The game is not on TeeVee up here, so the Yanks have a chance to win! Let's go, boys!

2 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 29, 2010 1:33 pm

Man, I hope Nova gives them six good innings, 2 runs or less.

3 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 29, 2010 1:45 pm

went with the fresh Nova at Pick-A-Bagel this morning, simply delightful

and Hawk Harrelson is the worst EVER

4 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:13 pm

Interesting strike zone.

5 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:26 pm

Delicious Nova so far!

6 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:27 pm

That's a helluva start by Nova. Good location with the fastball and a couple of nasty hooks.

7 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:30 pm

You just can't stop Thamey.

8 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:30 pm

I love Thames

9 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:31 pm

That's MR. Thames to y'all.

10 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:35 pm

Wow.
That was very, very impressive.

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:35 pm

WOW.

Now THAT was a GORGEOUS double play.

12 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:36 pm

Wowzers. Great dp.

13 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:42 pm

Eat shit, AJ.

14 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:46 pm

Smoked (by) Nova.

15 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:49 pm

Why do I have the urge to smash my computer screen.

16 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:51 pm

A Cervelli hit! I though those were extinct.

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:52 pm

Goddammit Gardner, WTF were you thinking there???

18 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:52 pm

Better than a bunt!
Small ball, baby.

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:52 pm

Ah, I see ... waste a bunt attempt so you can get a hit down 0-2!

Sneaky!

20 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:53 pm

steal
Steal
STEAL

dammit, don't wait for the GIDP!

21 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:54 pm

[19] He was drawing Konerko in, so Beckham would have to slide over a step, and...
Nah.

22 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 2:55 pm

Well, at least that's a *different* kind of DP for the Cap'n ...

23 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:16 pm

Goddam it. DPs are not our friend today.

24 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:26 pm

i've never had Nova before. looks like i was missing out...!

25 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:29 pm

[24] Nova with four bagels... so far!

Hey, lookit that. Was Brett paying attention?

26 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:29 pm

Brains with the bunt single. Nice.

27 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:30 pm

[25] now, bagels i love! won't have a good NY one til Turkey Day time...

28 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:30 pm

Seriously, I think Nova is overrated (the fish, not the pitcher). I very much prefer belly lox, which is saltier and less delicate, more taste.

29 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:31 pm

i hope Brett wasn't paying attention to that... : /

30 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:31 pm

Brains doing his fuckwit impression. Anti-nice.

31 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:31 pm

Hm. Maybe not such a good idea.

32 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:31 pm

Not brains.

33 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:33 pm

Show 'im how it's done, Brett!

34 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:35 pm

awful, jeter.

35 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:35 pm

Sigh.

36 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:35 pm

Those 2 swings by Jeter are as bad as you can get. Ugh.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:37 pm

Well, at least every Jeter at bat brings down the price of signing him this off-season ...

38 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:40 pm

Nasty location. Beautiful.

39 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:41 pm

i blame smoltzie for that...

40 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:42 pm

Dang. Good throw, too.

41 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:44 pm

What pitch was that, the RBI? Gameday says it was an 88 mph fastball, which can't be right.

42 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:45 pm

Should have had him, really.

43 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:46 pm

Good job, kid.

44 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:47 pm

In no particular order.
Colter Bean. Chris Britton. Freddy Guzman. Sydney Ponson. Al Reyes.
Shane Spencer. Romulo Sanchez. Ron Villone. Brett Prinz. Erick Almonte. Jesse Orosco. Felix Rodriguez. Ivan Nova.
Yankees who have worn #47 since 2000.

45 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:48 pm

[41] He struck out someone earlier on an 88 mph per pitch. A change up according to Singleton.

46 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:48 pm

[41] Changeup...Nova has a very hard change.

47 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:49 pm

[45] [46] Interesting. So, it doesn't break much for a change, I guess. That's why Pitch f/X gets it wrong.

48 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:51 pm

Watching this game with my scout's eye, Nova has been much more impressive in this outing because he has added a very good breaking ball to the mix. If he really does have a fastball, change and curve like he is showing today, he will be a very useful major league pitcher.

On the negative side, Derek Jeter's bat continues to look incredibly slow. His struggles continue to look more and more like a decline and less like an off season. If Singleton noted that Jeter may need to figure out a way to speed up that bat. Having to bat Jeter leadoff against right handers is weakening this team.

49 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:53 pm

Very good news from Andy.

50 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:53 pm

well, that inning sucked.

chad at lohud erred and said the chisox tied it at deuce. let's hope his palantir is cloudy...

51 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:56 pm

[50] That's weird. And yeah, he thought it was 2-1 earlier. How do you make that mistake?

52 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:56 pm

[47] It seems to break a fair amount on the TV. I think the velocity may be more at issue.

53 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:57 pm

Boone up, not Kerry. Interesting.

54 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:58 pm

[51] Perhaps he is anticipating outcomes so he can post more quickly. In this case, maybe he hit publish by accident.

55 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:59 pm

[54] No, he'd given the White Sox a run the previous inning.

56 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 3:59 pm

that's ivan's first walk...

57 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:00 pm

Oh, Pierzynski, that's why Logan was warming. Joe was thinking about Pierzynski.

58 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:01 pm

88 pitches. he coulda finished this inning. that's twice now GI Joe has taken Ivan out early...

59 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:01 pm

Tight game, but I like Nova so much more than AJ or Javy.

Can we keep him, daddy? Please.

60 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:02 pm

[57] i think he coulda gotten AJ out... oh well, great game for Nova!

5.1, 88 pitches, 7 K, 1 BB, 5 hits, 1 ER

61 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:02 pm

Why?

62 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:02 pm

once again, Chad *still* thinks the game is tied. weird...

63 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:04 pm

dammit.

64 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:04 pm

Nunez' glove is a bigger concern than his bat. That's a killer error.

65 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:05 pm

did Boone just say: "that's bullshit"?!

66 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:05 pm

[64] yeah, and they gave him a hit! hometown call, i suppose...

67 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:05 pm

Coffee Joe and the Wheel of Bullpen Roulette.

Lovely, just lovely ...

68 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:05 pm

I HATE AJ Pierzynski.
Hit my ass. E5, And no, I don't want anyone to hit my ass.

69 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:06 pm

kerry wood pitching in chicago...

70 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:07 pm

Let's go, Kerry. Time to earn that big paycheck.

71 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:07 pm

[62] Just noticed...he has it tied in two posts, so very weird. Maybe he is covering the game on gameday or something that has the score wrong.

72 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:07 pm

Oy.

73 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:07 pm

oh, that's really really great. very good start. assfuk.

74 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:08 pm

[73] Not entirely Wood's fault, you have to admit.

75 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:08 pm

So, Cervelli can't figure out when to run on a steal, can't reach 2B on a SB attempt and tries to block wild pitches with his backhand.

What the hell do the Yankees see in him?

76 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:09 pm

What the hell is he griping about? From the side it looked belt-high.

77 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:09 pm

yes, brains was definitely at fault there, too...

both strikes were strikes.

please get outta this.

78 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:10 pm

This blows.

79 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:11 pm

damn. i needed a replay on that. i guess he really didn't go...

ugh.

80 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:11 pm

Kerry looks very calm.

81 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:11 pm

Bring Logan BACK in, Joe.
Good work, dude.

82 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:11 pm

This is what happens when you lift an effective starter for no apparent reason.

83 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:12 pm

whew!

84 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:13 pm

Nice job.

I like Kerry Wood.

85 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:13 pm

Phew.

6 outs to Mo.

86 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:13 pm

Good recovery by Wood, but the idea of trying to prevent Nova from getting a loss is kind of absurd. How dispiriting would it be if Nova worked so hard only to have his game blown up by bullpen roulette?

87 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:14 pm

[82] No shit. As much as seeing AJ blast one off Nova would have went me howling into the street. Joe's got to leave him in for fuck's sake. The next 3 innings are going to be rough.

88 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:16 pm

Granderson has been hitting in some hard luck lately.

89 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:17 pm

Big ballpark.

90 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:18 pm

chad must be reading the banter! he's back at 2-1.

let's make it, i dunno, like, 7-1. or 9-1. or Eleventy-1.

91 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:18 pm

After watching how bad his pitches looked over the first three innings, I would have never guessed we'd still be seeing Floyd in the seventh. It's been very hard for the Yankee lineup to maintain any level of consistency all month. Just when you think they may have broken out, they go right back to struggling.

92 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:19 pm

Way to clear the Cervelli!

93 The Hawk   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:19 pm

Girardi sure knows how to push those buttons

94 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:19 pm

Last batter for Floyd, gotta be.

95 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:22 pm

He's still awful!

96 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:22 pm

You can't stop Cervelli. Pointless to try.

97 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:22 pm

Try the 'ol double steal, I say. It's a win-win.

98 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:22 pm

Huge, because now we increase the chance of finding the Crappy Bullpen Pitcher of the Day. One extra spin for Oz.

99 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:26 pm

I like Gritner's strategy here.

100 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:26 pm

I don't even know what a strike is any more.

Wake the fuck up, Blue. It's right down the fucking middle.

103 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:33 pm

Umpires must hate Cervelli too.

104 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:39 pm

105 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:39 pm

Joba. Interesting choice.

106 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:39 pm

No pitcher is allowed to finish an inning.
Walking Omar was a gigantic shame.

