I guess they're not trying too hard with this lineup, but whatever. I just like the graphic >;)

2 Dimelo   ~  Sep 19, 2010 11:30 am

I like how the Yanks are really playing these games smart, no reason to panic yet, they are resting players and making this about October -- losing one game is not as important as the ultimate prize.

3 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 11:35 am

[2] Yep.

I know Teixeira's toe is the explanation for his absence. Anything in particular for A-Rod's?

4 Dimelo   ~  Sep 19, 2010 11:37 am

[3] Probably just rest, at least I hope.

5 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 11:51 am

So, it took Brian Cashman coming along with the team and saying something to the press for this all to be smart strategy?

6 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 12:01 pm

[5] Check out the comments at LoHud. To me it looks like nobody's changed their minds: some people were on board with all the rest days, and they're happy; others want the foot down to the floor for all of September, and they're still upset.

7 seamus   ~  Sep 19, 2010 12:25 pm

[2] and who better to rest against than Baltimore?

8 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 12:28 pm

Boston/Toronto starts in an hour, but the Red Sox haven't announced a line-up yet because they're awaiting Beltre's tests results from Mass. General.

What a disastrous season they've had for the health of their players.

9 seamus   ~  Sep 19, 2010 12:30 pm

[5] i missed cashman's statement. I always thought it was smart.

10 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:00 pm

I hereby declare today "Golden God Sunday."

I can't wait...!

11 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:01 pm

I'm so much more excited about Andy today than about "ROGER CLEMENS IS NOW A YANKEE!!!'

I mean, Jesus. This is just so much more meaningful to me.

12 monkeypants   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:15 pm

[2], [3] Hopefully Jeter gets another day or two off soon.

13 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:19 pm

[6] I'm fine with the resting strategy, as long as that's what they intended all along. The decision-making on the field seemed head-scratching at best, and I wonder what the players were thinking before Cashman came along and they seemed to "straighten themselves out."

14 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:21 pm

Will, you are so principled.

15 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:31 pm

[14] Sorry about that, I used to have to see the principal a lot in elementary school... >;)

16 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:41 pm

There are few better ways to start a game than a 9-pitch Gardner walk.

17 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:42 pm

Torre and Donnie will be in the house tomorrow night!

19 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:48 pm

That's my Rob.

20 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:54 pm

Not good. This is not the Andy Pettitte we want and know and love.

21 rbj   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:55 pm

Alright, Andy's back, my back is, ah, back, chores already done and I've got the first apple cider of the year.

22 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 1:59 pm

[21] Nice.
But I'm worried, Andy does not look like he's in control. Let's hope it's just a little rust.

Oh, not nice. But, that kind of thing happens, that doesn't bother me. Much.

23 rbj   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:00 pm

[22] Yeah, let's just hope it's rust. I can accept a rusty game from Andy. The offense should bail him out.

24 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:07 pm

Rays load the bases with one out against their old buddy, but Kazmir strikes out Baldelli and Sean Rodriguez.

25 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:18 pm

He looks okay. His control is definitely a little off.

26 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:19 pm

Meanwhile, Lester vs. Bautista, two outs, bases juiced...

27 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:20 pm

Damn, Bautista grounds out on a first-pitch cutter.

28 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:30 pm

Awwww. Poor Andy!

29 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:32 pm

Beautifully turned.

Wow.

30 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:33 pm

Fucking Robbie!

Did you see that economy?

31 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:33 pm

Love that.

32 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:33 pm

[28] Why?

33 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:33 pm

That he can make such a powerful throw with absolute minimal movement.

This guy's incredible.

34 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:35 pm

[32] Kim was just taking about he was stalking around the clubhouse for all this time all miserable and grumpy because, as he explained, "I don't belong here, I'm not doing my job."

But since last week he's been his old self again, eating snacks, fraternizing...

How I love this man.

35 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:38 pm

[34] Oh, thanks.

I think the strategy of Not Swinging could be extremely effective against Tillman.

36 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:44 pm

There, my strategy is looking very good. If only Swisher had followed it.

37 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:47 pm

Yes. Better than a walk, Curtis. Excellent.
Now let's return to the Not Swinging strategy.

