This game is supposed to be "big", but that's not the vibe I have been getting from this team. For the first time since it was instituted, I get the distinct impression that the Yankees aren't particularly interested in winning the division. I hope that's not a sign of things to come post-George.

No Michael Kay!

Good omen.

I love that painting of CC. Especially considering it was done on an iPhone.

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:12 pm

Bats need hats.

12 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:16 pm

A lot of batting averages are going to be hurting after tonight's game.

13 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:22 pm

Busted hit & run?

14 Emma Span   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:22 pm

It's not that I'm panicking... it's just that I miss watching the Yankees hit well.

(I know, I know, it's David Price).

15 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:23 pm

Did Jorge Posada just try to steal second base?

16 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:24 pm

What just happened?

17 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:35 pm

I'm wondering if there's a team of men wearing white gloves standing by with the Cy Young Award, waiting to deliver it to the last man standing.

18 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:37 pm

Dueling one-hitters, 6th inning and only 18 comments on game thread?? I know I've been scarce recently too, but c'mon people!

19 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:38 pm

wow, these two pitchers are going through these hitters like a warm knife through butter.

20 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:39 pm

Oh, and I meant to say knock on wood, cause the Rays are up....

21 Emma Span   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:40 pm

Seriously, I just took out the trash an missed like two innings.

22 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:43 pm

Hope the people in Tampa wake up hungry tomorrow, cause there are a whole lot of bagels being made right now.

23 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:44 pm

This. Is. The. Inning....

24 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:45 pm

Wow, heater, change...Price is locked in.

25 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:46 pm

that could be the game right there dammit

26 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:47 pm

Soclose.

27 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:47 pm

Well, at least Jeter's having a lot of good swings tonite ...

28 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:47 pm

Now, he'll come back off speed...

29 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:49 pm

That's one of them whatchamacallits.

30 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:51 pm

Let's go now....no DOUBLE PLAY!

31 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:51 pm

C'MON ALEX!!!!!!!!

33 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:51 pm

OK, I'll take that.

34 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:51 pm

Evening. How often do you see your OF batting 7-8-9?
And just WHEN is Price a FA?
After this year, Cashman will break the bank to get an Ace.
Aside from Cliff Lee, who's on the market this winter?

35 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:53 pm

ARod behind that pitch...

36 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:53 pm

Fucking fuckin' fuck.

37 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:54 pm

Cmon Marcus

38 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:54 pm

Man, this kid throws that easy cheese.

39 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:54 pm

I think he went around on that

40 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:55 pm

Nah, guess he didn't, it's just that his head jerked so much. LOL

41 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:55 pm

God. Dammit.

42 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 8:55 pm

47 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:04 pm

Man, these are those games where every pitch feels precious, doesn't it?

48 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:04 pm

Not so fast, Ben....

49 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:05 pm

WHERE IS THAT?

50 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:05 pm

Where was that pitch????

51 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:06 pm

[49] That felt like a backbreaker pitch

52 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:07 pm

OOOOF. That was a good swing by Pena.

53 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:07 pm

Big Tex!

54 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:07 pm

Okay, great job by Pena hitting that hard, and another wunnerful play by Tex.

55 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:07 pm

Pena having a Kong Kingman season..

56 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:10 pm

decent first cut by Jorge...

57 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:11 pm

Okay, Jorge, now don't try to steal...

p.s. Hank AND Emma in the comments section. Banterites unite!

58 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:12 pm

fucking fuck

59 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:12 pm

I guess there's no point in trying to actually put on some kind of play. It's not like Price has been difficult to hit.

60 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:15 pm

Another whatchamacallit!

61 Emma Span   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:16 pm

This one's not so much a pitcher's duel as a pitcher's all-out nuclear war.

62 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:16 pm

Before the game, Girardi said Swisher, who is going for an MRI tomorrow, would be unavailable. Now, in what seems like a panic move, he is pinch hitting. Had Girardi employed some game strategy in this inning, such a move would not be necessary.

63 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:16 pm

Let's go, Swish!

64 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:17 pm

[59] We had Jorge Posada try to steal second. What more could you want?

65 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:18 pm

C'mon Swish

66 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:18 pm

At this point, why not just have Granderson go on first movement?