107 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:40 pm

Honestly, how can you lose a hitter like Vizquel?

Yeah! Time for a Joba blown game. Haven't seen one of those in a while. It may not be easy, but Girardi is going to find the bullet in the chamber.

108 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:43 pm

Good stroke, but Joba survives.

I've never seen Jeter with such bad body language. It's almost like he is first realizing what weve been worried about all season.

113 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:48 pm

Ha.

114 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:48 pm

He's gonna walk Swisher so that WP doesn't matter.

116 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:52 pm

Rare bad AB from Swisher this season. Yankees really need another run.

117 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 4:52 pm

Wow, Tschida is really not good at this. Not consistent, let alone accurate.

142 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:10 pm

146 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:12 pm

154 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:17 pm

[154] Right, so I guess they also have more big-scoring games than most months. So I'm nto exactly sure what your point is. Consistency?

160 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:20 pm

166 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:23 pm

[159] The have 44 runs, or exactly 1/3 of their August total, in four games. Yes...I am talking about consistency. If you really look at it closely, the offense has not been very good this month.

167 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:24 pm

[161] not sure where that came from. left field, i guess. but, i agree! will you put a post of that on your captain's blog?!

good call at 1st.

168 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:25 pm

1st pitch, no. 2nd pitch, no. You are agonizing, Brett. WTF!!!!!!
That big lead is doing you wonders, though.

169 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:26 pm

[166] Well, the offense has been pretty good. It just hasn't been consistent.

170 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:26 pm

safe!

171 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:26 pm

Well done, Gritner.

172 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:26 pm

[167] They are talking about it on YES. It would be an interesting topic for a blog post, so I have to add to that to the list.

173 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:26 pm

Just too good, AJ, sorry.

174 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:27 pm

All for naught.

175 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:27 pm

Argh.
Is that why Kotsay is in the game? Or why is he in now?

176 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:27 pm

Fuckity, fuck, fuck.

177 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:27 pm

oh, damn. really nice play by kotsay. paulie prolly wouldn't have made it.

i hate kotsay. he has the hottest baseball wife of all-time. (imho)

178 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:27 pm

Jeter is now batting under. 270. When you don't hit the ball hard, fielders have a habit of making nice plays.

179 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:28 pm

[175] paulie got pinch run for. i think he walked. lillibridge pinch ran, promptly got thrown out.

180 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:29 pm

[179] Oh, right, thanks.

181 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:30 pm

[169] I don't think you can be pretty good, when you are pretty bad half the time. Consistency is an element of pretty good, IMHO.

182 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:31 pm

i'm so thankful for the opportunity to watch Mo pitch today! : )

183 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:34 pm

Brutal.

184 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:34 pm

always so weird when mariano walks a batter...

185 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:34 pm

Looks like the layoff has sapped Mo of some of his command. Great at bat by Beckham, but I don't get painting the corner with Mo.

186 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:35 pm

[181] Yeah, I guess I'd say it depends on how good you are the other half.

187 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:35 pm

I love Juan Pierre. On other teams, I mean.

188 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:36 pm

[186] Really bad for one half and really good for the other makes you a .500 team. The Yankees record in August is 13-13.

189 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:36 pm

Atta boy, Robbie!

190 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:36 pm

ooh, nice getting the lead runner.

191 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Risky play for Cano. Pierre is likely to take 2B anyway, so I am not sure it was worth it.

192 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

In Mo we trust.

193 Just Fair   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

All rise. Awesome!

194 williamnyy23   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Praise be Mo!

195 RIYank   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Thanks be to Mo.

196 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Literally I cannot believe Frankie caught that pop-up ....literall

197 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

Thanks be to Mo.

198 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:37 pm

[188] Agreed. But, this time you said "really bad" for one half. My only point is: pretty bad for half, and really good for the other half, that's still pretty good.

202 Evil Empire   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:48 pm

we need to go 8-2 over the next 10 games. If we do that, we might have a chance to win the division.

203 thelarmis   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:49 pm

we're 30 games over .500.

that's pretty good. tough division.

204 rbj   ~  Aug 29, 2010 5:50 pm

And congrats on Nova for his first ML win.

Potential headline for game: The Kid Stays In The Picture

Great win - very riveting. Last game before law school starts again - I needed this one!

I defer to those who follow MiL, but from his first pitches, I'm having a hard time seeing much not to like with Nova. I see a 2 or a 3? But people insist backend, and maybe he's getting help from newness and adrenaline right now. Still, that stuff looks pretty darn good.

[188] but don't confuse a slump with being bad which is what you seem to be doing here. Really, all teams are bad for some stretches which is what makes it hard sometimes to figure out who is going to be good and who isn't.
