kick these last coupla weeks. i had to teach a student "carry on my wayward son" and realized how great a tune it really is, beyond just knowing it so well, on the surface only, as an old hit song.

i've basically been spinning all their 70's cd's, including the live record. they were an excellent 70's prog rock band! that said, i can skip 'dust in the wind', too. hank's title was great. i believe i already mentioned kansas in the comments before that game, though not in a clever way! RI and i had a few posts on it and diane mentioned "point of know return", as well. great record!

someone here also mentioned (vicente) padilla, which reminded me of the 1st part of Magnum Opus (from Leftoverture): Father Padilla Meets The Perfect Gnat

i'm glad cliff's tweets are still here. and i see the schedule is back (though off-centered) and i dig the "brain" bannister! : )

GO YANKS!

per Mark Feinsand:
Pettitte threw 50 pitches in his simulated game, but said he could only push off at 75%. Girardi: "It didn't go as well as we wanted."

Moseley may be with us for a while ...

[0][1] Oh man, 70s arena/prog rock has not aged well at all...I can't listen to Kansas, Boston, Styx or Journey without cringing now...though I will always have a soft-spot for Emerson,Lake & Palmer's live album, where they each took 25-minute solos (Thank you, Mary Jane! , Greg Lake played barefoot on a shag rug on stage, and they each had their own 16-wheeler tour truck for equipment...ahh, the 70s...

4 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:05 pm

Hey, no Swisher.
Heat exhaustion yesterday, I guess he's getting a little recovery time.
Good lineup, anyway.

5 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:11 pm

Cool start.
Go go Granderson...

6 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:15 pm

Pull your weight, Centaur.

7 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:16 pm

seats right behind home plate in KC ... $240 per game

8 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:33 pm

[7] Outfield assist: priceless.

9 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:37 pm

C'mon Bluto!

10 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:43 pm

Late to the party, listening on the radiophone tonight. Seems like LIAB had a rocky first inning.

11 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:44 pm

[10] He's having trouble throwing strikes.

12 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:45 pm

Ah .... the lovely Kim Jones ...

13 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:47 pm

Beckett is following in Papelbon's footsteps.

14 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:50 pm

Wow, and Big Game James is getting shelled, too.

15 MDF   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:52 pm

[2] "Moseley may be with us for a while …"

Probably not tonight...

16 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:52 pm

Yeah, good night to stretch out Kerry Wood a little.

17 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:53 pm

18 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:54 pm

[16] How long have you been saving that one up? ; )

19 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 8:55 pm

Shields is gone. 5+ innings, four runs, leaves two runners for Cormier.

20 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:00 pm

Hello,
Let it rain, rain, rain.
Let's play two tomorrow.

21 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:02 pm

Tonight Moseley needs to be put out of his misery.

And might be a stolen base record if this game continues.

22 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:03 pm

Good ol' Wilson Betemit.

23 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:08 pm

[21] Or better, put out of our misery.

24 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:09 pm

Tommy Henson is now throwing gophers galore. Ortiz, Beltre, Drew, consecutive homers.

25 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:10 pm

Sorry, Tommy Hunter, Rangers pitcher. (Who is Tommy Henson? Anybody?)

26 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:10 pm

New Swing!

27 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:14 pm

This is how it's supposed to go. No selfish, rally-killing home runs like the idiot Red Sox.

28 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:15 pm

[27] That Kevin Long is really invaluable to this franchise.

29 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:16 pm

Wheels Posada.

30 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:16 pm

BLUTARSKI!!!

31 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:17 pm

[23] Now now MP, Moseley has been ok as a replacement number 5. I kind of like him. And the Yankees need inning eaters.

Lance makes it all new.

32 Raf   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:18 pm

OIIIIIIIIIIIII, as my Brazilian friends would say.

Thought RA Dickey would have a no-no, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

Midnight Run, I like that movie. Didn't realize it's like 3 hours long.

33 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:19 pm

[31] I like him too, but this game has been brutal to listen to so far.

And for the record, that's Lance Berkman, Professional Hitterâ„¢.