67 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:20 pm

[66] We don't do plays.

68 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:20 pm

Damn, that's the best swing he'll get. I'd drop the slide piece on him now.

69 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:22 pm

Great at bat so far, probably making this Price's last batter. Small victories, you know.

70 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:23 pm

I'm too young to have seen Earl Weaver.

Joe Girardi makes me think he would have had me ripping my hair out.

71 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:23 pm

Damn.

72 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:24 pm

[64] It was actually a great idea by Posada. Unfortunately, he slowed up going into his slide as he covered his head for some reason. Had he gone into the base without that delay, he would have been safe.

73 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:24 pm

Well hopefully Swish chased Pryce from the game. But this is an argument against pitch counts. David is still dealing.

74 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:25 pm

[66] Actually, you can't really have him go because had he been thrown out, they'd have lost Swisher's bat, assuming he can't play the field.

75 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:25 pm

Now, maybe WE can fucking turn a double play.

76 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:26 pm

God help me if we lose this game because Maddon tried to make something happen.

77 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:29 pm

Okay, an extra order of onions, here CC

78 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:30 pm

This doesn't seem like a good DP situation

79 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:30 pm

[74] Yeah, I thought of that soon after submitting the comment.

80 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:32 pm

Oh no

81 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:33 pm

C'mon, Bear DOWN. One more

82 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:34 pm

[73] Speaking of which, this is a great piece written by Jonah Keri about what Nolan Ryan and the Rangers are doing with their pitchers and their training.

Definitely worth a read.

ONIONS

[77] Them's bloomin' onions.

90 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:37 pm

Man, this will be a long, tough night if the Yanks don't win.

91 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:39 pm

[82] Repeat it tomorrow ack em. Or Recapper, put it in the recap.

Sometimes you gotta manage outside the box.

92 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:40 pm

Yanks need one of the big men to step up.

93 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:42 pm

Cano's swing just doesn't look right over the last couple of weeks.

94 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:43 pm

If Rivera wasn't foolishly used for two innings on Friday, you could have CC get Crawford and then go to Mo for 1 2/3. Now, you're probably stuck with Robertson facing the heart of the order.

95 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:45 pm

Mark, sometimes go against the shift.

96 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:45 pm

Hello, Second place.

97 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:45 pm

Tex' slumps always seem to coincide with managers who employ the shift. This is the third straight series and Tex has really struggled in each.

98 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:46 pm

[97] It probably gets in his head.

99 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:46 pm

c'mon Alex ,put the Yay in A Rod.

106 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:53 pm

[102] I thought the same thing. Like he saw Maddon coming and wanted to run Crawford before Maddon could save him.

107 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:55 pm

Damn.

108 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:57 pm

Berkman has yet to hit a homer as a Yankee.

109 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:58 pm

"well, Kim, I wanted to be able to score on a hit in the gap!"

110 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:59 pm

This is all very nice, but it means nothing if Gardner doesn't steal.

111 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:59 pm

will gardner actually go?

112 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 9:59 pm

Make sure you wait until there's 2 outs AND 2 strikes, Brett.

113 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:01 pm

I'm in shock.

114 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:01 pm

115 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:01 pm

Well, at least he didn't wait until 2 strikes.

Still would have been nice if he'd done that before Po hit the flyball ...

116 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:01 pm

I wonder if anyone named Robert Newton Peck will write a story on The Day No Runs Would Score.

123 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:03 pm

Great speed coupled with Posadian base-running abilities.

124 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:03 pm

Brett's really just Jorge with speed.

125 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:03 pm

[115] Only this team could find a speedster that needs five or six pitches before he can steal.

126 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:04 pm

[122] They make too many wrong mistakes, as Yogi would say.

127 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:05 pm

Pena. Walk off. Book it.

128 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:05 pm

If Chad Gaudin comes into this game, I'm turning it off.

129 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:06 pm

[127] Is Gaudin in the game yet?

130 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:07 pm

Chad Gaudin? Really? Again? To lose for the third time?

132 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:08 pm

Ah, good, more pitching changes.

I was beginning to miss the tedium of the Texas series all ready ...

133 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:09 pm

At this point, I'll take any end to this season if it will get rid of Girardi.

134 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:09 pm

Checking in... Just in time to see Garner try and catch Benoit napping.

Is it me, or has Gaudin getting a lot of work as of late?

135 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:09 pm

CHAD GAUDIN?!?!?!

136 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:10 pm

Does anyone else remember a game against Tampa a few years ago that went into extras and got really boring so Joe Torre just brought in Karstens to lose it?

137 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:11 pm

Man, Chad doesn't inspire confidence does he?

138 Bruce Markusen   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:12 pm

William, you're right, the Yankees don't act as if these games are big ones. Girardi certainly doesn't.

139 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:13 pm

[137] He does for Tampa.

140 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:13 pm

[137] It's just that it seems that Girardi all of a sudden discovered he was there in the pen, and decided that he wanted to make up for lost time and use him frequently.

141 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:14 pm

[140] I guess it could be Mitre.

142 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:15 pm

143 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:15 pm

144 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:16 pm

Chad, it started out so well.

145 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:16 pm

Ugh. Throw strikes.

146 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:17 pm

[144] No it didn't.

147 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:17 pm

[136] I do remember that, Karstens came in and somehow survived an inning- I believe there was a deep fly with the bases loaded? Then he blew it the next inning as I recall without recording an out.

148 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

This is what I'm talking about.

149 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

I can't wait to hear Girardi's pathetic excuses after this one.

150 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

Girardi needs a new notebook.

151 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

You know what would be a radical idea in this situation: Bring in Mo for 1.1 innings.

152 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

No freakin' way he gets out Upton.

153 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:18 pm

slow torture

154 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:19 pm

[147] It actually happened on his third pitch

155 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:19 pm

[141] It used to be Mitre in these situations. I think Girardi wanted to get Gaudin out there for 1/3 of an inning? Doesn't make sense either.

156 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:19 pm

[143] Eh, I can't hold being Chad Gaudin against Chad Gaudin.

He has a place on a team ... mop up man.

The fact that we've seen him 3 of the last 4 games during a playoff race against potential playoff opponents ... I hold all of my venom solely against Joe Girardi.

157 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:20 pm

Expanded rosters and all, and we still can't do better than Gaudin?

158 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:20 pm

[150] They have plenty of them in Chicago...

159 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:20 pm

C'mon!

160 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:22 pm

164 Bruce Markusen   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:24 pm

Where was that first pitch?

165 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:24 pm

Apparently the ump is not down with the strike at the knees. For fuck's sake.

166 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:24 pm

[163] After this week, that makes two of us.

167 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:25 pm

It would be a crime against baseball for a pitchers' duel like this end with a bases loaded walk.

168 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:25 pm

This is the most shameful managing in my 25+ years as a Yankee fan.

169 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:25 pm

Kiling me...

170 Bruce Markusen   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

And the Rays Banter just collectively lost their minds. Good.

173 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

We always knew you could do it, chad!

174 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

Okay, they have to win now.

175 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

Holy cow. He did it. I thought this game was over, but he got out of it.

176 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

Doesn't matter that he got out of it. Having Gaudin pitch that inning with no back up was inexcusable, and would not have been tolerated if the Boss was still around.

177 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:26 pm

Hey HEY hey

178 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:28 pm

[173] (psst... Chad Curtis retired years ago...>;)

179 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:29 pm

If I was Gardner, and Girardi came to me to discuss trying to steal 3B, I would tell him to get back to me when he figures out how to manage.

180 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:29 pm

And now Mitre warming? Are Joba and Robertson hurt?

181 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:30 pm

[176] Of course, the Boss was liable to do something just as stupid.

182 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:30 pm

Mitre? Srsly? I venture into LOL territory only to ease the pain.

183 Just Fair   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:30 pm

Joey Joe Joe just put on the double play sign.

184 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:30 pm

Now he is bunting with Curtis and Jeter on deck. Incredible.

185 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:32 pm

A 2-0 bunt? With Curtis and Jeter on deck? You can't make it up. Girardi's has the baseball IQ of a wad of spit.

186 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:32 pm

Dunno, I would've taken another pitch there, Grandy

187 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:33 pm

[186] That's not Girardi's style...he thinks the 3-0 and 2-0 pitch is ideal for bunting.

188 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:34 pm

[187] Joe has been known to dig his heels in. He knows it can work, damnit!

189 rbj   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:35 pm

Good night.

191 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:35 pm

That's good National League baseball right there.

192 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:35 pm

The Yankees would be better off going 0-21 and missing the playoffs than doing anything that get Girardi an extension.

193 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:36 pm

Well, he's getting the ball out of the infield now, so... (shrugging)

194 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:36 pm

And now. the end is near....

195 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:37 pm

Now Sergio Mitre. I refuse to acknowledge the possibility that Joe Girardi is trying to win this game

196 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:38 pm

Man, I just LOVE games where I get to see *both* Gaudin AND Mitre hit.

THANKS, JOE!!!

197 Bruce Markusen   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:39 pm

It feels like Girardi is auditioning for the last spots on the postseason pitching staff. First, Gaudin, now Mitre, next ???

Girardi is a baseball moron.

204 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:40 pm

It appears Mitre is coming in. I will not watch. Why should I?

I can't believe it, but I am actually saying, "our manager obviously has no interest in winning this game."

How on God's earth Girardi does not understand the investment of capital that exists in this game by virtue of throwing your only dependable starter and getting eight awesome innings out of him is beyond me.

I watched every drop of madness of post-Jeff Weaver insertion Torre, with many moves that could only be explained by a manager being drunk or dead.

These last two innings still - even in light of the above - may stand out as the most insane moves I have ever seen a Yankee manager make.

Girardi, you sick twisted bastard.

I don't care who was at this game. If an intern was the only guy available, he should have been sent into the dugout to fire Girardi the moment Gaudin's name was announced.

I have asked for managerial suggestions in a challenging manner before - now I ask for them as a beseeching question. Who? Who would we have? Plausible candidates only, please.

Our manager has either lost his mind, or this is the equivalent of Manny striking out on three pitches with the bat on his shoulder.

Madness. Utter madness.

205 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:41 pm

This is the first time I've felt the Yankees organization doesn't view winning as a priority.

206 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:41 pm

If George was alive he'd fire Girardi.

207 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:41 pm

Jeff Weaver follies.

208 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:41 pm

[197] That doesn't make sense either; neither guy should be on a playoff roster.

209 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:41 pm

[197] Are Mitre and Gaudin seriously in contention?

I was thinking he was running them out there to rest the other pitchers.

210 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:42 pm

[205] I couldn't even venture a guess as to what Girardi was hoping to accomplish this week.

211 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:42 pm

Glad I missed that. That is the most batshit insane thing I can recall witnessing. What explanation is possible?

212 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:43 pm

I really fear a Mets-style collapse is on the way. Girardi has lost his mind.

213 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:44 pm

This game was a genuine firing offense. It was a thrown game pure and simple. Adding insult to injury, literally, he also used injured players in a game he had no intention of trying to win.

This is how the Mets have been run over the last four years.

214 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:44 pm

[211] Joe wants to be a Cub.

215 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:44 pm

that was by far the most infuriating 3 1/2 hours of the entire season...fuckity fuck

216 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:45 pm

[213] I cannot imagine someone explaining with a straight face how this man tried to win this game.

217 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:46 pm

[214] So do I.

218 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:47 pm

I wasn't upset over the weekend...okay, a little. And losing 1-0 in a great pitchers duel is nothing to be too upset about either. But Girardi really hasn't distinguished himself lately. And so this doesn't feel good at all. And if the Sox win later tonight that'll cap a shitty day.

219 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:50 pm

[205] IN TAMPA. IN MOTHERFUCKING TAMPA.

If George were alive, he'd never be allowed in a Yankee dugout again. Maybe - maybe - he gets a plane ticket home. Or maybe just kick his ass out on the street.

George is not alive, so they should rip the GMS off his jersey and send him the hell out of our universe. That was gross incompetence. It was criminal.

I don't think I'm going to waste another second on this season. Which is good for me. So thanks, Insane Joe #2.

220 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:51 pm

I meant [206], but who cares. It's all the same.

221 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:55 pm

Alex, you are a marvel. How can you be calm after that. I turned it off rather than watch Mitre, but decided to yell anyway, and then realizing mid-yell how angry I was, proceeded to almost have a heart attack.

