Sky's the Limit

Opening Day. It is cold and rainy in the Bronx but it today is Opening Day and there will be baseball. It’s been a long winter and I’ve waited months to clap my hands and say the following:

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

17 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:12 pm

There it is ladies and gentlemen, your moment of Zen!

18 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:14 pm

fuck. did they not show Moose with the ceremonial pitch?! dammit. i really really really wanted to see that. i hope he got a great crowd reaction. i miss Mikey Moose.

if Moose and Andy were pitching for us this season, everyone would say they're too old and we should give the kids a chance. i think i'd feel better if we had Andy & Moose!

19 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:14 pm

well, that's a smokin' start!

20 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:15 pm

ain't he GRAND!!!

21 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:15 pm

Nice catch, Curtis!
Hey, he's back! That's cool to see!

22 williamnyy23   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:19 pm

Calling it now...first pitch to Jeter will be a line drive single to right field.

23 seamus   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:19 pm

[12] yinz is the correct term! actually i've been really into using both y'all and yinz in the same sentence lately.

24 Just Fair   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:20 pm

Cheers, all. Go Yankes!

25 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:21 pm

I predict a hit for Jeter.

Right here, right now!

26 seamus   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:21 pm

damn.

27 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:21 pm

Dude throws hard.

28 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:22 pm

[23] we use yins everyday to make fun of PA! : ) i have some fellow penn staters down here with me...

29 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:22 pm

[22] Well,. he should have taken that pitch to RF ...

30 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:23 pm

That was a good little defensive swing there by Derek. Bat looked kind of quick.

31 williamnyy23   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:23 pm

[22] Guess not.

32 Diane Firstman   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:23 pm

Jeter is done! (j/k)

33 williamnyy23   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:24 pm

Verlander looks great.

34 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:25 pm

Damn, what a great pitch. That was awfully close.

This Verlander guy's not a bad pitcher.

35 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:25 pm

hey, a baserunner!

and now...a 2-run homer!!!

36 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:28 pm

Damn, tied his ass right up.

37 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:29 pm

Wow!

Let's go, Robbie!

38 williamnyy23   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:29 pm

Verlander is a dominant pitcher, but he still looked afraid of Arod.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:29 pm

C'mon Robbie, let's get RIPPER on these kitties!

40 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:30 pm

nice AB, Alex.

verlander is pitching great. i'm glad we're making him work.

robbie looks so calm, cool and collected. i like the Confident Cano!

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:30 pm

Damn, nasty change from Verlander.

42 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:32 pm

Way to fight that off, Robbie! 96 and up in the zone.

Good job...

43 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:32 pm

Well, at the very least, Verlander won't escape the 1st without throwing 30+ pitches.

44 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:32 pm

Another full count!

45 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:33 pm

30 pitches already!

46 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:33 pm

Oh well.

Still and all, a very fine inning.

47 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:34 pm

ah, man.

at least we made him work, i suppose...

48 YankeeAbby   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:34 pm

Ya ever see Snoopy do his "happy dance"? That's how i'm feeling right now that baseball is back!

49 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:39 pm

GO BASEBALL!!! Happy Opening Day everyone!!!

58 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:56 pm

i dig Heyward and would've loved to have seen his AB...

59 Emma Span   ~  Mar 31, 2011 1:58 pm

[56] You'd think people had never heard of a reverse jinx!

60 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:02 pm

Happy Baseball to you, Emma-Shmemma!

61 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:05 pm

Pfew!

I thought Brett was going to pull up lame there.

62 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:05 pm

a nice hit by the man who has Coltrane as one of his 17 middle names!

63 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:06 pm

Oh man, that could have been very, VERY bad for Gardner.

64 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:06 pm

[61] yeah, me too. i held my breath on Curtis's catches, as well...

65 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:06 pm

Look at Brett all buddy-buddy with Joe!

66 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:09 pm

c'mon, Tex - go...BOOM!

67 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:09 pm

Dear Tex,

it's still March. it's okay to smash the shit outta the ball!!!

68 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:10 pm

The catcher steals THIRD?

69 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:10 pm

Cult - how ya like me now, pal?!

Your Friend,
Nostra-larmis

73 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:11 pm

That was very, VERY good for Teixeira!!!

74 Simone   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:12 pm

Yeah Tex, home run!

Happy Baseball to one and all!

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:12 pm

Good healthy swing by Alex there...off the end of the bat, though?

76 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:13 pm

also nice to see the hot girl working in the expensive seats behind the Yanks' dugout. i didn't see her til this inning...

77 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:14 pm

[72] You still got it buddy!

[76] Hah! I just noticed the same thing this inning. She's all bundled up against the cold.

78 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:20 pm

[77] yeah, but no amount of cold can make her any less HOT!!! ; )

she knows it too, with her long hair over one shoulder!

79 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:36 pm

[77] [78] Heheh. You two are so cute.

80 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:40 pm

oh, boo. this is shaping up to be a really annoying inning.

almost as annoying as listening to Sut... : /

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:40 pm

Hmmm.

No es bueno, Cano.

82 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:43 pm

nice play by the Captain.

83 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:44 pm

knotted at three...

84 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:50 pm

dammit. that was a nice catch. i thought it was gonna fall...

85 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:52 pm

both halves of that frame were highly annoying.

86 Alex Belth   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:53 pm

But at least they ain't behind...big inning her, c'mon boys!

87 Alex Belth   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:53 pm

Uh, so much for that.

88 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:59 pm

Did Brett take a funny route on that?

89 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 2:59 pm

Hmmm.

Misplay in the outfield. Hope that doesn't cost the Yankees.

90 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:01 pm

YES has an overhead camera, right?
So why don't they use it when it might help to elucidate the action? Like, for example, just about anything that goes on in the outfield.

91 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:02 pm

whew. i'm guessing that's it for Brown Bear...

92 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:04 pm

I've griped about this before, but it's really annoying. It makes it nearly impossible to evaluate/appreciate outfielders because (obviously) the talent is all about what you do in that first split second.

It just pisses me off that they use the camera a couple times a game for..for what, I don't know, other than just to say, "Hey, isn't it cool, here's the field from up above!"...but seldom when it would seriously enhance our appreciation of the sport.

93 cult of basebaal   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:07 pm

Dammit Alex, that should have been 3.

Bah.

94 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:08 pm

It should have.

95 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:10 pm

NIce, Robbie.

96 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:14 pm

Oh, BULL FUCKING SHIT!

97 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:14 pm

holy christ, that was waaay the fuck outside.

98 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:22 pm

Has Joba lost weight?

99 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:23 pm

And is that hair regulation?

Remember when Mattingly got in trouble for his tail?

100 thelarmis   ~  Mar 31, 2011 3:27 pm

[99] i'd be sent to the gallows! ; )

123 williamnyy23   ~  Mar 31, 2011 4:15 pm

Granderson was awesome today. By the end of the year, he is going to again be considered among the best CFers in the game.

Amazingly, that was only the third save for Mariano Rivera on Opening Day (2000, 2008 and 2011).

124 Jon DeRosa   ~  Mar 31, 2011 4:30 pm

[67] My vote for "Comment of the Game Thread"

125 rbj   ~  Mar 31, 2011 4:32 pm

Yankees win, Mo gets the save and all's right with the world again.