34 Raf   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:19 pm

And I get in just in time to see Puma line a game tying 2b down the 1b line

35 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:20 pm

Hm.
Maybe one home run would have been helpful.

36 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:21 pm

Strike three Austin. The Yankes already got a blown call break from the 1st base ump that inning.

37 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:22 pm

Beckett is getting some fierce run support. I guess he'll survive his early shakiness.

38 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:24 pm

[31] Also, as much as I have taken a shine to LIAB, let's not dub him an innings eater just yet. For his career he has averaged almost exactly 5 INN per start. We'll see if his (relative) success (for a number five starter...who is actually replacing the #2) the last few starts can last.

39 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:27 pm

Hey, I can watch Little League again! Florida vs. Georgia.

40 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:30 pm

Carl Pavano has 14 wins .... this SEASON!

41 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:34 pm

[38] We'll see. This delay looks like about an hour as best as I can read the radar. Moseley will probably not return.

Boston now leads 8-2 bottom of the fourth. Becket does not look sharp and the game could be a run-fest. After what happened last night to the BSox, if Texas can come back tonight the Sox will be zombies.

42 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:35 pm

Rangers now get a HR from Mitch Moreland (his first career). Now 8-2.

43 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:35 pm

[42] If 2=4.

44 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:36 pm

I can't see the Rangers winning, but at least Beckett continues to struggle.

45 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:38 pm

Ooops. [43] My mistake, it is 8-4.

46 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:40 pm

[45] Are you watching it? What happened to Ellsbury? (I was watching but it wasn't fun to watch.)

47 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:41 pm

[43] If.

Dude, you make no sense sometmes.

48 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:43 pm

[47] If sometmes = sometimes, and if "/i" is inserted somewhere in there.

49 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:43 pm

[46] Dunno what happened to ribsy.

50 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:45 pm

[47] I now try to "if" at least once per thread. I call it, "Kipling". I think to myself, "I haven't kipled yet this evening," this type thing.

51 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:46 pm

Anyone watching the Birds (5) / TB (0) game? TB with bright WHITE unis with avantegarde lettering and a T on their caps. Kinda nice. Meanwhile, the Birds unis have BRIGHT ORANGE shirts and pants with black socks. Hard to look at. Historically ugly.

52 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:46 pm

[48] You were missing two is, then! You were blind as Jim Joyce.

53 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:49 pm

Young goes Boom. 8-5. TB game in the 9th. TB kinda choking lately. Six could make the PS.

54 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:49 pm

Oops.... I MP'ed. SOX could make the PS.

55 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:51 pm

And Hamilton homers! Beckett melting down.

56 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:51 pm

Josh H. with a BIG BOOM. 8-6.

57 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:52 pm

Now 8-6 in Texas, Hamilton goes back to back with Young.

58 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:55 pm

Yanks back on. Moseley is back

59 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:55 pm

Oh, hey, the Yankees are playing again.

60 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 9:57 pm

Wow, Moseley seems fine.
And the O's finish off the Rays.
And David Murphy triples off Beckett (with two outs).

61 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:00 pm

Go go Gardner! Now he doesn't have to steal second.

62 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:01 pm

Oh, goody, a play.

63 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:03 pm

Unacceptable.

64 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:03 pm

Why can't major league players bunt anymore? Mickey Mantle got 10 bunts hits every year in his prime, and it kept the defense honest. Is it beneath their dignity today? If Gardner could bunt, he would have prolly 20 extra hits per year.

65 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:06 pm

[64] Don't know, but as long as I have followed baseball, people have complained that players can't bunt anymore. My guess is that bunting has always been somewhat difficult and few players actually mastered it. That said, it seems pretty certain that players were called on to bunt more in the old days. Whether they were successful more often, I have no idea.

66 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:11 pm

The Rangers IBB V-Mart with a man on second and nobody out. Stupid. But Ortiz lines one right to second and the move works out.

I think stupid moves still work out most of the time.

67 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:15 pm

btw, that play last inning by Tex was something. The cliche' "he makes it look easy" applies. From what I've seen this year, he is the best at 1B.

68 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:15 pm

That was a putrid half inning.

69 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:17 pm

The report on the Ellsbury departure is "left side pain". Same side as his rib thing. Remy sounds pretty sure it's the same injury acting up again.

70 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:18 pm

[68] Last year, that liner by Arod would have gone out, the way he squared up on it.

71 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:20 pm

As usual, when catching up with the comments I suspected this game was an epic fail for us. Interesting how a 3-3 tie can hurt so many people if they followed from the beginning >;)

72 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:21 pm

ARod's loss of power is disturbing. Very disturbing.

73 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:22 pm

Uh-oh, tarp time, times 2x.

74 RIYank   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:22 pm

[70] LOOK AT YOUR CALENDAR.

No, that's not quite right is it?

75 monkeypants   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:23 pm

That's probably it for Moseley, and maybe the game. Will they bother to come back, or call it an official game?

76 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:24 pm

Oh, I see it's 4-3 them. That does kinda leave a bad taste in your mouth, considering it's KC and all; like... like... ?

77 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:27 pm

[75] Not official until after the last out of the fifth?

78 JeremyM   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:29 pm

I think that since the visiting team was able to bat in the 5th and the Royals have the lead, they would get the win, but I might be wrong...

79 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:43 pm

[78] KC Wins if they call it. No bottom of the 5th necessary.

80 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:47 pm

[79] But the HR came in the bottom of the fifth and it wasn't completed. Does that matter? I'm not sure...

81 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:48 pm

Now 9-7 in Texas.

82 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:53 pm

Now 9-8 in Texas. Nancy misplayed a liner by Molina.

83 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 13, 2010 10:53 pm

9-8 Boston .... JD Drew flys by line drive hit towards him ...

84 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 13, 2010 11:00 pm

Here it is..., official MLB rulebook stuff...

4.10 (c) If a game is called, it is a regulation game:
(1) If five innings have been completed;
(2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
(3) If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of the fifth inning to tie the score.

KC wins...

85 Diane Firstman   ~  Aug 13, 2010 11:01 pm

As I am tasked with recapping this game ... I'd like to see SOME resolution to this prior to say, 1AM.

GO RANGERS!!!

95 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 13, 2010 11:54 pm

Meanwhile Deroit continues to suck, although Fat Miggy C. has surprised me and turned it around. He leads MLB in OPS with the following line: .338 .427 .625. He may be the best hitter in Baseball.

Although J. Hammy is right behind at .362 .409 .633 (or maybe slightly ahead after this game?)

96 thelarmis   ~  Aug 13, 2010 11:56 pm

i thought elvis was supposed to lead off w/ a triple...

97 thelarmis   ~  Aug 13, 2010 11:57 pm

What happened the Yankees offense?

138 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:41 am

if gamecast is to be trusted, soria pounded jeter down and in. jete's ended up singling to left.

grandyman up. let's see some results, baby!

139 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:41 am

Damn, I thought Granderson got that one.

140 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:42 am

Great AB by Granderson, but no cigar. Yankees running out of time.

141 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:42 am

unproductive out.

let's go Tex!

142 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:42 am

The Royals have given the Yankees so many chances in this game. At some point, they have to cash in, right?

143 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:44 am

No contest for Tex...major letdown there. He is the only Yankee who has been hitting lately.

144 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:44 am

not a good ab by tex.

always comes down to a-rod...

145 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:45 am

Would have loved to see Jeter try to steal 2B ahead of that hit.

Let's go Robbie.

146 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:45 am

christ, a-rod's obp is .331. that's like below average. yuck.

147 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:46 am

nice, a-rod.

[145] me too. me too...

c'mon robbie!

148 thelarmis   ~  Aug 14, 2010 1:47 am

fuck.

if only grandy or tex moved jeter over. or he stole...

sucks, but at least we didn't lose any ground in the division...

Cano has been struggling lately. The offense has really been weak in August. Four losses now when giving up 4 or fewer runs. With Rays and Sox losing, kind of awful to get shut down by a team as bad as the Royals. If the Rays and Sox didn't have problems of their own, I'd be very worried about this team, especially with the bad news on Pettitte.