I really believe what Mattpat said may be the only explanation.

Taking spray paint to the mural of the Boss would have been a tame attempt to get fired.

This is George Costanza dragging the World Championship trophy across the parking lot.

222 Bellota   ~  Sep 13, 2010 10:58 pm

God awful, once again. What is Girardi thinking with Gaudin and Mitre? Why is that truck Posada trying to steal second? What is the point of Gardner trying to steal third with two outs?

Again there was no clutch hitting. The yanks are hoping to back into the playoffs as the wild card in the AL. Sad. Again the emperor shows that he has no clothes.

223 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:00 pm

224 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:02 pm

Joe is *pissed!*

225 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:02 pm

I must continue to analogize as my brain strives to comprehend what just happened.

I think I have it:

Having watched Gaudin somehow, miraculously only leave the bases loaded, Girardi was like a man not satisfied with the first pull in a game of Russian Roulette.

The Gaudin result simply would not do.

Clearly, he had Albaladejo, Javy, and Edwar Ramirez queued up in the other chambers. And then Joba, if the satisfaction of having a bullet lodged in his brain had not been attained.

226 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:02 pm

[223] Evasive, rude and making no sense. Why does Cashman tolerate it?

227 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:03 pm

[221] Either he really wants to be a Cub, or its another one of his "we've got to TRICK the other manager" moves. I'm sure Joe Maddon didn't expect that Girardi would bring in his two worst pitchers with the division on the line, so its a moral victory, really.

228 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:04 pm

[224] Good. Maybe he'll quit.

229 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:04 pm

Can anyone paraphrase the individual sentences for those who can't get the postgame?

Not the overall meaning, as I know that's gobbledegook, but the sentences, as they were delivered. Unless he stopped speaking English, his head rotated in a complete 360, and he started speaking in tongues. Which seems entirely plausible.

230 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:06 pm

[227] Maybe he forgot that it's shock and awe that is an actual maneuver, not simply "shock."

Although I can only imagine the confusion in the Rays' dugout as Girardi brought out the tee for extra innings.

231 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:06 pm

[224] He is, isn't he? Seems that he isn't angry at himself, though.

[226] Perhaps he doesn't see it as a big deal? Maybe there isn't anyone there to take over? Perhaps the defending world championship manager has a bit of a longer leash? I dunno.

232 JeremyM   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:06 pm

At least Joba and Robertson are rested!!! This man is obsessed with resting people to a ridiculous degree. I understand guys need to be rested, but it's seemingly his primary focus.

233 Bellota   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:08 pm

Joe is stonewalling in the YES post game interview. He even got some tough
questions fro Kim "the shill" Jones.

Of course YES didn't keep their cameras in the manager's office for too long. Might be too delicate.

234 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:08 pm

[227] I think we are all overlooking the obvious. Girardi isn't very bright and should be managing a baseball team. I don't think there needs to be any other reason but that.

235 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:08 pm

[230] You know, sometimes its also okay to just manage by the book. Thats why there is a book. It tends to work.

236 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:08 pm

I don't know what big a deal it is if Maddon knows that Chamberlain and Robertson are or aren't available. It's not like managing isn't fluid, or anything. I mean he can look out and see who's out there warming up in the Yankees' pen.

237 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:10 pm

I also don't get why no one asked him about bunting 2-0 with Granderson against a righty, so Curtis and Jeter could make outs...the same mistake he made on Friday night.

238 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:10 pm

YES is taunting us now by showing Maddon.

239 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:11 pm

It was the failure to understand the concept of "investment of finite capital" that made me so desperate to see Torre jettisoned.

Girardi has failed in this regard miserably over the last weeks.

I have an out of the country wedding in early October and then a conference all the way across the US the next weekend. I've been trying to come to grips with the inconvenience that could pose. I'm coming to grips with it.

240 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:12 pm

[229] Basically saying that the guys he would normally go to in that situation were unavailable, and that he discussed Gardy's attempt to steal 3b with him. Didn't go into details.

241 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:13 pm

[236] THAT enrages me. Its like when he started lying about A-Rod's return from the DL last year. Who the fuck cares if the other manager knows who you have?

242 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:13 pm

[240] Why, exactly, were they unavailable?

243 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:14 pm

The 2-0 bunt was also unforgivable. Maddon is no Golden God, either. Managing against Girardi in that game was like Kramer ruling the dojo.

244 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:15 pm

[235] I think he was reading from the book; hence Granderson's bunt attempt, and not going to Mo with a tie game on the road, and not going to his trusted relief aces without a lead...

245 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:16 pm

Girardi said "the guys you would expect" were not available. He wouldn't say what was wrong with them. Just overworked? Resting them up for postseason? Secret injuries?

Girardi has been like this since he was first hired as manager. Remember, he wouldn't even say which pitchers were available? Thought that would give the other manager an advantage.

YES talking heads seemed to think there might be injuries involved, and implied they would be investigating.

246 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:16 pm

[242] He childishly wouldn't say. In fact, he wouldn't even say by name who was unavailable. Of course, "I over used bullpen in TX so had to give away a game in Tampa" IS NOT a valid excuse. It is an admission of mismanagement.

247 Jon DeRosa   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:16 pm

if the other guys aren't available, don't use logan for only 1 batter.

248 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:16 pm

[242] Damned if I know, Girardi didn't explain, part of the stonewalling referenced in post [233]

249 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:17 pm

[240] Thanks for the answer. I imagine those watching are left as unsatisfied as those of us are who can't get the postgame. I'd really like the answer to [242].

If those two are not available, isn't there some other option? Like if you know those two aren't available then you know you can't use an actually viable reliever like Logan for only one batter?

Unacceptable answers from Girardi.

250 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:18 pm

Dang it [247], you beat me to the punch.

251 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:20 pm

[245] The image of Bob Lorenz ON THE CASE, possibly with a magnifying glass, made me crack a smile for the first time in hours.

Brett Gardner is now on my TV making no sense. Holy Christ, its contagious.

252 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:20 pm

Girardi should learn from Gardner and simply admit he screwed up. Then again, doing that every night could get redundant.

253 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:22 pm

Gardner's error is also revolting.

[251] They should make a WB ad out of it.

254 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:22 pm

[251] Gardner admitted he screwed up.

255 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:23 pm

Eiland, OTOH, isn't making any sense...

256 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:23 pm

Now Eiland is advancing the party line with the same smugness. Someone needs to let Girardi and his coaches now that if you lose too many battles, you also lose the war.

257 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:23 pm

Dave Eiland just said that they lost the battle to win the war. They damned well better win that war.

258 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:24 pm

[254] I started posting that when he was rambling and repeating himself and claiming that he saw something but he wouldn't say what.

259 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:25 pm

Kim went to Eiland to pursue the mystery of the unavailable bullpen.

He wasn't that much more forthcoming, but he hinted that the pen was overworked and they were saving it for tomorrow. They figured young Nova would need backup more than veteran workhorse CC.

260 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:29 pm

[259] It has been a death march on the schedule, but really, again, not an acceptable answer. If he's going to claim that you rest A Rod because this series is more important than the Texas series, than you damn well make sure you don't enter this series with no bullpen.

And, of course, the whole concept of going in on a game you have a chance to win, with the understanding that in other games in the series, capital may be worthless because you don't even have a chance to win a game - well, that appears to be lost on Joe.

261 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:29 pm

[259] Here's the only legitimate answer. "We managed the weekend series in Texas so poorly, that were forced to punt a key game against Tampa."

That's basically what happened today. Girardi has bungled so many games this season, but no one on the beat seems willing to put his feet to the fire. Apparently, Cash and Hal are interested in doing that either.

262 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:31 pm

Very disappointed in Jack Curry. The one area SNY has YES beat is on the quality of their analysis. It's obvious that you can't be too critical if you want to work for YES.

263 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:34 pm

[259] So they made this decision prior to the game, and decided that nothing that could happen in this game would change their minds? With the division on the line?

264 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:37 pm

[259] Yeah, but even so, it doesn't make any sense to burn both the long guys in Mitre and Gaudin.

265 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:37 pm

In summary, I think I would just refer everyone to the first post in this thread. The Yankees have shut it down. That might be acceptable for another organization, but it is a disgrace for this one.

266 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:38 pm

I don't think it's a bad strategy. Save the pen for Nova, because CC can be trusted not to implode early. The problem was the offense didn't score a single run in 11 innings.

Kim noted that Joba hasn't pitched for several days. His last outing was the 10th, and he only threw 20 pitches. You gotta wonder if maybe there is some kind of injury involved.

267 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:41 pm

[263] It does sound like that was the case.

Before the game, Kim said the Yankees didn't really care if they won the division or the wild card, and neither did the Rays.

268 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:44 pm

[267] There was an interview with Maddon in which he explicity stated he wanted to hang another division banner. That's exactly the attitude a team should have...it's the one the Yankees used to have.

269 Raf   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:47 pm

[265] If 'the Yankees have shut it down," why have CC throw 8 innings or use Swisher and Gardner?

270 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:47 pm

[266] If he wasn't injured, he should have been out there.

Meanwhile, to echo what William's been saying ... SWB's playoff run ended 2 days ago.

Where are the goddamn callups?

I mean, Miranda and Huffman and Russo aren't great, but they're bodies and *bats* that might just be used by the "Chessmaster" at some point.

Especially with the Swisher AND Gardner injuries.

271 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:49 pm

[268] Yeah, but he also told Kim that he had no idea the Yankees had been swept by the Rangers. He said he was too busy watching the Red Sox to pay attention to the Yankees. That sure doesn't sound like someone who's playing for the division.

272 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:54 pm

[271] That wasn't Maddon...that was GM, and his point was he expected the Yankees would be in the playoffs, so the Red Sox had been the main focus.

273 randym77   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:56 pm

[270] I don't think there's anyone in Scranton who would be much help. I went down there Friday to watch Game 3 of the first round of the playoffs, and even though I go to SWB games fairly regularly, I hardly recognized anyone on the team. Half the team was called up even before the playoffs started.

Kei Igawa started. The guy they supposedly moved to the pen. He's actually one of the best pitchers they have down there, but I doubt many want to see him up here.

And then there are the roster issues. To get Igawa or whoever on the roster, someone has to be DFA'd, or moved to the 60-day DL. Which would make them unavailable for the post-season. You can see why the Yankees don't want to do that with Gardner or Swisher.

274 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 13, 2010 11:58 pm

Also, if Robertson wasn't available, WHY WAS HE WARMING UP ALONGSIDE LOOGAN?

I'd be curious to get a straight answer to that one ...

275 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:01 am

[273] I believe the Yankees have three open slots on the 40-man. Marte, Johnson and Aceves are all on the 60-day DL.

276 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:01 am

[273] Each of the 3 I mentioned are already on the 40.

Each would be helpful in their own way.

Huffman, for example, ought to have been starting tonite instead of Greg FREAKIN' Golson.

277 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:06 am

[274] Good point...he also warmed up with Mariano in the ninth, which is why I referenced him in an earlier post.

If you read the Texas game threads, the general consensus was it made no sense to lift Hughes after only one inning and having Robertson throw 35 pitches on Saturday was a bad move. Not only did each decision contribute to losses in their respective games, but they manifested again tonight.

Girardi has managed so poorly in his three seasons, it's really hard to believe there is talk about resigning him.

278 randym77   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:09 am

[275] They're at 40, not counting the guys on the 60-day DL.

[276] Russo and Miranda were called up as soon as the SWB Yanks were eliminated.

Not sure why Huffman wasn't.

279 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:16 am

[278] I just checked Yankees.com and they are at 39. I think they just waived De La Rosa.

280 randym77   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:22 am

[279] I count 40. Counting Pettitte, but not counting Aceves, Marte or Johnson.

I don't see De La Rosa on the list.

281 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:27 am

[280] You're right...I mistakenly counted Andy. I don't recall Garrison being on there. Maybe he was added when they waived De La Rosa.

Here something for laughs. Before the game, Girardi said this:

"Neither one of us are in yet, so there's still a lot of work to be done," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "The division is important because everyone wants their home fans behind them as long as you can. We had it last year and it worked out very well for us. It's important to us."

282 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 12:27 am

WDLR was waived, but they did it to pick up a LH reliever from San Diego.

His spot is taken.