38 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:50 pm

Yes! Good job of Not Swinging (almost ruined it, but Austin came through with the take).

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:51 pm

Right now, AK is DEFINITELY better off not swinging ...

I imagine that goes DOUBLY for Ramiro "The Pitcher's Spot" Pena ...

40 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:53 pm

[39] Definitely.
Fouling a few off is Acceptable.
But that is not.

41 Eirias   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:54 pm

Come on Gardner!

42 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:54 pm

Okay, Brett, do it. Take a few, foul a few, and then hit a triple.

43 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:55 pm

God.... I LOVE Gritners approach!

44 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:55 pm

[42] Isa BB OK?

45 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:56 pm

Beautiful.

46 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:56 pm

[44] Yesitis! It's the perfect implementation of my Not Swinging strategy.

47 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:57 pm

[43] Me too. So old-school. The rare player who actually knows the meaning of the words "shorten up with two strikes."

48 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 2:59 pm

Fug.

49 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:00 pm

Well, two runs on one measly hit, so hard to complain, but it does seem like the Yankees might have done more with the gift base runners.

50 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:07 pm

Bourjos 3-run dinger! 4-1 Angels.

51 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:17 pm

Wow.
Happy Golden God Sunday!

52 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:24 pm

Kearns is now up for Best Supporting Actor...

53 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:29 pm

Uh, that was ball five. WTF? Suddenly the strike zone gets much wider?

54 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:32 pm

[51] :)

55 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:36 pm

Nice change.

56 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:38 pm

0-2...

57 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:39 pm

Bravo, Andy!

Bravo!!!

58 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:39 pm

How 'bout my boy?

Eh?

I'm positively glowing.

59 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:40 pm

Just amazing. Bow down before Andy Pettitte.

60 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:43 pm

[59] He's something else, isn't he?

61 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:49 pm

Yeah, I was wondering. I thought maybe they'd let him get to 85 pitches, get a couple guys out. But this is fine.
Go get 'em, Joba.

62 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:54 pm

Coffee Joe can't be stopped ...

63 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 3:56 pm

[62]
JOBA to E4.
LUKE to E5.
BOONE to C5, check...

64 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:02 pm

Get me a run here, boys, so I can relax.
The Angels are thrashing the Rays.

65 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:08 pm

Nope.
Well, the Wheel of Bullpen Fortune isn't quite so scary these days. Let's see whose number comes up.

66 Eirias   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:10 pm

[62] Coffee Joe?

67 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:14 pm

Uh oh.

Mo, please. D-Rob can finish if necessary.

68 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:17 pm

Crud.

In a playoff game, would Joe have gone to Mo when the first two men reached base?

69 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:19 pm

Good job, Kerry.
And thanks for the out, Buck. Much appreciated.

70 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:20 pm

Oh, jesus.
Well, one stupid move deserves another. Now let's see if Kerry walks in a run.

71 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:21 pm

Why do I question his genius? Joe knows.

72 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:34 pm

73 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:35 pm

74 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:35 pm

Well ... that sucks eggs.

Oh Mo ...

75 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:35 pm

Ohhhhhh.
Where is everybody? I need support now.

76 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:35 pm

Oh, there you are.
Misery likes company.

78 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:36 pm

I feel like I just got punched in the gut.

79 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:36 pm

Well... at least TB in down by 4 in the 8th.

80 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:36 pm

It all began so well, but what an end...

81 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:37 pm

Anyone see where Mo threw that HR pitch? Was it fat?

82 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:39 pm

[81] Low in the zone, but over the plate. Not fat, but hittable. Obviously.

83 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:40 pm

Oh no, Mo. Nothing else to say. First pitch hitting by Cano last inning in hindsight, not so good.

Those sacrifice flies that didn't happen earlier in the game come back to haunt.

The good news, Hastings beat Dobbs Ferry in football (continuation of the game started on Thursday postponed due to the storm).

84 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:42 pm

OK, get it back now boys.

85 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:42 pm

[81] No, it wasn't fat. WAsn't perfect, but by no means fat. It was pretty good hitting.

86 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 4:49 pm

Well, this isn't going to end well. Sure would've been nice to have cashed in some of those runners earlier- this should've been a laugher.

87 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:02 pm

Ye gods, wasn't expecting the game to still be going on.

You know it's a bad day when "2-pitch-at-batterson" gets a hit off Mo.

88 Just Fair   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:06 pm

Ya' see something new every day. : )
Squeeeezzzzzeeeeeeee. Just kidding. kind of.........

89 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:08 pm

I didn't have a good feeling for Thames in that at-bat. Come on Yanks, they've handed this to you.

90 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:10 pm

Uh, boy. Gonna be up to Jete.

91 Just Fair   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:10 pm

[88] With Jeter I up, I am no longer kind of kidding. Get it done.

92 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:11 pm

Bobby Fischer for next manager of the Yankees? This is epic chess being played here.

Come on Jeter!

93 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:11 pm

Walking Jeter, too.

94 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:12 pm

Crap, it worked.

95 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:13 pm

[92} Walking Jeter? This is epic chess! My mind is boggled!

What a great pickup Berkman has been. Worthless in every big spot.

96 Just Fair   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:13 pm

Nice job, Lance.

97 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:13 pm

Goddammit Berkman.

Gonzalez had intentionally walked 2 batters AND started you off with a ball ... how the FUCK do you swing at that pitch?!?!?

98 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:14 pm

How friggin slow is Berkman? That was a slow bouncer to third, and he was out at first in the DP by a step and a half.

That inning was not the Yankee Way.

99 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:14 pm

It is a chess match. They walked Jeter to get to Berkman, because they know he sucks from the right side of the plate.

And they also knew that Girardi didn't have anybody left to pinch-hit. At least, anyone good.

100 Just Fair   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:14 pm

One of my favorte things about baseball is having the winning run on third with no outs and not scoring. In extra innings no less. Fucking Bollocks!

101 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:15 pm

Berkman has a great OBP, but has yet to hit a homer and has come up small in almost every RBI spot. This ain't Houston, cowboy.

102 RIYank   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:17 pm

That was excruciating.
I was sooooo happy when they gave us the two IBB! I was sure it wouldn't work.

What happened to Good Lance Berkman, anyway?

103 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:17 pm

Thanks Thames.

104 Just Fair   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:18 pm

It'll all be over soon. The Yanks really screwed the pooch last inning.
b double o.

105 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:19 pm

Good night nurse.

106 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:19 pm

Well, FUCK A DUCK.

107 randym77   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:19 pm

Luke Scott, Yankee killer.

108 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:20 pm

Wow, I refuse to blame bad luck for all that. That was just pure horseshit.

109 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:21 pm

I hate house money lineups. I understand, but it's so hard for me to watch them lose with a garbage lineup. I really should just not follow these games when I see the lineup.

110 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:22 pm

Luke= Yankee Killer
Lance= Yankee Victim

Why is it impossible for the Yankees to hit fly balls to the outfield with a man on third with less than 2 outs? That skill deficiency is one of the most frustrating things about the team this year.

111 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:24 pm

Pure, unadulterated, steamy horseshit (with a fly on top.)

112 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:25 pm

How does anyone follow baseball and not go insane? How? It's not possible.

Yes, the curses I am screaming are completely inappropriate for apartment building living, but how could you not go insane from shit like this?

If anyone knows the secret, I'm all ears.

That is the most fucking annoying four innings - I don't have it in me to not want to punch through a wall when shit like that goes down.

113 JeremyM   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:26 pm

[110] I don't know, but it's infuriating. I would've probably left Pena in with the hope that he could've kept it on the ground and got Nunez in from third. Then again, Pena failed earlier in the game in a similar spot.

Of course, why is Pena even playing over Nunez in the first place? Nunez has shown an ability to hit at least.

114 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 19, 2010 5:35 pm

Do they honestly get any rest when they lose games like that? Does it really do them any good? You might as well have your bench scrimmaging in the parking lot so they can still be game-worn at the end.

115 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 19, 2010 6:00 pm

Is it too much to ask for the Yankees to be better than a loss column tie with the Rays, before they start a four game series with them...the most pivotal series of the season? Apparently so.

At least Andy P.'s performance instills confidence that he will be ready for the remainder and post season.

Here's to Andy:
